"Kirk is a true professional, and practices with integrity – I made an appointment with Kirk for the deep knots from my traps down to my shoulder blades. After reading his profile, my takeaway was that he is a CMT who has an orthopedic massage approach. He did a verbal assessment before I was on the table, asking about my history of areas of tightness and pain, length and kinds of previous treatments, and any prior injuries. He explained the kinds of massage techniques that he performs and the outcomes I could expect from each of them, to treat my condition, and asked me to choose. I decided on trigger point therapy for the deep knots in my neck and back, instead of a deep tissue treatment that I had planned on getting because the results were longer lasting. [I have had packages of appointments at chiropractor’s offices before where they were standing on my back to create enough pressure, but deeper isn’t always better for lasting results – at least when using a foot.] He used percussion therapy for this trigger point treatment. He located the biggest knots within about 30 seconds, and I wasn’t pointing. The device he used released the knots and immobilized the muscle beneath from spasming. I felt like jello, but there was no pain. I was sore the following day, but still no pain. I felt a lot of relief on the second day, with a larger range of motion in my arms without tightness. He communicated clearly and adapted his style to my muscles responsiveness throughout the appointment. Also worth mentioning is that he doesn’t text during the appointment!!"

"I went to John's house which was a little weird for me, but my worry was unfounded. John was friendly and the message room was similar to those at any spa. He is very professional and definitely can do the deep tissue massage which my achy back needs regularly. I will be a return customer for sure. Thanks John!"

"I got this massage for my wife who is 38 weeks pregnant. Her OB recommended a pregnancy massage to relieve her back pain and sciatica. Jillian was very communicative from the request to her arrival. She even arrived at our home 15 minutes early, for set up and to talk to my wife on what her needs were. After her 90 Minute session, my wife was a different person: able to walk without pain in her back, legs, and overall felt refreshed. It’s been 48 hours since her massage, and she is still feeling great! She mentioned how she only wished she received more during her pregnancy! She wouldn’t hesitate to call upon Jillian again. She really like her technique and was very personable before and after, yet allowed her to relax during the session. We would certainly welcome Jillian back again. Just all around wonderful person, personable, professional, and superior value for the level of service. Thanks Jillian!"

"Paige really knew her stuff! I’ve never had a therapeutic message before and it’s very different from a regular message. I have chronic pain so I’m praying this will really benefit me. I did feel better after she was done. My pain level went from an eight to a four."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic bodywork. In both modalities, a licensed massage therapist uses strokes administered with their hands or forearms to loosen and relax your muscles and other soft tissue. These releases can promote relaxation, pain relief and wellness.

Deep tissue massage may be an excellent therapeutic choice for people with chronic pain or severe tension in their muscles. The deep tissue massage technique moves below the top layer of muscle and soft tissue to release adhesions in your core muscles. In comparison, the strokes used in Swedish massage focus on loosening and relaxing the top layer of your soft tissues. Swedish massage produces relaxation and well-being, but if you have a long-term injury or back pain that won’t seem to go away, deep tissue massage may be a better option for you. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again.
