Eli is definetly someone i recommend for any construction needs. Eli did a great job refacing my kitchen, he has a friendly crew and made sure they sealed the kitchen completely with plastic sheeting i was amazed not one drop of dust went into the house. I will definetly hire Eli again for other projects.

James was amazing - he went above and beyond on installing my vanities, but I also hired him to do all my kitchen recessed lighting and did a great job in bypassing the ballast (or blaster! - inside joke). I will continue to hire James for any other needs I will have in the future.

We hired Excel Construction (Eyal) to completely remodeling our kitchen and to design and build a large wet bar. The remodeling job that they did included the demolition of the existing spaces, the removal of several existing walls, rewiring of some electrical outlets and switches, re-plumbing the new spaces, remove and install new flooring, new upper and lower cabinets, install new marble countertops, installing new lighting fixtures, fresh interior paint, some drywall repairs and adding a new large island at the kitchen. Eyal and his working crew did a stunning remodeling job. Eyal create for us a complete design of the work based on what we wanted and needed, guided us through some space limitations of the house and presented to us some different ideas that met our needs. The remodeling job was delivered on time, within budget and with high quality. Eyal was at the house every day and made sure that the remodeling progress is on track. He was there for each and every step of the work, which was extremely important to us. We highly recommend them for anyone who is searching for high quality remodeling or construction work.

Angelika Mehrens Designs & Mural World and Angelika's unique work as a fine artist is outstanding. Exceptional actually. The fact is there are very few artists I've ever worked with and witnessed create, let alone enjoyed the quality within my own space where I literally can say 'I like every piece'...there's not one I've seen that I did not think was beautiful and aesthetic...yes I have a favorite over another - I've told her it's like a greatest hits album of music - except hers is a growing portfolio of canvas and murals. As it happens, I am an executive of a Life Consulting business and we've commissioned 7 pieces for the space currently located in Santa Monica, California - We and our clients couldn't be more pleased. In closing, she's also very service oriented and professional to the final touch. It is with pleasure I highly recommend Angelika Mehrens creative work. Entrepreneur - Ryan Spick

I interviewed 4 other interior designers and chose DACH design because Debby and Christine "got it". I gave all designers the same information regarding the feel I was going for, my husband's and my likes and dislikes, and our budget. Christine and Debby came back with an outstanding design that worked within our budget (though I did end up splurging on a couple of items) and were very flexible with our timelines. Their presentation was professional and informative and let us know exactly what we would be getting into with our project. They had good quality control and oversaw all the contractors that came in to work on our condo. My husband and I love the outcome and look forward to many years of enjoyment in our beautifully designed home. It was a pleasure working with Debby and Christine and I highly recommend DACH Design.

Scott is an amazing guy to have around our house. A contractor would have cost a lot of money, but Scott gives the same quality if not better. He has built us a fence, tiled our kitchen floor, painted the outside of our house & has replaced some windows. Scott is a wonderful guy/contractor to have around & has been with my husband & I for a year now.

Jesus, was incredible. I wouldn't even waste time calling anyone else. He replaced a kitchen sink facet for me. He arrived on time, completed the job with no problem, and actually ran and got a part I didn't have and cleaned up when the job was finished. Trust me just call him.

I first met Brad Snapir in 2011 when we met to discuss adding a second story onto our house in West Los Angeles which included a master bedroom, large bath, two closets and an additional reading room in back of the bedroom. All in all we added around 900 feet or perhaps a little more. It took us many meetings over almost a year's time before my husband and I were ready and prepared to begin the building process. Throughout this whole time Brad was understanding, patient and excellent at offering suggestions as to our remodel and willing to spend hours and hours meeting with us. We began the remodel in September of 2012 and we were back in the house in March of 2013 which was extremely quick. Needless to say there were questions and problems which arose during the building process but my husband, Brad and I were always able to work out whatever the problem was to everyone's satisfaction. If something had to be altered or changed in any way, Brad did it and did it well. We were very happy with the outcome of the remodel and happily moved back into the house after only 6 months although everyone told us it would be a year at least. Well they were wrong. Brad and his crew did the work quickly and well. If anything was not done exactly as I wanted they fixed it to be the way I wanted. I so appreciated the work that when I decided to remodel my kitchen in 2015 I immediately called Brad for the job. He worked with me in designing what I needed and ordering the necessary appliances, tile and countertops. I absolutely love the kitchen and would change nothing. It is exactly what I had in mind. The one other thing I want to point out about Brad is that over the years I have had several very very small jobs at the house which Brad has been so willing to just send one or two or three of his guys in a most timely manner and get the small job done. This has been a god-send as we all know how difficult it is to get work done on small jobs. I would recommend Brad and his company to anyone who wants a remodel large or small done and done well. Very grateful I came across thumbtack, as it connected me with different contractors. Joe gave me an exact estimate for my kitchen remodel. I choose him to remodel my kitchen, since he answered my questions in an upfront manner, without any sales pitch or feel. Plus, he was the only contractor who gave me an exact quote, unlike the other contractors who had said they could only give me an approximate estimate. Joe was always calm and in control during the remodeling process and helped me feel calm throughout the process. My kitchen is unrecognizable, and that is a good thing. A complete makeover! Ecstatic with the results. I highly recommend!

Joe and his crew were very clean and professional. He would have completed our project a week ahead of time however we continue to add on additional projects. My husband and I appreciated all of the work that was completed. We had three bathrooms remodeled, ceilings scraped and retextured. We had our fireplace resurfaced and many other things done that included electricial. We are very happy and satisfied with all of the work. We will have Joe and crew back to remodel our kitchen and patio next year. Thank you Joe!!

I am writing this to say a big thank you for our kitchen. Our kitchen was not an easy remodeling job. We had quotes from other companies and had been told it was too complicated. After Mike the owner of HLS Remodeling and Design had completed my brother's kitchen (which I love) I decided to give Mike a call. Mike came to us very quickly with a quote and had some really awesome ideas with what we could do. It was really easy to just leave it up to Mike because he knew what he was doing. Mike was also great in sending us color samples to help us with choosing a color scheme. The process of installation went smoothly. Mike was in touch with us to make sure that everything was happening at the right time. We are really pleased with our new kitchen and appreciate the quality of the cabinetry. Thanks Mike and the team of HLS Remodeling and Design.

My kitchen was in major need of a decluttering and organizing overhaul. My cabinets were overflowing with pantry items, too many dishes/glasses, bakeware and mismatched tupperware. I couldn't find anything I needed and items were spilling out of shelves. Design and Order came to my rescue! I was given a consultation first to discuss my needs and concerns and then of course, a game plan. LeiLani helped me go through every single cabinet and not once did I feel overwhelmed. She was very calm and patient through a process that I should have felt frazzled by. Not only did I weed out all of the things I didn't need, but I was able to donate a lot of my items. I felt very good about a lot of the decisions I made while cleaning out and reorganizing my kitchen. She made the process smooth and simple for me. I felt relieved when I saw the end product of my kitchen and was so happy with all the organization and new space! LeiLani even gave me tips on how to keep my kitchen from getting cluttered again and a few recommendations on other projects in my house. I am one happy girl and I will definitely be using Design and Order's services again! Give them a try...you won't regret it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
