My experience with Shape Up Studios was absolutely top notch! I am an avid action sports enthusiast (MTB, Surfing, skiing, climbing etc) and as a result suffered a series of knee and back injuries. Fortunately, none required surgery but I was barred from physical activity for the better part of 6 months. In short, I grew weaker and wider during that time. After extensive rehab with my physical therapists and light physical activity i felt i was ready for strength training to get back in shape and work to get strong for a solid winter. I got cleared by my physician and therapists to do so and started searching for good trainers. Enter Markshane and the team at shape up studios. Markshane took the time and effort to understand where I was coming from, the nature of my injuries and what my goals were. He has an impressive setup with which he can set a biometric baseline and share, in layman's terms, where you stand in a holistic fitness spectrum so you can set realistic goals. It was clear from my first appointment that I had found the right team. Once my goals were set, I was introduced to the person that was going to be working one on one with me for the next 3 months: Manny. To put it bluntly, Manny kicked my ass for 3 months, two times a week. He is a hell of a trainer with a good eye for form and a good sense of how to push his clients so they can get the most out of their workouts. I learned a great deal from this man about form and how to structure workouts to get the most out of them. He was extremely encouraging the entire time and made a point of customizing my workouts with a focus on functional strength that i could use in the activities I love. I went from being scared of a kettle bell swing during my first week to doing deadlifts with confidence and something resembling grace and good form. I lost 7lbs (not bad considering my 3 months included thabksgiving and the holidays) and my back has never felt stronger. Im stoked, my body feels great, and I'm extremely grateful for the work Manny, Markshane and the team put in to help me get my results. The gym itself has everything you could ask for and it has a great vibe. You always have the space to workout comfortably, it has all the bells and whistles, you dont feel judged, everyone is encouraging, and everyone is there to work hard for themselves. The good vibes are key as I feel many gyms have too much of a bro-ey edge to them. At the end of the day though, it comes down to you. How bad do you want it? It will still require hard work on your end, good discipline, good diet (my weakest point and the root cause of not having lost more weight than I could have) and more than anything, good attitude. Go out there and get it people! I'm off to enjoy winter for now but will most likely be back when the Krispy Kremes get the best of me! I have been working out with Vishal for 6 years. I lost over 100 lbs and at 64 I am in the best shape of my life. I am able to do things now that I only could dream of before, as an example I do Kung Fu, kick boxing and sparring, I went to South America and Europe walking and hicking for days. I use to take 2 blood pressure meds and Lipitor for high cholesterol. Now all my blood work and cholesterol has been normal. The last 5 years I have been off all meds! All this I owe to Vishal.
I can't say enough about how great Nez & Robert are. When I started training with Nez, I considered myself to be pretty fit & very active already. I had already tried different kinds of workouts: bootcamp/circuit training, running, HIIT, boxing, etc. But, not lifting. I was a little intimidated at first because I joined FSU without knowing anyone, but Nez & the rest of the group really made me feel comfortable. My lifting journey began with surprises, of course. I lifted heavier than I thought I could for some lifts (lower body) & was weaker when it came to other ones (upper body), & worked out muscles I never knew existed. Nez pushed me every day for months & took me further than I ever thought I could. A lot of my body's overall transformation came from lifting & Nez's guidance. After completing three programs, I transitioned over to Robert's Olympic weightlifting program. This program continues to challenge me every day because it requires so much patience & technique. Robert is the best coach for this. He's knowledgeable & he has been nothing but supportive and patient throughout this process. My upper body's transformation has been amazing thanks to Robert. Lastly, Nez & Robert are hilarious to workout with. Count on cracking a lot of jokes while you workout (abs)!
I met Erica in one of the Crossfit boxes in Durham, NC where she was a coach. She was as great in coaching as she was an athlete. She made sure that we always had correct forms and proper techniques-- elements that are particularly important when you're doing intense exercises like crossfit. She didn't stop until we got it right. AND talk about pushing you to what you're capable of! With her coaching I definitely discovered that I was a lot stronger than I thought. Apart from her skills, she's just very fun to be around with which makes working out very enjoyable! Highly recommend her!
Being the assistant director , I feel it brings out the best in everyone. EA&C specializes in Indian classical ,contemporary , folk and Bollywood styles which gives me a diverse experience. Learning and choreographing so many dance styles with a lot of talented dancer troupe members are always fun.
Ray has an amazing eye for detail. I learned a lot of things about my posture and biomechanics that needed help, things that my coaches at a cro$$fit gym had ignored or not been well-educated enough to see. He helped me add almost 10 kilos to my snatch in a very short time and helped my positions in a wide variety of movements. Very flexible hours and a really great, small facility.
Vanessa is a great coach who offers a wealth of knowledge in fitness and weight loss. As a client she kept me motivated by giving me different workouts that were fun, taught me about which muscle groups I was working out and how to stretch properly. Vanessa offered insight into how to eat healthy to help me stick to my weight loss goals. Vanessa is very personable and professional. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to start working out again and doesn't want the intimidation of a big box gym. My experience alone has made me have to dig deep and remind myself why I'm gloving up with the 8Tribe team. Coach is always on time so I suggest you arrive early to warm up and be ready to work when the buzzer sounds. You can't put a price on the skills and training ethics you will develop. Daniel tailored an email that addressed all my concerns including the fact that I wanted to gain weight. Another competitor said she could help me "lose weight" so I could tell right away who would be listening to my needs. Daniel's first class was awesome and I could see that just like his email he tailored the small class so that everyone was individually coached and got a good workout. He has 3-4 small classes every day and I look forward to taking private training with him as well. His private gym is so nice compared to the big box gyms. He took time afterwards to go over my goals but the most impressive of all was the call I received the next day to see how I felt. I had told him in advance that I had shoulder and neck problems so I really wanted someone who had training for injuries. It turns out that I just need to build my trap muscles to keep them from pulling on my shoulders and neck. I highly recommend him and look forward to reviewing him after a few months of training!
Jeremy is incredibly knowledgeable and patient as he gives instructions and goes through the moves. I am currently taking private training sessions from Jeremy and I am learning so much. All you need to do is meet Frank; he is a very special person. My good fortune brought Frank into my life, with his direction, encouragement and understanding of the body, I am on my way. He is a master of knowing what I need and how I need to do it, as we work toward accomplishing my goal of better health. My case is one of a 67year-old person with a handful of health issues. From the moment we began, it was clear that Frank had no doubt we were going to reach that goal. Every workout from beginning to end is designed to address my specific needs, which for me includes stretching and working parts of my body that I thought I would never develop and use again. We also concentrate on resistance training, cardio and (for now) very light weights. My workouts are always fresh and he intensely monitors my every move, from start to finish. Frank is a big advocate of nutrition, how it is vital to incorporate what you put in your body to meet your fitness goals. He has a vast knowledge of this subject and works with me to help incorporate better nutrition into my life. Since we have started I feel healthier, have a decisively positive attitude toward my health and I know that this journey with Frank will take me to a place that I did not think I would ever get back to. It is clear to me that Frank can effectively and successfully train a professional athlete with specific performance goals to the old guy (me) that is looking for a path back to health and all those in between. I have been going to Fitness Together at Rancho Bernardo since March 2016. Working out here has been a great change in my daily life. More energy every day! It has helped me to overcome challenges at work (better focus and quicker thinking) and be in a good mood most of the day :) I love my trainer – Carmelita, she’s awesome and keeps me on my toes (literally!). She would upgrade the difficulty level of exercises frequently making it challenging and it’s a lot of fun! I had never imagined myself wearing boxing gloves ever :) I have also trained with Charlie a few times and he has always got me out of my comfort zone like that exercise ball (phew!). Charlie and Carmelita, both would get my nutrition update from time to time and their suggestions have been a turning point in my weight loss efforts! I had returned to regular exercising last year after a long gap and initially there was a lot of soreness and pain. However, Carmelita has been a great help in recovery through various stretching techniques and resistance training. She would explain the aim for various exercises from time to time and which muscle group is being targeted. I have achieved two personal fitness goals after joining FT in a year. First, my pre-diabetes is in control and on my way to reduce medication dose. Yippee! Secondly, I feel and look great in the outfits which have been in my closet for years :P Very thankful to FT – RB for their continuous support and awesome training! Personal efforts from the trainers are admirable! All trainers look great and are fitness role models in themselves :) Keep up the great work, guys! Cheers!
I used to be in really good shape. Last year I started a new job and fell out of my routine and stopped working out completely. I lost weight in muscle mass and needed to get back in shape. I knew Daryl through a mutual friend and asked her for help to get me motivated. I've been training with her for a few months now and I am so happy! The first trainer I've ever had that I really felt truly tells it like it is. She is extremely good at motivating me to get my workouts done and has an infectious positive outlook on life. I'm well on my way back to where I want to be and feel like I couldn't have done it without her. I'm already seeing some definition return to my arms and legs. It's nice that she makes her schedule super flexible and easy- there are no excuses! I would recommend Daryl to anyone interested in turning their life around or simply reaching a goal that you've been wanting- she will get you there!
