Introduction: Hi there! Welcome to my profile. My name is Juan Carlos, and I'm a pianist and a piano teacher with 20 years of teaching experience working with adults and youth. I teach one-on-one piano lessons and offer you the space to play piano in a non-judgmental and engaging environment. I strive to facilitate a lesson and practice strategies that work specifically for you, based on our mutual observations and discoveries. I assess where you are at and guide you to develop your skills based on what we realize is needed. Beginners learn to read music while developing their body awareness and ear to develop technique and musicality.  For students who are proficient readers, I support them in improving their playing technique to achieve greater ease and precision in their movement as well as the sensibility to play with musicality and artistry. I teach primarily Western classical music, occasionally adding contemporary music to the repertoire if the student desires. I studied music at San Diego State University and, later, at the University of California, Berkeley. While at UC Berkeley, I served as a vocal coach and co-director at the Cal Opera Company. I also received the David and Diana Menn Memorial Prize in the Performing Arts as well as the Mary Nuñes Souza Award, prizes awarded every year for outstanding achievement in the arts. Lastly, I have attended seminars and symposiums at the Golandsky Institute and Alexander Technique, which continuously informs my teaching approach. In addition to my musical background, I hold a master's degree in Counseling Psychology and a professional certification in Gestalt Therapy. I have a broader and deeper understanding of human development, learning styles, and bodymind integration, which helps me attune to more aspects of the student to transmit further paths to musical development and expression.

Very communicative and flexible in setting up lessons, and was a very productive hour long lesson. Helped me better understand how to use my own voice and very patient in helping me from basics to accompanying me with piano.

I have had four lessons with Juan Carlos Zepeda, with sessions divided into voice lessons and music skills (intervals, timing, etc.). Juan Carlos has a way of demystifying how the voice works (head and chest voice, placement, etc.). Each session clears something away and my understanding of the mechanics of it all is increasing. Juan Carlos has a beautiful singing voice, plays piano, and is both very kind and approachable. I highly recommend him.

I am an adult beginning piano student of Juan's. I couldn't be more pleased. Juan always begins a lesson by asking if I have any questions and listening to me play. He then decides what we should work on. The focus is usually on the process of learning a piece. For example, together we figure out fingering that feels best for my hands. Its fun as problem solving. Juan chooses music well suited for his teaching approach. And the music itself is very enjoyable to play.

I'm having a great time learning from Juan. I travel about an hour and a half to him from SF as I wanted an excuse to leave the city once a week. But I'm getting a lot out of the lessons and it's worth the long BART ride and walk. Juan is very knowledgeable about music theory and I appreciate his connecting technique and musicality with something theoretical or historical. I have taken mostly piano lessons but I tried out one voice lesson, which was also great. I would like to try another soon.
