I personally have been to lots of counselors through the years for lots of reasons. My husband and I just had our first session and it was AMAZING! I have never left a first time session feeling so confident that he can help repair my marriage! I ABSOLUTELY will be referring him to everyone I know and have already started doing so!

I was looking for a coach not a counselor and I felt like Mike matched my needs. I don't want to just talk about my feelings I want to set an action plan so that I can measure my improvements through the sessions. So far Mike has helped me get a hold of some resources that are helping me see those improvements. He works on setting a framework based on your needs and its very visual which works great for me.

Stephanie is the universal counselor. I have no doubt she could help anyone with any struggle. My boyfriend and I were dealing with one of the toughest hurdles in a relationship, loss of trust. We were never great at communicating and were not open to therapy at the start. I agreed to try a session with Stephanie. I was NOT disappointed. After one hour with her help, I felt at ease with myself and hope for my relationship. She allows you to work together in the room and reach conclusions on your own and with her help. This was perfect for me, I don't like being talked at. She listens carefully, is patient and supportive. She leaves you with exercises to use at home that strengthened our connection and understanding of each other tenfold. We are very grateful to have found Stephanie Mintz.

Brad was there for him when I needed him the most. He was the one who reminded me "SELF LOVE" that gave me the courage to leave my husband who was cheating on me. Brad genuinely cares about me as a person, now just another client of his. He never assumes what is best for me.. he always ask me why I do the things I do... He makes me ponder on a lot of my thoughts and decisions... He never judges.. he is not just a coach.. he is a friend.. he cares and loves people and that is what makes him so successful in what he does... With Brad's help, I was able to put my past behind me and move on with my life.. He shows me that TRUE LOVE is out there.. Just ask the universe for it and it will bring it to you... Brad brought a lot of his life experiences to the table... he is compassionate and empathetic because he speaks and coaches from his personal experiences.. He is real... not some counselors with head knowledge... I highly recommend Brad if you are lost and need to find who you truly are...

Ravid really helped me process and make sense of the reservations I had related to reconnecting with an ex romantically and giving things a second chance . She was very influential in opening my mind to see all the positive possibilities there were that I was gonna miss out on by being closed-minded. I highly recommend her services either it be for personal or business issues you may be experiencing.

In aproximately 2003 my husband and I were counseling with Mark. We were desperate for help, understanding, and relief. We literally felt something destroying us inwardly, confusing every thing we believed in. This one thing we could not overcome was killing our marriage. After searching books, talking to other counselors, going to marriage conferences.... really we couldn't quite put our finger on it or get to the root. However Mark was discerning, compassionate, non judgmental and real. He was able to help my husband let his guard down and be honest, open and willing ;by the power of the Holy Spirit working through him. We did counsel for a good several months but it was do to my husbands unwillingness to be completely honest in the beginning. I will never forget that evening when my husband returned home form what may have been one of their last sessions. I was nearly afraid there was such a notable difference in his eyes and his tone of voice and his entire demeanor. He was calm, he was changed, transformed he was peaceful, He was free! The shame, the guilt was gone. His eyes were clear , His heart was lifted. I had my husband back in a way I had not ever known him. God really used mark to bring about a deliverance we never knew was available. This was 12 years ago. Of course like anything one must continue to do what is required to keep the results achieved. If we were talking weight loss , one would continue to eat healthy and exercise. Lets just say we can use some review it has been awhile now (13 years or more) and sometimes a refresher course is needed. I plan to contact Mark for a check up. I believe the Lord led me to find his business I did not know existed. At the time we counseled, it was more casual not a business. I am so happy to have found him after all these years. I highly recommend Mark as he is a great tool in God's hand to bring loving compassionate help to those hurting and bound up by their past and own short comings. Blessings to this business!

My practice is based on a holistic approach that focuses on the behavioral, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual's life. I have over thirty years of experience. Healing should not take years. I work to help you identify and heal core issues, and develop a gentle practice that can accelerate your healing. Clients I have served have said that my holistic and integrative process has done more for them than other therapies they have tried over the years. Individuals and couples tell me they have been able to identify core issues, and heal by practicing focused, individualized healing techniques. I have found over the past thirty years of helping individual, couples and families that healing occurs quicker and with more lasting results when people learn to develop a practice that is consistent and motivating, and which produces valid results. I also have years of experience working with people who have various developmental disabilities, such as Asperger syndrome, autism, and pervasive developmental disorder.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
