Irina is professional, trustworthy and responsible. I would recommend her to anyone who has difficulties in business and immigration area. Irina handled my H1B case easily. It was a bit pricy ($3k flat fee + 1k for short time for preparation) - but very well done. Thanks, Irina!

It is difficult to convey the gratitude my husband and I have for Peter's capability, professionalism, personal care and attention to working with us, and his integrity: additionally once he reviews your request for representation he presents his fees upfront, those fees are consistent and do not alter (unlike some attorneys who always trying to exact extra fees). Furthermore Peter flew down to our city of residence to personally accompany us to our interview at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which in itself was extraordinarily comforting. My husband and I recommend Peter Duong without reservation.

“If you’re like me, picking an attorney to handle your DUI case is difficult. I had no past experiences with attorneys let alone DUIs nor did any of my close friends or family. Therefore all I could do was read reviews, speak directly with a few options, and compare rates. That said, I clearly made the right choice for a few reasons. I submitted to a blood test which came back with a BAC of 1.1. I got pulled over in San Mateo County on 101 by CHP which as I understand is not the most sympathetic county to DUI offenders. Long story short, Aaron got it down to a wet reckless which was huge based on the difference in penalties. He also won the DMV hearing. Throughout the process he was accessible, knowledgeable and honest about my options, prospects, and best courses of action. He is clearly very experienced with handling DUIs which is very important to confirm with any attorney you decide to choose. He also handled my case personally which is not always the case with other DUI attorneys who as I understand will take your money and then delegate your case to a less experienced associate. And to top it off, his rates are extremely reasonable and competitive based on the rates quoted to me by other attorneys. At the very least I would give him a call and talk about your case. He spent a fair amount of time with me over the phone free of charge and explained to me what I could expect as well as what he brings to the table as a DUI attorney. All in all it was as good of an experience as one can expect when faced with what is a pretty stressful and unfortunate situation.”

Just started the process but so far so good. We had scheduled an appt for a consultation at 12:45. He called me exactly at 12:45, he started the process right away and seems very organize and on top of things, which is what I was looking for. I tried to schedule other appointments with other lawyers and they called me back like 6 hours after I tried. I’m very sure that’s hes gonna do whatever it takes.

David got the job done at a very reasonable price. I wish I had started with him earlier since getting through the court system is not so easy and using a lawyer for an uncontested divorce is not necessary.

Ms. Polk assisted me with my divorce case. I cannot recommend her enough. I was impressed with Ms. Polk's courtroom skills and her ability to hold her own against a much more experienced, aggressive attorney. Her fees were reasonable and her office manager was very good about keeping me updated regarding my bill and how much I had on retainer. Hopefully, I never have to go through this experience again but if I do, I will not hesitate to retain Ms. Polk and her staff.

Mr Larson Helped me with a very difficult legal situation I was in. His expertise was excellent and he knew how to maneuver around the legal system. He is a Stan up Lawyer. He also does not nickel and dime you to death on his fees. Many Lawyers charge for every conversation and text and email. John Did not. He was thorough, professional and kept me on course. John is Busy but he stayed on top of my case. I recommend John Highly.

I needed an attorney for a DUI. Michael charged me a reasonable rate and provided more than legal representation. He was genuinely concerned with my well being and offered valuable advice on my life situation. The court results were better than expected and his honest care that I got help was sincerely moving. I owe Michael much more than thanks for a job well done in the courtroom but gratitude for helping me improve my life.

If there were 1/2 stars I would have given a 4.5. Tim is deceptively good! He is proactive and leverages his people and negotiating skills for favorable results. If you are looking for results oriented counsel he is solid. His delivery and interaction is quirky but he drives to resolution.

Daniel has a wealth of knowledge and is totally transparent. I came to him with some real concerns about starting my company. He was able to navigate me through every aspect. He was also fair in his advice, and let me know what services he could offer, and which items I could tackle myself should I chose to. He explained aspects of the trademark process I was not able to gather from other legal resources. I trust that he will be a great resource.

Attorneys can be a nightmare! Overcharging, non-responsive, and difficult to work with might be some words used to describe attorneys you have worked with before. But NOT Tanya! A literal diamond in the rough for the legal field, she’s simply amazing to work with! Being our company’s retained Intellectual Property attorney, she has quickly and effectively handled absolutely everything we’ve needed and more! Coming from one of “those” attorneys I described, she was truly a breath of fresh air and has become a critical member of our legal team. I would highly recommend Tanya without any reservation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

  • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
  • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
  • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
  • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
  • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
  • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.
