Amin was great. He was punctual and even assembled a bed I bought from Overstock which came in almost 100 pieces. He was very clean and honest, including telling me that he didn't recommend the lock I'd picked and offered to get a safer lock change for my home. I ended up adding several odd jobs, including mounting a different TV onto a pre-existing TV mount. Even though some parts were missing he figured it all out. And he was reasonable for all these jobs that took 4 hours plus to complete (the bed And dresser took him 3 hours).

I have to say hiring Nima for some electrical repair and installation was one of the best ideas possible. He did an absolutely phenomenal job from beginning to end. I had personally interviewed seven other electricians to install floodlights motion detectors and a beam for home. Nima responded immediately, professionally, detailed in his process and procedure, and came in well below any of the other estimate. His work was flawless. I couldn't be happier and I promise if you hire him you will not be disappointed. He is a decent good man who does fantastic work for a low cost.

Awesome service -- Gabriel and Noe installed a light fixture in my living room. We couldn't be happier with their work. Their prices were very fair -- even for an unanticipated trip to Home Depot for parts. I would definitely hire them again.

T.J. at House To Home is an expert tradesman. He's highly versed in all things home-improvement, honest, accessible, communicative, and very efficient. We had a dryer vent installed into/out of the wall of our old craftsman home (that had never previously been done) and T.J solved all problems with ease and finesse. Would HIGHLY recommend.

Roger is a true professional and his performances are outstanding . Initially, l requested his service for installing a security light, while he was completing that job he performed other home improvements around the house . He has demonstrated enormous enthusiasm ,energy and willingness to take several tasks and responsibilities simultaneously . He is very honest, polite and courteous and a true gentleman which is an important criteria for me. Roger is a great person to work with. He is very detail oriented and his fees are very reasonable . I give him a high recommendation . I am looking forward to continue my collaboration with him and in fact I have already appointed him as my property manager.

Houman helped us improve our home by removing a large, outdated fireplace and chimney. This was no simple job. It required hammering out 7 tons of brick and concrete that made up the fireplace/chimney. The vacated space was then rebuilt to house a French door. An adjacent existing sliding door was also replaced with an identical French door. Houman was always on time, and held true to his estimate. He is very detail oriented, communicative, very clean, and organized. It was not just Houman, the rest of team were equally amiable and trustworthy. The best thing that I can say is that we will definitely employ Houman for future renovations to our home.

LGO’s work has yet to be finished or re-done. I paid LGO a total of $4,076.95, out of which $3,700 was for labor. I counted the hours on site (my home), and calculated that I paid roughly $264 per hour for approximately 14 hours on site (my home). That’s very far from $59/hour indicated by LGO in their stated fee on Thumbtack. I hired LGO to do several repairs/installations that fit with “handyman work,” which were done July 16 –19 at our home. I notified the owner on July 29 of items that needed to be completed or re-done by the crew, and I also described issues that could have caused harm. On August 9, the owner and I came to an agreement about next steps, but it is now August 19, I have not been contacted by the crew to complete or re-do the work. I share my unsatisfactory experience to be fair both to professionals who give excellent service and also to customers who seek quality work at the stated price. I usually give as positive a review as I can, but I can’t this time, despite my liking the owner and crew, I support independent business, and some of LGO’s work was good enough.

Debby did an amazing make-over of several rooms in our home - a 400 sq ft sunroom, a living room, converted a spare bedroom into an office, a guest room and, most recently, master bedroom and bathroom. She makes incredible improvements in the use of space and her design ideas and choice of colors and fabric are fresh and interesting. She also comes up with cost-saving ideas to use some of our existing furniture and accessories. She managerd the contractor jobs, ensurinng professional and on-time work. Debby is a joy to work with, and we are absolutely delighted with the transformation she has made to our home.

Carlos was exceptional. This is the kind of experience you hope to have with a professional. Carlos arrived early with his crew of Angel, Jesus and Rudy. The men were all courteous and helpful. The interior was being painted for a senior citizen friend with health issues. They were careful about her possessions, covered everything with plastic to protect the home. Carlos and crew did a GREAT job. When done they cleaned up everything and hauled away trash. I plan to hire him again for my own home. This is one of those rare experiences when you can give a well deserved 10 of 10 rating. Highly recommend!!!!

I hired Eldon and HSD Services based on prior reviews, punctuality in setting up estimate and start date, and value for project of painting select rooms/areas inside a home getting ready for rental. We met at the property on Monday, he was hired on Wednesday and ready to begin on Thursday. Due to technical and personal hindrances on my part, they didn't begin until Friday at my request but was understanding and flexible as I added an additional task of painting and hanging closet doors forgot about in the garage. The job was complete within 2 days which was extremely helpful. I highly recommend them and would use them again in the future.

Jeff installed a solar tube in my home and did a terrific job. There was a discrepancy in overall brightness expectations and I was pleased to find that Jeff took the necessary steps to deliver a final work product with which I’m very happy. I would recommend Jeff for solar tube installation projects.

GIM installed a new cool roof by gaf shingles and a solar system for my home. They helped me to pick out the proper shingle color and even tried to match the panels to look good with the new roof. The solar system was top quality American made panels and it came with system monitoring. All the pipes on my wall were painted to match the home. It was great knowing one company took care of all my needs. Give GIM a try if your looking for home improvement needs! Thanks team!

I am remodeling my home in the palisades and wanted to add some 30 ft of complicated wainscoting to another room. I tried thumbtack: Thaddeus Martel made a reasonable proposal, got the job and did it perfectly well. The price was fair, the work was on time, everything was cleanded up afterwards. I strongly recommend him as a competent, reliable and polite craftsman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
