William Bonhorst says, "Long overdue review! Here is my story, with helpful tips I learned in the process! Bought a new house and the concrete drive needed to be replaced. My wife and I wanted very specific Calstone Belgian Stone Pavers so the search began for a contractor to demo the old driveway and install new pavers. I heard an ad on the radio from a National Paving company, got a quote, then got three more quotes.I learned that the National Paver companies are basically marketing firms who will try to sell you on their iPad demos, marked up prices with misleading discounts, charge you double and outsource the actual labor to local companies. So dont go with those guys, go directly to the source and that how I found Souza & Sons Inc. and it was the best experience I have had with a contractor thought our 1 year remodel! The owner Thiago and his team were awesome. He was so responsive, great price, written quote/contract, no surprises, the whole crew was very kind, on time and cleaned up, etc.Professional high end equipment like a bobcat, mini backhoe, mondo dump truck for the demo! Thiago and his day to day manager were always checking in on each phase and were always a text away if I had questions.I noticed these guys just wanted to work, came on time each day, and underpromised and over delivered (estimate was for 3 weeks to finish, they got it done in 2 weeks, 3,500 sqft driveway).FYI: Because we wanted very specific pavers and wanted to order them ourselves, Thiago made it happen and I was able to get his contractor discount and I paid him to demo and install the pavers. Thiago coordinated how much we needed and the paver delivery seamlessly. He can do the whole process for you as well but again we wanted to buy the pavers directly.Save yourself time, energy and money and call these guys if you need pavers!"See more

Carol M. says, "Our kitchen remodel experience with Adi and Creekside pro construction was excellent. We were renovating a 50s era kitchen, but not just modernizing the furnishings and appliances. We were also knocking out a pass through wall and moving the sink back to the building wall under a window where there used to be a wet bar. We were also opening up the kitchen entrance which involved knocking out a couple of small walls and . A few observations about Creekside pro construction and Adi’s team in particular: Adi has really good people working for her. The team was clearly a group of regulars who have done numerous jobs with her. A shout out to Alex and Andy in particular, although every member of the team was a pro. Adi has a good eye for design and helped us visualize our project and make the right choices with regards to materials, layout etc. she’s very enthusiastic about what she does and it shows in the quality of the work. They handled the inevitable surprises that come with a job of this size extremely well. Like finding vent pipes inside one of the walls we were moving, or that the ceiling and walls were far from level, and a number of other smaller items. Moving the vent pipes added a change order, but the added price was fair. Communications with Adi and the team was excellent, mostly via WhatsApp or phone when needed. They were flexible when we wanted to add small jobs outside of the kitchen to take advantage of having a team there, (e.g. recessed lighting in our foyer, fixing a hanging closet door issue), not gouging us on price. Though they weren’t the least expensive option, I’m glad we paid that premium - and it wasn’t that large - to get a quality outcome and excellent responsiveness to any questions or concerns we had. In short, I whole-heartedly recommend Creekside pro construction , in fact we’re considering them for an additional project."See more

Leaf T. says, "Fernando and his crew are some of the most reliable, high-quality contractors I've ever hired. I would strongly recommend them to anyone, and here's why: 1. He's responsive and always keeps me in the loop. Unlike other contractors who have been impossible to get in touch with, Fernando always responds promptly. When you hire someone, you want a partner who you can trust to check in and make sure you're on the same page, and Fernando does this amazingly well. He always proactively updates me if anything changes. 2. He brings valuable professional advice. When we hired him to redo our front driveway, walkway, and yard, he took the time to understand what we were trying to do and offered some very helpful suggestions that made our plan even better! Same with the deck out back. He doesn't try to upsell you, he just offers an experienced perspective on what works, what might not, and tells you exactly why. He made me feel very empowered to make good decisions about my property. 3. He's fast. As soon as we agreed on a plan, the team got to work. They worked hard, and delivered a whole new driveway, walkway, front yard, and a deck in a shockingly short amount of time. I definitely got a lot of good, hard work for my money. 4. High quality work. Not only do they work hard, but the quality of their work is excellent. We had them replace our concrete with brick pavers, and the attention to detail is incredible - the bricks are graded, even, sealed, and seamless. It looks gorgeous. The deck is level, solid, and looks extremely high-end. I cannot say enough about the quality of work. When you're hiring someone to work on your home, there is a big difference between "some guy and his team," and a professional crew. This is a professional crew that will talk to you, listen to you, and do the job right. If you want to feel really good about your project, hire this team."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best sealer to use on concrete?

Because unsealed concrete is porous, it readily absorbs liquids, leading to unsightly stains and freeze-and-thaw cycle damage. For this reason, it’s important to seal concrete that will see spills or outdoor weather.

The best option for garage floors and other high-traffic areas is epoxy, which forms a hard and extremely durable surface on top of concrete. Epoxy, acrylic, and polishes are often used on indoor floors, while acrylic-resin sealers and reactive penetrating sealers are used on outdoor surfaces to repel water and salt. Locate a concrete contractor in your area to help find the best solution.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

Is it better to stain or paint concrete?

A concrete paint cover is typically opaque and covers up the color of the concrete. This means it provides significant protection to the concrete below. However, if it is improperly applied or subjected to heavy traffic, a painted concrete floor is likely to chip and peel.

Epoxy and staining are two types of concrete floor sealer. Epoxy is a more durable but often more expensive option than a concrete stain. Epoxy forms a protective layer, while concrete stain is more decorative and requires more maintenance. Because epoxy can be more expensive than concrete stain, it is best used in high-traffic areas or in applications where low maintenance is desired.

A concrete stain, on the other hand, is quick to apply and can show off the textures of the concrete, but it does not provide a high degree of protection for the concrete against spills, salt, water and other contaminants. Staining concrete generally requires a dust mop, a pH-neutral cleaner and water to clean, while epoxy can cause resin buildup that necessitates the use of special detergents.

Find a concrete contractor near you for help selecting the right floor concrete sealer.

What can concrete contractors do?

Concrete contractors can build foundations, structures, driveways, concrete storm drains, raise or level concrete patios and much more. They can handle every step of the process, starting with framing the mold that the concrete is poured into. They then cut, assemble and tie together the rebar, giving the concrete its tensile strength. Finally, they pour the concrete in, mixing and conditioning it to ensure it cures properly. They will also take steps to ensure that no air pockets are trapped within it.

If you have a project that requires the help of a concrete contractor, reach out to one today to get a price estimate.

What is the best finish for concrete floors?

The best finish for concrete floors depends on your personal taste. An acid stain is a bold, varied look with lots of texture and the potential for earthy tones and a natural stone appearance. A water-based stain might not last as long as an acid stain, but it gives you the choice of many different colors. Epoxy is great for high-traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms, basements and garages. It provides a glossy, damage-resistant, non-slip coating on your concrete floors. To find out which finish is the best for your concrete floors, contact a concrete contractor near you.

What do concrete contractors do?

Hire concrete contractor services for projects such as concrete foundations, concrete driveways, slab floors and other concrete work. A concrete contractor builds structures from concrete, often handling every step of the process from mixing ingredients to building the retaining structure to pouring and settling the mix. This individual or team supervises delivery and pouring to ensure that it’s done correctly. Many states require concrete contractors to have a license.

Do concrete contractors offer remote or virtual services?

Concrete contractors must be present to pour concrete. If you come across a profile that states the concrete contractor is offering remote services, message the contractor to see what those services include.

In any case, contact local concrete contractors to ask whether they can perform the job under current guidelines. You can also discuss other strategies to stay safe, like virtual payments and video consultations.

How do you find the best concrete contractor?

To find the best concrete contractors in your area, start by comparing concrete contractor reviews and ratings, which can give you insight into the quality of work you can expect from potential concrete contractors. When reading reviews, pay attention to details about how long the project took and whether the customer had any disputes with the contractors. The reviews often contain photos of past work, but if you don’t see any reviews, ask the contractor to share photographs of concrete floors, driveways and other projects they’ve worked on. Look for details such as clean edges and a lack of cracking. And finally, if a concrete license is required in your state, ask to see the contractor’s credentials.

Is a concrete floor cheaper than wood?

Yes, concrete floors are generally more affordable than hardwood floors. Generally, a concrete floor costs between $2 and $15 per square foot, while hardwood floors cost between $12 and $20 per square foot, according to Floor Critics. While concrete requires preparation and pouring, its ease of finishing makes it a very affordable flooring option. Choose between finishes like acid stains, epoxy and more. While hardwood is not cheap flooring, it offers warmth and durability with infrequent maintenance.
