Bruce was great! Fast, honest - told me up front what the issue was, what he'd need to do to fix it. He told me how much it would be for the part and the labor. He brought the part and was able to come fix it same day! I'm back in business and happy wuth my experience. Thanks Bruce, you'll be my first call in any plumbing needs.

I would hire Juan in the future, as I was very pleased with the work he did for a very challenging plumbing issue. His communication is excellent, which was helpful when explaining my issue. He also knows what he's doing as he was able to explain what was going on, and he came up with the right fix that was needed, which was redoing the silicone sealing on my sewage basin. He is very detail oriented and cares about doing excellent work, as he spent a few hours making sure every possible gap would be sealed. He also made a recommendation for adding venting around the basin in the basement to help with airflow, something no other past plumber had ever thought of. Juan is friendly, professional, and takes pride in his work, and for that value I'm willing to hire him again in the future.

I'm very happy that I was connected with TJ and House to Home on Thumbtack. I recently bought a home and initially requested a quote for the installation of two new toilets. I then asked TJ about some additional work and we set up a few projects. TJ's prices are reasonable, his quality of work is excellent, he has a great attitude and he's extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of home repairs. He's helped me focus on items that need immediate attention because they affect the structure and integrity of the house and has also informed me about things to consider down the line. Things have gone so well that in addition to the toilets, he's installed a kitchen faucet, a cooktop and hood, which required extensive repairs of the venting, gas, and electric lines (former owner did a lot of shoddy stuff around the house). He's currently installing a new microwave above the wall oven and reframing the cabinet to accommodate it. The next project will involve some plumbing updates. TJ is in demand and has a busy schedule, but he's always very responsive, always shows up and leaves things cleaner than when he found them. He also goes above and beyond the call of duty when he sees a problem and fixes it just because. For example, he installed a new light fixture in the laundry room because the old one was an eyesore. Without hesitation, I highly recommend TJ for all of your home repair needs.

Originally hired Shiner plumbing. They cancelled the last minute, just like other reviews had posted. So I called Elite plumbing and they were able to send someone else the same day. Will definitely recommend this company. And stay away from Shiner plumbing.

Carlos is the man. There was some confusion with scheduling but Carlos showed up and did the job. He installed my Aquasana system, installed my new Moen kitchen faucet, fixed a leaking outdoor spicket and replaced a part in my toilet that turns out to have been installed improperly by the people who switched out the toilet when I had purchased my home. Carlos even had to hurry to Home Depot to get the part for my toilet (before they closed) and he did so and was cool about it. Now I have clean drinking water and all my plumbing issues have been fixed, all for a great price.

Alex showed up ready to work. We took some time to discuss what the final result should look like and then he went to town on an outdoor project on a very hot summer day. I appreciate he took aesthetics into account in places that I hadn’t thought about. He was also sensitive to how long certain things would take and let me know in advance he was trying to save me hours. He also gave me some advice on a small plumbing problem. He was thoughtful about cleaning up, though one piece of critical feedback is he left some refuse on the tree lawn which I had to put into a bin. I’d definitely hire him again. Attaching a photo of the cage he made to protect our tomatoes from the rats. He matched the wood frame with our existing raised beds.

Scope - replace hallway floors (due to slight flooding/leak); gut reno one of the bathrooms; customize hallway closet(s). Pros: - Contractor was prompt to respond and quick to commence the job - Joe and his team are very professional - Quality of work is good - It is apparent that State Wide has a Subject Matter Expert for every aspect of the reno (different folks for plumbing, carpentry, tiles, flooring). Most likely 3rd parties but pros nonetheless. - flexible payment structure (also accepts CCs) Cons: - Execution was very slow; perhaps Joe's team was focused on bigger projects (it was mentioned on a few occasions) and it was apparent that our reno was not prioritized. - there were items that should have been spec'd out and ordered as to avoid delays (e.g. floor should have been matched on day1, subway tiles etc..). Numerous days were wasted as the team was waiting on the materials - my biggest frustration with the reno was the lack of empathy and accountability. Excuses/justifications were presented instead of just owning up to the significant delay (work was supposed to be executed in 10-14 days max; it took 30 days). It would have been completely fine if the delay was communicated properly instead of us hounding the team. Overall, we are happy with the renovation.

Tony went above and beyond to fix several issues with extremely polite and professional service. He added a regulator to the house, located and fixed a sprinkler leak, and replaced a broken valve in the backyard. His price was perfect, he responded within minutes and fixed everything the same day (on a Sunday). Honestly this was the best experience we've had when dealing with a plumbing issue, and from now on will not deal with anyone else except Tony. Highly Recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
