Raquel was amazing! I have to say that my boyfriend and I were skeptical when we saw that all of her reviews had five stars (I mean how is that a thing), but we are confident saying that the stars are well earned. It is amazing how quickly our puppy has changed, and how easily Raquel taught us the techniques. We had been to other dog trainers before, but Raquel has easily surpassed them. Now we just love taking our puppy for walks and showing off her good behavior. The price did seem a little steep, but in the long term it is much less expensive than other trainers. Raquel doesn't waste any time. She started training from the moment she walked in the door. Not to mention she's very easy to get along with in general. So, if you are having some man's best friend difficulties, do yourself and your pup a favor and get a session with Raquel. Me, Joel, Lola and her new best friend James all thank her!

Maggie is my fourth dog. I have had trainers with each of the dogs. Never have I had a more competent, compassionate and professional trainer as Karen. She taught Maggie to walk loose leash and not enter a room before more or my husband. I used to have to carry her everywhere. She's only 9 pounds but it got old really fast. I also had Karen board/train her for two days. She came back a different dog. When Karen came today for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog. When Karen came for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog, she got so excited when seeing Karen. Karen knows how to be firm yet kind with dogs. Dogs know it. I couldn't recommend anyone more highly than Karen. She is the best of the best. Barry K. Sherman Oaks

John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

Top notch trainer. She got my dog to listen to her in less than 7 minutes, and then went through the motions of teaching him (and me) a variety of commands, effectively. I have met dog trainers before, so my nose developed with time as far as their effectiveness is concerned. Julie impressed me greatly.

Duane is a superb dog whisperer!!! I have worked with other dog trainers before but I have never met someone like Duane. It seems he has an incredible sensibility and ability to read each dog and know how to communicate with them. I just got my Stella, 5 year old English Bulldog, returned home after 5 weeks of board and training by Duane. Stella was very aggressive with other dogs and small children. She had virtually no obedience training whatsoever and never socialized with other dogs. I always had to warn approaching strangers, especially if they had a dog, that Stella was "not so friendly". Then a 8 week old chocolate Lab puppy came into our life and turned our home life upside down. Stella was very jealous and aggressive towards the puppy. My poor puppy was scared to death and something had to be done. Duane took Stella and trained her in his home for four weeks and the fifth week, I sent Henry to Duane for a week to be with Stella so that they could get acquainted and may be bonded. Frankly, I wasn't too sure whether Stella could change. I had a back up plan for the puppy in case the board and training with Duane did not work out. I am so happy that Stella and Henry are back home and they get along so beautifully, thanks to Duane!! It is so wonderful to have two dogs in the house without any tension. Duane is very professional, honest and very easy to work with. He answered all my questions, my numerous phone calls were never ignored, and I felt at ease about the whole process. It is clear to me that Duane loves and cares deeply about the dogs he trains and dogs love him back. Duane followed up with the second visit to our home today, and both Stella and Henry were so happy to see him. Stella actually wanted to follow Duane out as if she wanted to go with him. I have never seen Stella act like this with anyone outside her own family. We are so pleased and happy that we found Duane and can not recommend him highly enough. He is the real Dog Whisperer! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Duane!!!

Melissa is an EXCELLENT dog trainer! We have two small dogs who were pulling on leashes, had leash aggression, and who barked quite often. All of those things are past tense now. Her methods are gentle but effective, and more advanced than the "click and treat" that at a certain point stops working (especially with the barking). We are so grateful that we hired her and have already recommended her to some of our friends. Her pricing was also excellent! Hire her, your home will be much more peaceful!

We needed help with our 4 month old English bulldog. She came in the same day we made contact and gave us great tips and pointers from food, vets, and training. She was really patient, kind and professional. She knew what she was talking about and is perfect if you are looking for a local dog trainer. Thus far we have met just once but I highly recommend her and we plan on having her back to our home for additional training.

The training was amazing and better than we could have hoped. She did more for our dog than we or any other trainer has done before. She set us on the best path to help our dog become confident and not so nervous and scared. We’ve already seen improvements and look forward to seeing her get more comfortable with strangers and being outdoors. We plan on working with her more in the future. I would highly recommend her!!!

My dog is very aggressive towards other dogs. It gotten to the point that I couldn’t take her hiking with me anymore because of the glares and mean comments I got from other people. I also got anxiety just taking her on a walk around my neighborhood. Once we started working with Epic Dog Pros we have been able to go out in public without any complaints.

I had a consultation with Dave. My fur babies took to him as soon as he walked in. He was very calm and professional and very honest. He didn’t come in with a pitch of why he would be the best trainer, we just had a conversation and it felt very natural and comfortable. After hearing my concerns, he told me what he thought the problem was and how we can try to fix it. I am confident that he is the best trainer for my dogs and I will start training with him very soon.

We have had two other dog trainers come out previously, and we could not solve these issues with our dog. Our dog has a "herding" behavior and kind of scolds my other dog when he is in trouble and tries to stop me also if I scold my other dog. There are other issues as well that no one had been able to help me with. We called Julie a few weeks ago and she has been out a few times. She is wonderful. She is caring and loving towards the dogs. She is working with our dogs with a different approach then we had before. She has us working with different types of collars. She does not charge by the hour, just a flat fee. She has been here sometimes about 3 hours working with us. I had to call her one day with a question and she always calls back promptly. She is always there for support also. I am seeing a lot of progress with our dog in the different way Julie has taught us to work with him better. I would highly recommend her.

Denise loves dogs and understands them deeply. She also loves people. Denise is patient, kind, generous, and elegant. She tailors her instruction to suit the individuality of the dog, his or her guardian, and the bond between them. Denise taught me ways of working with Carl that were fun for him and comfortable for me, and the results have been extraordinary. I believe that one day Denise Mange will be ranked with Turid Rugass, Patricia McConnell, and Ian Dunbar as one of the greatest dog trainers in the world.

Before Karin, I had a dog and human aggressive German Shepherd Husky mix. Layla would react to every single dog that we saw when we were on walks which made it very difficult to walk her. As for people, when someone got to close she'd snap and lunge at them. We did a 3 week board and train program with Karin and was probably the best decision I made. We had gone through a couple of trainers and finally found the right one. Layla now walks and ignores any dog we pass and people can come up to us and talk without her reacting. Not only does Karin help you with your dog but she also explains what you, as the handler, need to work on. Even after the board and train, advance group class is available to continue working with your dog around a controlled environment. Needless to say, we're happy we found her. Definitely a well knowledge and amazing trainer.

If you are looking for a reliable, professional dog trainer that gets you results, Ayumi is hands down the best in the business. Our little fur monster, Rollie, had social behavior issues when we first adopted him. After being recommended by a friend, we decided to put Rollie through Ayumi's program. I really wished I would've found Ayumi earlier. We discovered a whole new side of Rollie we had never seen before. The transformation is truly incredible. Thank you, Ayumi!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
