We started using Mike's services when we switched elementary schools last September. Our son was just beginning Common Core and we wanted to make sure he could keep up with the rest of the class as he is one of the youngest kids. Mike's lessons on basic math skills--such as place value, equations, counting money and telling time--have been an invaluable part of our son's academic success. Mike also makes math fun and interesting for our son--so much so that he looks forward to Mike's visits. He is friendly and knowledgeable and easy to schedule. We want to note that we had tried another tutor last summer. In the 12 weeks we used her (multiple times each week), our son did not progress much at all. That was the main reason we looked around for another tutor. (That and the fact that our son was starting to hate math.) Instead of multiple weekly sessions, it's one weekly in-depth session. Mike's background, skills and experience as a tutor are clearly evident. We highly recommend him.

We highly recommend Lois For tutoring. She is well known in Honolulu and has years of experience. She tutored our granddaughter when she needed to take the entrance exams into private schools. Lois has great knowledge of children and skill in getting them to do their work. Her lessons were challenging and fun. Our grandaughter could hardly wait to return to her next session. We wish Lois was here to tutor our grandaughter in her college SATS. Carol Lehman

Joyee Lin of Thinque has been nothing short of amazing. Professional with results to show. My daughter started working with Joyee a couple of months ago. Within six lessons, my daughter's composite ACT score went from a 28 prior to working with Joyee to a 32. Amazingly, her science score went from a 25 to a 32. Those numbers are the end result of Joyee's professional approach to teaching. During the lesson, Joyee utilizes a number of methods to present the material. It must be said that my daughter took his instruction seriously and worked hard on the material which was provided to her. The result was a good example of team work in which my daughter could receive, in addition to immediate instruction, quick review and understanding after working through the material. Joyee makes it easy to work around a busy lifestyle as he schedules and responds to correspondence promptly. We can't offer him enough praise. Joyee is offering an amazing service and we were so glad to have been referred to him.

We chose Elite and were so happy we did! My son struggled in math and he needed more support than the school offered. College prep is tough, I couldn't even help him! Haha Well, we called Elite and Eric matched him up with Tony. We liked that Tony came to our house for a free session before I had to commit to ordering sessions. I always wondered how that worked so you know your kid will for sure like the tutor and want to learn! We're very pleased, thanks again.

Jonathan is approachable and patience. My daughter is 11 years old and is currently preparing to take the ISEE (Independent Schools Entrance Exam) in December 2016. This is her first experience with getting one-on-one tutorial help for the language art portion of the test. After just a few tutoring session, she has so much more confidence in approaching the essay portion of the test. Jonathan's methodology teaches her how to systematically approach each essay prompt as well as how to capture the reader's attention quickly. As for the reading comprehension portion of the test, he is helping her to find a pattern of where the test questions would likely be derived from the reading passages. Currently, her reading test practice score improves tremendously. She is able to read the passages and potentially predict the potential areas of importance. In addition, Jonathan also reviews the strategies of how to take standardized test. My daughter looks forward to every tutorial lesson because she knows that she can improve her ISEE test score.

Sarah helped my son to pass his Algebra M03 class at Moorpark College after failing the first time. My son struggled with math in high school and generally has an aversion to the subject. We hired Sarah and he not only passed but earned a B grade! Sarah is very kind and considerate and cares about her students. We will be using her again.

Cindy and everyone at Rainbow tutoring are some of the kindest individuals I have met. The wisdom Cindy bestowed on me while helping me through my college application process will be with my forever and I am so grateful. Cindy helped me figure out what I wanted in my college experience and gave me the tools to get myself there. She introduced schools that I wouldn't have seen myself at and helped me get myself to Santa Clara University. She is beyond inspirational and such an empowering woman that is a role model to any and all of her clients. Cindy and her team are smart, dedicated, and reliable- they are always able to help and are great mentors to have before going off out of high school and into a college or real life environment. Cindy especially is very clear and really walks you through the steps to understanding in both Math, Writing, and the SAT Prep. I am so thankful to have met and able to work with you guys !

I took the ACT, and Kristi saved me. On my first practice test, my composite score was 19. After studying with Kristi and Adam, I ended up with a 33 composite on the final test. And considering that I am NOT a math or science person, this score had seemed unimaginable to me before. I got into my first choice school and I know that I honestly could not have done it without the amazing tutoring I received.

He helped me with my SAT test. He started by evaluating my english and quantitative levels and detecting the areas to improve. His lessons were well planned. He focused on grammar correction, verbal tenses, sentence construction and vocabulary. In maths, he focused on algebra , functions, geometry and testing techniques. Highly recommended.

Three years ago, my granddaughter's special education testing report stated that she was significantly behind her peers in most academic areas. We met Carleen with Skills for Success Learning through our homeschooling charter school. Carleen has provided Cogmed Working Memory Training and literacy tutoring. Last month, I received the latest special education testing report from the charter school...my granddaughter's academic skills showed amazing growth. She is now at or near grade grade level with most of her academic skills. The charter school's Educational Specialist was very surprised and impressed with my granddaughter's progress! I can’t say enough about how wonderful Carleen is. She not only is helping Devin with her academic skills but also has helped her with her social skills.

Finally!! My wife and I had been searching for an SAT tutor for our high schooler for many many months before we found Shahin, and we could not be more THRILLED. Before him we had the experience of hiring many bad tutors on thumbtack and elsewhere who were either not knowledgable or just not good teachers. Shahin was not like them - he actually cares about your student's success and will take the time to prepare for sessions ahead of time. He made sure to get feedback along to the way to see if our son was comprehending the lessons, and made changes when necessary. A breath of fresh air after experiencing so many tutors in it for the wrong reasons. Our son takes the SAT in October and we know he'll perform better after Shahin's guidance. My wife, son, and I thank you for everything!

I started working with Stable Genius Prep in January to prepare for the General GRE. We assessed right away that the Quantitative material was my weak spot, and where I'd need the most help. I'm the type of person who really has to be able to understand something before I can master it, and I don't naturally think mathematically. In other words I can't just memorize formulae and when to apply them. Andrew was excellent with this. Even when I got answers right, he would make sure to go over with me what the principles were behind the problem. He has clearly had much experience tutoring pupils. Perhaps what had the most impact on me, and on my desire to work hard, was the patience he exhibited; it may have not even registered with him, but I noticed it. In the beginning I worked at an excruciatingly slow pace through everything from Arithmetic to Statistics and Probability. It took two hours just to get through ten problems. By the end of our prep, I was able to work through the same number of questions in about 15-20 minutes, and at a high level of difficulty. While my essay writing is normally solid, it was difficult to exhibit that within the 30 minute time limit. Andrew reviewed my practice essays with me and really helped me to develop strategies to write strong essays that follow the test instructions within the time allotted. Ultimately my Math score went from the 48th percentile up to the 83rd percentile! I couldn't be happier with my experience, and with the results we were able to get. I say "we" because by the end I felt like we were a team, with Andrew as my coach. He is a master of the material, and he understands how to teach it effectively. I definitely recommend Stable Genius Prep to anyone looking not only to get over a certain threshold, but to really maximize their potential and do as well as they possibly can!

I got accepted into John Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth (CTY), so I've been studying Geometry for the past few weeks. There's been a lot that I haven't learned yet in school, so my parents hired this company to help me. Whenever I have a question, my tutor always explains it fully. He's been great at helping me keep up with this fast paced program. I definitely think I'll have an A for my final grade.

We hired Ed to provide Algebra II tutoring for our son Tim at the beginning of the 2015 school year. I can say that after a year working with Ed, Tim’s Algebra skills have improved significantly, and he has found a great friend and mentor in Ed. We will definitely be hiring Ed again this year to tutor our other sons! Overall, Ed is calm, good natured, knows how to handle teenagers, and is very knowledgeable in the field of mathematics. The best part is that Ed is a UCLA grad – LOVE that! I highly recommend him.

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

My 10th grade daughter had a wonderful Tutisto tutor, Paulina, for Math Analysis (pre-calculus). My daughter attends a highly-rated charter high school but we opted for her to take online Math Analysis via Laurel Springs under Paulina’s guidance. My daughter looked forward to her weekly 1.5 hour sessions with Paulina. If she had questions during the week, my daughter would text Paulina who responded immediately. Paulina kept me informed of my daughter’s progress throughout the year. Paulina is exceptionally organized, responsive, smart, patient and communicative. We are very grateful to have found her through a friend and will continue to have her tutor Calculus next year to augment the high school teacher’s lessons. My only regret is that we didn’t find Paulina earlier, as we would have hired her to help my daughter learn geometry in 8th grade!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
