I had a dripping bathroom faucet and and a worn out kitchen faucet. He gave me all of the options with fixing/replacement and gave me the labor costs up front. He did quick washer replacement on the bathroom sink which made it good and then went to work on the kitchen faucet which was a tough job, especially with the garbage disposal, but be did it with a smile!

Ricardo is awesome! He responded to my proposal to install our bathroom fan really fast, and then responded to my text to schedule super fast, too. He was here on time, and he texted me right before to let me know he was on his way. The installation wasn't straightforward - my husband tried to do it, but we seemed to be missing a wire to connect the fan part. Ricardo figured it out really quickly and was able to get things up and running super fast. I would definitely hire Ricardo again!

After being given the run around from our home builder and the water heater company, Aqua Stat cane in and fixed the issue in 40 minutes. Another plumber had given his opinion on what was needed, but didn't want the job, after telling me the water heater needed 4 major parts, Oscar came in cleaned the burner and the thermo coupler with a wire brush, didn't put in any new parts and the water heater worked. It's great to know there are some contractors left that have the customers well being at heart. After 4 days of not having hot water, it was a relief to finally get someone who was willing to make it happen. Can't thank you enough Oscar :-)

Matthew Kelly is hardworking and honest. He strives to make the job go as well as possible. After other contractors said no or did not return my calls, he responded quickly on the weekend, and he completed the job in a timely manner. Matthew's operation is lean and responsive. He is pleasant to work with and has my recommendation.

Jasper was on time, responsive, and did an incredibly high quality paint job on our cabinets and even helped us install new handles, knobs, and hinges in a short amount of time. Our kitchen and bathrooms now have a great new 21st century look (updated from its original 80's look and feel). The quote we were given was extremely fair. For the overall experience of this job - the only word that can be used here is indeed 'outstanding'.

We had Bogdan do a bathroom renovation in our old house, which was full of little unplanned difficulties. He worked long hours, putting in lots of extra touches to make things pull together. He was always noticing details we never would have and thinking ahead to create the best options. He is a kind person and very professional. He clearly cares about his work. He also had a good network of folks to help out when he needed it. The job took longer and was more complicated than I expected and when I tally all the hours of work he put in, it was a very fair price. It is rare to find someone who cares about doing an excellent job even beyond what the customer expects. Bogdan is your man.

From the minute Richard opened my front door and told me he needed to take his shoes off or else he would track water and mud into my house, I knew we were going to get along great. He was close to prefect in managing a number of jobs I had on my list - some work in my bathroom, hanging pictures in my living room and my gallery wall in my dining room. Nice, professional, polite, effecient and respectful of my home. Would hire him again in a minute and will.

It went very. Ricky and his crew were very nice and trustworthy. Gave him a key to my house since I was unable to be home during the times they would be working my bathroom. He was fair with his pricing and so nice. I have had 2 contractors work on place before and they had such bad attitudes. I will definitely use Ricky again and recommend to friends. Also loved how respectful they were of my Home and keeping it clean as much as possible while working.

Work performed was for installation of bathroom exhaust vent and OTR microwave with exhaust vent. Written estimate was provided days prior and all necessary installation materials were purchased by him as agreed. Mess was kept at minimum by covering immediate work areas but I still had a lot of cleaning afterwards due to the spread of sawdust (windows were left open). Contractor and his helper completed the job in the time promised. Unfortunately, the microwave vent did not function as needed (not venting air to outside as expected). Contractor was notified and he returned in the same week to rework the vent. He was apologetic and showed good effort in diagnosing and fixing the problem though a little guesswork had to be done by both of us since we didn't have the installation manual. The outcome for both vents was acceptable though my perfectionism says otherwise. LOL. Overall, he was polite and showed professionalism throughout the entire process. He was patient and timely in responding to all our concerns. He was able to acquiesce to our preference in materials/appliances and allowed us options regarding the installation. We felt like he valued our input and we had control over the process especially since this was our first time dealing with a general contractor.

I hired Scorpion Services to replace my roof. The roof was well over 30 years old. Carlos and Neema came to my house and were never pushy, and really knew what they were talking about. Unlike other contractors I had place bids, Carlos informed me about about the process and gave me a number of options that worked within my budget. They did such a great job on my roof, over the next 6 months I have hired them to redo my deck, repair siding that has dry rot, and replace my gutters. I would not hestitate to recommend them to every friend and family member I have. Some of the most honest and hard working people I have ever hired!!

I ended up interviewing 10 different contractors for our exterior siding job because there were so many different opinions on what needed to be done and how best to do it. I'm so glad that we ended up going with Kris and his team. Great communication throughout, incredibly high quality of workmanship on a very difficult job (it is an older house that hasn't been maintained very well before we bought it). I really appreciated Kris' attention to detail and letting us know what was going on throughout the 6 week long process. Also did a great job working with the county inspector, which is never an easy process. These guys are pros - won't hesitate to hire them again for our next house project!

I hired them to lay the engineered bamboo floor in my condo. They did exactly what promised and in the time they originally specified. I have been doing remidelling and construction of my rentals and my resident for the last 10 years and very much familiar with the business. Out if many contractors or handymen i met Jason and Regina are the outstanding team. They work fast, they are very proactive and attentive to details. And their price was reasonable. What is the most important for me is that they do listen to my suggestions - not like many macho style contractors:). The floor work looks absolutely great and i am very happy. So that i would like to hire them for other work on my rental property.

We hired MJH Construction Management to complete renovations of our recently purchased home. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, MJH determined the best solutions to a number of complex repairs and additions including floor leveling, heating, plumbing and electric. MJH helped us choose several improvements like changing the floor plan for better use of space, installing a gas fireplace as well as a bathroom and kitchen upgrade. MJH oversaw the contractors to ensure the work was completed and billed correctly. Throughout the process MJH kept us apprised of the costs and schedule - there were no surprises. We are delighted with the results - our renovated house came out fantastic.

I contacted Chuck for my mom, she doesn't go online, and she was very pleased with the outcome. I don't know what she paid for the work, otherwise I may have clicked "value" as well. I think she said it was similar to some other quotes she had gotten. What was not similar though, and what my mom was very happy about was the responsiveness, follow through, and results that she received from Chuck and his crew. Months ago, my mom had 2 or 3 estimates given to her but for some reason or another those contractors did not follow through. Chuck was very responsive with call backs and an estimate, and began the project quickly thereafter. His crew was always prompt, continuously working, and each day's clean up at the end was perfect - they very considerate how they left the area. One thing that may be good to mention for those reading this and looking for a contractor, is that my mother and I felt comfortable and safe with them in the house at times we had to leave for work. My mother is older and I am very cautious and skeptical of people in general, but we both quickly noticed that Chuck and each of his crew that showed up were straight forward, easy going and courteous at all times, so they were easy to be around. As for the bathroom remodel, my mom loves it! Even when there was a snag for a second they helped my mom through it and got her to the new bathroom she's been wanting for years--- thanks Chuck! I was able to schedule estimates with 5 contractors for my bathroom remodel. Each definitely had their own approach with a few being extremely pushy trying to talk me into doing work I didn't want to do! I believe Green line was the 3rd appointment I had and Manuel Sr & his son Manuel Jr definitely stood out to my family and I. They listened to what we wanted, gave me a few options and honest recommendations (which actually involved less total work = less money). I really appreciated the honest no pressure approach. It was also very clear to me that they had a lot of experience because they were able to point out a few things that no other contractor brought to my attention. Service: I'd say the entire process was pretty seamless, Jr or Sr were always available through call or text, no issues with cleanliness or picking up materials. They use a progress payment system so we paid them as they completed certain phases of work which I really liked. They were able to recommend retailers for the finish materials which was very helpful. Work Quality: Craftsmanship excellent, tiles were set beautifully and look stunning. About half way through we decided to go with their recommendation of doing level 5 texture through the vanity area into the bathroom (which they gave a VERY good price for), this was a great suggestion as it really helps in bringing a cleaner modern look. Paint, vanity and fixture installation were all done very nicely. Over all very satisfied, we will be calling Green Line back to do the guest bath in a few months. Price: They were not the cheapest estimate I received. I decided to hire them because they felt trustworthy. Which is a hard thing to achieve after one meeting. However I am EXTREMELY pleased with the price I paid for the finished product. They explained to me in out initial meeting that this type of finish work requires a certain amount of money to do properly which I completely understand now. They were also not the most expensive which is surprising for the transformation they accomplished. Thanks guys! -Christina

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
