Derek arrived on time and was polite and focused on the task. He diagnosed the loud rattle / vibration we have in an HVAC vent -- determined the heater is otherwise working fine -- but wasn't able to eliminate the noise. Our vent cover is atypical (will require brute force removal, followed by repair/painting.) He recommended we hire a "handyman" who will have the tools to reach far into the vent to solve the problem. We were not charged for Derek's visit.

I can't agree more with all of the five star reviews below. We bought our house 2 years ago and the air conditioning unit only worked in the upstairs area. When Sam the technician came to the house he found multiple issues. Basically like many other people have stated, duct problem , the people who built the house had cut corners and in some instances didn't even build the house up to code. We had a leak from the AC unit because it did not have an external drain etc. Sam made multiple recommendations, understood our budget and tried his best to work within it. We completed what we could last year and this year when he did the annual service he completed the rest. and clean our furnace. He really is passionate about his work and I feel he is a very honest business man, which we all know is something that can't be said very often now a days. I really feel that if you need HVAC work done in the bay area, and you are looking for someone who is going to do a great job without cutting corners than Healthy duct cleaning should be the place for you.

Carlos and his crew did great job of replacing the old air ducts for my entire house of 3000sf. I wanted to do it asap before next heat wave and Carlos went extra step to meet my request. Job was done on time, in less than day and a half, very professionally, with great quality and very fair price. In the process they noticed few more deficiencies and suggested the most economic ways to correct it. Some they even fixed in the process. I highly recommend Carlos for all HVAC projects and for sure hire him for any future projects. Thank you Carlos for great job! We enjoyed the results of your work the next day when temperature in our area reached almost 110 deg :)!

Denny was a fantastic HVAC contractor. My husband is a general contractor and we recently relocated to SF. Denny installed anentire single family home new HVAC system (we remodeled down to the studs) and was highly professional, hard working, and delivered excellent work on time. We'd highly recommend him for anyone looking for HVAC work and we will definitely use him again on future projects.

I was able to get an next day appointment at the time I needed. Phillip came out and checked my HVAC system from top to bottom, have me great information on how to keep my house cool in the summer while keeping my bills low and what a huge difference, my summer bill is lower than it has ever been. He explained how to keep my older model running efficiently and I know his company will be the one I will go to for service, repairs and when it comes time, a replacement. I feel like he was honest and trustworthy. I have and would recommend him to my friends and family for any and all HVAC work! I wish all companies could be counted on like this one. Sheri J.

IRBIS did a great job for me when my A/C went out. I got one estimate that seemed high to me. I did some searching on the internet and indeed it did seem high. I found a great web site pickhvac.com that helped me understand what I should be looking for and what the prices were. I went to get other estimates and Tim from IRBIS was the first to respond quickly, gave me an estimate on the phone (others wanted to go to the site and take a look first) and was quickly available to go take a look and give a final estimate. His estimate was very reasonable, in line with what I read online, and cheaper than the first guy for the exact same A/C model number. He was also able to do the install relatively quickly (within a few days). Finally, when it was installed it worked fine - but that evening there was a glitch and it stopped working. He came out right away and fixed it - even after he had been paid. So overall I feel like I got good quality work, very good service, and a fair price.

They were on time per appointment schedule and Sean seems to know what he is talking about HVAC system. He explained to me about his diagnosis and gave me some options. Unfortunately, I decided to forgo the project as planned and opted for a different route than his recommendation.

Superb! After looking around and getting multiple estimates we finally found the perfect company for the job. Ricardo, the owner of Bayhill Heat and Air is a very honest guys, he runs a very professional and well rounded company. What he promised is what he delivered. He ensures the work is done to exceed the customer's expectations and especially his own (which is way beyond what I was expecting). The crew came, worked nonstop to deliver the system on time and everything looked unbelievably good. They didn't cut any corners to make it perfect. Thanks Ricardo (and team) , your company is the best HVAC company in town, hands down.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
