I got 2 ceiling fans installed in two separate bedrooms. Nima was very professional and got right down to business as soon as he got there. He didn't leave any mess in any of the rooms. The price he gave me for 2 ceiling fans was more than fair, I would definitely hire Nima for all of my electrical needs.

Jose was the first to respond to our job for leveling the kitchen floor and laying our new wood floor. He showed up when he said he would and gave a fair price. He also completed the job on time. We are very happy with the job he did, and we will be using him for our master bath. I will leave that review once that job is done.

My experience with Houman was absolutely amazing even though his not licensed but his knowledge was just like he was licensed ,I hired him to expand my bathroom and remodel pretty much everything and also I needed him to relocate a door in the living room on a different spot. On the bathroom had to remove the old wiring for lights due to being old and changed them for new ones. He also did the tiles and put new cabinet and shower. Also in my bedroom I needed more lights in the ceiling due to it was to dark. I'm glad I hired him, his super fast, affordable and clean.

Jesse came out for a bath tub we have been having problems with for years. He used a camera to find the problem and gave us great detail on the problem and his suggested solutions. He had said we needed to replace cast iron plumbing under a bath tub. He was definitely correct, he showed us the old drains and explained why this happens in older homes. There were a few problems that arose due to plumbing in an older house, no fault of Jesse's, and he never tried to raise the rate or cover up the problems. He fixed all he said he would and more. I will be recommending Jesse and Top Service Plumbing to anyone who asks me about a plumber.

I got 5 quotes from plumbers to install a kitchen faucet, disposal, and pipe all the drain pipes. I redid my kitchen and ripped out everything so he had to repipe the drains from scratch. Shawn with Affordable plumbing was the only one to give me an upfront hourly rate. Affordable plumbing is truley afforadable. Shawn was very responsive to messages and texts. He was very accommodating and was able to fullfill my request the next day on a Saturday. His work is clean and professional. The pipe work he did looks a lot cleaner then what was there before. He even offered to install the dishwasher and drill a hole through the counter top to install a soap dispenser that came with our new faucet while he was here. I was a little worried bc the counter tops were brand New but he drilled a hole with no problems. Bottle line: I would recommend Shawn and affordable plumbing to family, friends, and anyone looking for quality plumbing at a reasonable price. Thanks again Shawn

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

Marathon is the only company I trust to work on my 2 homes. They remodeled my out dated 3 bed/1 bath house and turned it into a beautiful and spacious 3 bed/2 bath. They up graded my galley kitchen and turned it into a gorgeous and spacious open kitchen. They added a much needed bathroom, turned my very small living room into a great room, gave me functional closets, extra storage space and got rid of that unsightly popcorn ceiling. Isaac worked with me hand-in-hand from start to finish and insured I was happy with the progress on my house. He did excellent work from design, to demolition, to rebuilding. He did everything from plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, drywall, flooring, paint (indoors and out), fixtures.....and more. Marathon completed the remodel on time, went above and beyond, and did it at a very good price. It is rare to find an honest, trust worthy, company that takes pride in their work. Well, Marathon is it and I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Marathon!

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

Thumbtack introduced Patrick to me within 60 minutes of posting my project (a fireplace renovation). We met early the next day and were so impressed with his knowledge, attitude and availability that we hired him on the spot. Our project began almost immediately and was completed within the week. We showed him a picture of what we were looking for and he and his co-worker replicated it to a "T". We found his work excellent, his attitude positive and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again or to recommend him to others.

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

1st - I want to say that Bill was very flexible and worked around our time schedule. That is always a plus. We had just about 2 weeks to complete the remodeling of our one bedroom cottage to get it ready for my mom to move into after recovering from surgery. Once all household items were moved out, that left just two weeks for the repairs to be done before the flooring. He repaired or replaced pretty much everything in the cottage. This included prepping and painting all the walls, replacing the plumbing in the shower and vanity. He repaired all of the wood windows, reconfigured the kitchen cabinet doors, bathroom, fixed the electrical problem in the kitchen. He was able to complete all of the repairs on time and on budget. His bid was very reasonable and less than the other 2 bids we received and we were quite happy that we selected him to do the job. 2nd - quality of workmanship was outstanding. He did an awesome job! Family members are awed by the quality of his work. I have hired him for a project at my house. Our family members will be using him at their homes as well. I have already recommended him to my friend who is going to remodel part of her home. He is very experienced.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
