We had a major kitchen remodeling and Jose was great with organizing all the required tools, time, subcontractors and his positive and helpful attitude. We're very happy with the work and our new kitchen and happy to have Jose as our new friend.

I have used Scott Gressitt of San Diego Furniture Repair on several occasions and will continue to do so. His work product is superb. In this day and age finding a Craftsman that is honest, trustworthy, prompt, consistently providing superior workmanship st good value is s rarity. I will continue to use and recommend him to family, friends and other interior designers

We had a leaking dishwasher that apparently had been leaking for some time without our knowledge and caused some water damage. We had him demolish part of our kitchen because the problem was somewhat extensive and put in new cupboards and a kitchen sink, as well as repair some drywall and he did a brilliant job. I will definitely hire Miguel in the future without hesitation. I contacted Thumbtack late Friday afternoon, approx 5-6pm and I saw that I had a response from Miguel by 8.15pm. I replied not expecting a response until the next morning, but instead I had an appt for Miguel to come out and inspect the job the next day and he started work on the following day (Sunday) and completed the job on Monday. Miguel's prices are more than reasonable and I am glad I found him.

Miguel and his co-worker did a fantastic job with the install and design of our new countertops. He was able to meet us at the slab facility where we were then able to see the types of countertops available and also select our kitchen sink/faucet at the same location. Great job! I would highly recommend them.

Don did an excellent job of repairing drawers of very dated cabinetry and making them operate as new. It was a pleasure to work with him since he was knowledgable, responsible, on time, committed to quality work, and had a great sense of humor. I would highly recommend him for repairs but also, having looked at his work with the eye of an interior designer, as a possible contractor for kitchen cabinetry replacement.

John has now completed a number of projects for us including full custom cabinetry for 3 closets, bookcase, entertainment center, coat rack, redwood barn door and redwood desk staircase. John made considerable accommodations to give us exactly what we wanted and provided excellent ideas to improve on what we had imagined.

He did a better than average job and did it in a very timely fashion. The three things that I was disappointed about were, no clean up after job was complete, didn't cover the appliances in kitchen and he still has the key to my property.

Eric and his crew were awesome. Got the windows ordered and in quick, at a reasonable price. I even had a custom window that they graciously took back because it wasn't what I'd imagined it would look like. I only did 4 windows but now i can't wait to get the rest of them done because the new ones look so great!

Mohammad was a pleasure to work with, and his craftsmanship is beautiful. He clearly takes tremendous pride in his work and went out of his way to find the highest quality materials for our custom built-in cabinets and shelving. The project took longer than originally planned, but it was due to his commitment to finding these top-quality materials and some special-order hardware for our custom-size drawers. I'm not complaining about the delay, but thought I should let other potential clients know in case anyone is looking for a super fast turnaround on their project. The trade-off for speed is gorgeous, hand-crafted built-ins made by someone who is honest, hardworking, and take some pride in what he does. We highly recommend Mohammad and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Jose from JP Custom Home Construction is a total pro. Courteous, punctual, and a great value. I scraped a popcorn ceiling in one of my bedrooms; Jose sanded, taped, texturized, painted, ran electric, and installed a ceiling fan/light. Amazing work. I will definitely be using this little company again!

Just Purchased a new home that needed a complete kitchen remodel and a whole house facelift. Alex came and gave us some ideas on how we can remodel the kitchen. He then put everything into a 3d modeling software so we can envision the final product. He helped us coordinate all the trades so that everything would run smoothly. Then he made sure the electrician, plumber, drywall, countertop fabricator, and painter did everything correctly. He made sure the footings were in so the tile guy can get started even before the cabinets were ready. Alex and Allen his project manager made all the cabinets and installed it perfectly. Alex is not just a cabinet maker, he is an artist. If your looking for a custom kitchen remodel give them a call!

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

I will be calling on Matt from now on for any tasks that need a contractor, handyman, or jack-of-all-trades! He is ultra responsive and his rates are extremely reasonable - especially considering the excellent skills he brings to the task and his “let’s get this done” work ethic. Matt is professional, courteous, very conscientious yet flexible: so easy to work with! He responded to my handyman request within minutes of my posting it. We worked out details at that time, he accepted the job and he had everything completeed at my home 36 hours later! While working steadily, quickly and effectively, he still took the time to involve me in “design” or “installation” decisions when there were options - something I really appreciated. He’s a great person; left the work areas clean and tidy and left me feeling I’d found a great resource!

Steve was excellent to work with and very knowledgeable about installing my IKEA sektion cabinets and making it work in my space. Everything came out great and would highly recommended him for kitchen cabinet installs. He added some custom work to the cabinets that made them more sturdy than the way IKEA would have installed.

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

All traits describe Gordon Keiser's work. Over several years we have used him on projects as big as adding a 500 sq.ft. first floor master bedroom and bath to changing kitchen lighting from florescent to LED as well as occasional "handyman" jobs. We can highly recommend him for any project, be it big or small. He not only works well with the homeowners' ideas, but also willingly offers suggestions that might improve the project and is very cooperative in completing the project as ultimately agreed upon.

The Remcon team listened to what we wanted to accomplish with our kitchen remodel, worked with the materials we chose, provided insight on what was going to work for our needs and in our house, kept us informed on the status of the project and the schedule of events happening day-to-day, and were on top of every detail throughout the entire renovation process. We are very happy with our new, gorgeous kitchen and it's exactly as we had hoped it would turn out when we started this process. We would definitely use Remcon again for any future remodeling projects!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
