After describing my needed garage door repair on Thumbtack, I was contacted the same day by Dan Denker of Denker's Garage Doors. He provided his cell number for direct access. I called and described the issue as well as my desired solution, and he was able to give me an immediate quote and advise me of additional considerations withe regard to the repair. After some comparison shopping and consideration, I decided to hire Dan. He came quickly to my location, inspected my current door and opener, and measured for the new door panels. The next morning, he arrived with the new door panels and spent an hour and a half removing the old panels, replacing the torsion spring, and installing the new panels. Once the new panels were in place, he also noticed that my garage door opener needed to have the carriage replaced due to excess wear and replaced the part on the spot for the cost of the part. He then cleaned up any extraneous marks on the new panels before leaving. Overall, I received excellent service and pricing and would recommend Denker's Garage Doors to anyone in need of service, repair, or installation of a garage door.

Our experience with Hector was amazing. He installed cabinets, lighting, and electrical work in our garage (basically remodeled the garage). He is extremely hard-working and treated the job as if he was doing it for his own house: no shortcuts. His prices are very reasonable and he is a man of his word! You cannot go wrong with Hector! Excellent work and we look forward to working with him on ALL upcoming projects. We have found a handyman for life!

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

George and his team did a kitchen, laundry room and dining room remodel as well as our electrical panel and plumbing for us and it turned out great! We went from a 70's kitchen that was completely gutted to a beautiful up-to-date kitchen. George and his team knew what they were doing and did it well. Thank you George, Danny, Greg, Edgar and Gilbert! Patty M.

We hired Louis after we had hired another company who ruined our kitchen cabinets. Louis was very professional and did an amazing job on our cabinets. He had to fix what the other company ruined. We would recommend Louis to anyone who wants to hire a professional who takes pride in their job. We are very happy with his work and can't wait to hire him again to do the rest of our cabinets in our house.

I contacted Precision after being referred to them by a neighbor. They answered the phone promptly and worked around my schedule. I was surprised that they could schedule me after 6p and there was no additional pricing. The technician arrived within the 2 hour appointment window and was very professional. He diagnosed the problem and was really good about showing me what he was seeing so I felt comfortable with what he was talking about. He gave me a couple of different recommendations based on what I was comfortable paying and how long I was going to be living here. We agreed on the repair and price and he was even able to save me some money on the work when I showed him my AAA card. He replace the springs, cables and rollers on the door and I have to say it has never been so quiet! Victor was here about an hour and impressed me with his level of knowledge, explaining things in a way I understood and cleaned up when he was done. I was very happy with the service and will recommend Precision to anyone.

From the moment I connected with Chad, I felt a sense of comfort and support in helping fix my garage door. He walked me through the entire process and provided me with a wide range of options. While other companies would price gouge me, Chad showed true integrity and was transparent with his costs and all that was involved. From beginning to end I felt 100% confident that I was getting the most value and best service. His professionalism was top notch. The work quality was second to none. He accomplished, what other garage door repair companies quoted me for, in half the time and price. If anybody, including myself, needs future garage door help I know I can depend on Chad's knowledge and expertise.

I contacted James in the mid of night right after we failed to fix the garage by ourselves. He responded quickly and unlike other estimates, he broke down the costs with me individually according to my description at 11 PM. Soon we scheduled for a fix the next morning. James arrived on time and looked at our problems thoroughly before making the conclusion, he also explained thoroughly how why and what are causing problems, and in case it happens again what should we do. He then fixed the problem in a professional manner, ensuring he will come to fix the rest the next day. Definitely Recommended! Our garage problem: -Lose spring caused unbalance -Different scale bottom weather seal channel

James was great! I described what happened with our garage door on the phone and he gave me an estimate. He came out at the agreed appointment time and repaired the door quickly. He also took the time to inspect the whole system and make sure everything was working properly. He is very knowledgeable, polite and efficient. I was concerned the repair was going to be costly, but it was very reasonable! Thank you, James!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.
