I took a weekly golf lesson from Bill Westerlund for about two months and greatly enjoyed the experience. Bill is very professional, an excellent teacher, and a wonderful communicator. He greatly helped my golf game, my confidence, and my breathing which helps me relax on the golf course and in other situations such as giving a presentation to the President of a Fortune 100 company. I highly recommend taking golf lessons from Bill - spend some time with him and you will agree this is a terrific experience.

Bret helped me improve my golf game tremendously. Previous to tutoring with Bret I was a complete novice to golf. After a couple of lessons with Bret my golf game improved tremendously. Bret was patient and consultative during the training, and never felt under pressure with Bret. Highly recommend training with him.

Josh is a great golf coach, very encouraging and personable. He does an excellent job of breaking down your golf swing and keeps his advice simple. I have benefitted from focusing on 1-2 key items at a time. Josh recently gave me tips on some drills that I could use to practice putting and the advice was very helpful!

It was about a year ago when I decided I needed something new in my life and considered taking up golf. I have known Christy Erb for a few years, and she had often mentioned to me that I should take golf lessons with her, give it a try, so the decision was made and I started my lessons with Christy and in truth, had no idea what I was in for… Golf, as many know (and remind me) is an unforgiving game – filled with inconsistencies, unpredictable outcomes and requires a physical form that is unlike any other sport, in other words, you can’t simply just walk up to the little white ball and hit it, because that doesn’t work. Not like Frisbee or football, hitting that white ball with a long club can be the most frustrating act and without any means to an end. When I began my lessons with Christy, I slowly started to realize that this was going to be the challenge of a lifetime, yet Christy has been there to guide me, patiently, where her lessons, starting from the more basic moves of the grip to progression of changes in the swing and stance, are conveyed with clarity, good humor and encouragement. I could be having the worst day with my lessons, where nothing is connecting, and Christy will find that one bright spot in an otherwise dark lesson and help me put it back into perspective. Very encouraging, supportive, just what a student needs.

Tim started out by asking me questions about what I think about a golf swing. He got me to articulate some things I had thought about but never put into words and some things I had never thought about. He showed me another lens for looking at what is happening in my swing and why. It was, simply put, about the body following the mind. Tims philosophy on the golf swing is to work on swing mechanics away from the ball with the goal of winding and unwinding the body and allowing natural movement of the club in a pendulum-esk motion. Then when at the ball, there should only be one "swing thought" in the mind and the body should be relaxed so that it can reflexively follow the minds intention; which is set by the swing thought. I found I had two great results after the lesson: 1) it worked such that I was consistently hitting the ball better and could identify what was off when I missed a shot and 2) the feeling of hitting the ball was so much more enjoyable in my mind and body. I intend to continue to go to Tom for instruction and will also have my girlfriend get some beginner lessons from him.

From day 1, Pat has given me great tools and goals to work towards. These are things I can also practice on my own in between lessons. I would definitely recommend him and his classes.

My wife and I are doing a couple's lesson with Gary and we've already been through a couple of months of lessons. So far, things have been beyond expectation. Gary has been extremely accommodative and responsive with scheduling. On the range, he's been very friendly, professional, and most importantly skilled as an instructor. We have a long way to go, but feel we are in the right hands. Thank you Gary, we have been fortunate to find you on thumbtack.

As a non golfer (played many years ago with no lessons) I wanted to get some help with the basics. Searching all over SD luckily found Ruben via Thumbtack. Very responsive and knowledgeable to all my questions. Ruben advised me on what the instructions were to get started. Very straight forward approach. It has been month of lessons about 1 hour 1/2 and I only have positive results to report. No intimidation as novice I have found. Ruben does not let you slide on what your doing wrong his comments are positive, very useful and he knows how to help you correct your putting to driving to understanding the game of golf. I really look forward to the sessions now and only can say to those that want to improve or a wanna be golfer like myself take his class you will not be disappointed. Kudos Ruben your a great teacher who understands how to keep me interested in wanting to play the game of golf.

About

I'm a young aspiring golf professional working on my PGA license. I have a love of spreading the joy of golf. I'm a scratch golfer myself and while I do focus some on technical aspects of the golf swing, I really like to focus on feel and simple swing thoughts. I feel that too many technical thoughts can negatively affect the swing, especially for new or inexperienced players. I love to teach and see improvement in players no matter what age or skill level. Let me help you improve your game, whether it's changing your golf swing or a quick fix.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
