"I hired Pastor John to be the minister for a wedding I was coordinating. He did an excellent job! He was very easy to work with and had a heartwarming ceremony for the couple. He made the ceremony personalized which was more meaningful to the couple. Thank you Rev. John!!"

"After receiving Ben's quote, I called to tell him I had an unusual request. I explained that I wanted to play a little prank on my Groom. This would require a well rehearsed plan from me and the groomsmen. Ben loved the idea and agreed to help out! Ben sent me a few documents requesting names of all persons that are part of the wedding, etc. About a week before the wedding I got really nervous and contacted Ben about my prank. We went over the details one final time. The day of the ceremony, Ben arrived early and rounded up the Best man and the Maid of honor to sign the certificate. Ben began the ceremony and when giving a little history about us, I abruptly interrupted and asked him to stop a minute. I played my prank, which was giving my Groom a ball hat in his favorite team. I then told Ben to continue. When it came time to recite vows, I was ready with mine but I had scared the Groom so bad that he couldn't even speak! Ben was able to help him from the embarrassment by just using the standard. The best part of asking Ben to officiate was the beautiful folder he put together and presented to us. It was the entire ceremony customized to include our parents, wedding party, and the poem I asked him to use. It was an extremely thoughtful gift! Thank you Ben for making our ceremony lighthearted and fun."

"I was putting together my wedding from out of town so you can imagine how much confidence I had to have in my choice for an officiant. I can honestly tell you my husband and I couldn't have been more happy with choosing Phil. Phil was extremely responsive to my email correspondence, worked with us on the type of ceremony we wanted to have and even gave us a choice on what he should wear. We were able to meet with him the day before the ceremony to discuss the ceremony more in-depth and even talked about music -- which he played guitar and sang at our ceremony. I can assure you if you choose Phil to be your officiant, you will not be disappointed. He is awesome!"

"From the beginning, Dr. Taylor demonstrated the desire to work with my partner (now husband) and I in the manner that best fit our style. She maintained clear communication throughout the process, she was very patient while we figured out the logistics, and she also provided suggestions as needed. She made our ceremony very special by meeting us at our desired location with an optimistic demeanor, and helped quell those pre-wedding jitters by smiling and nodding during the ceremony. Thank you for making our day so special!!!"

"I met Reverend Gwen when she performed bilingual officiant services at a friend's wedding, and immediately knew that I wanted her to do the same at my then-fiancé and I's wedding soon after. Highly personable, fun, efficient, the positive words to describe her are endless. She was able to capture the very essence of what we wanted said in our vows, and made sure that those people that we needed/wanted to be a part of our ceremony were included. She also has a way of putting people at ease whether as rehearsal, via email, in preparation, or simply calming the nerves of my fiancé as he awaited my arrival down the aisle! We shared laughs, tears, and most importantly, love. I can wholeheartedly and in good faith say that Reverend Gwen does this out of pure love and faith, not as a side gig. If you are looking for someone not only whose heart and soul is truly in it, but also who can make you feel comfortable and like you are a dear friend/family member from your first meeting, consider Reverend Gwen your person. I will always recommend her to any one of my family members/friends!"

"My experience with John was very helpful and insightful. I had many questions and concerns with what direction I want to take my life and John was able to help me come to definitive conclusions through a series of exercises. He did so in a very polite, professional and non-judgemental manner. After his consultation I knew with certainty what I wanted and needed to do. I appreciate the assistance he provided me and would recommend him to anyone."

"Christopher was an amazing officant, i was first skeptical about booking someone through a website but my experience was easy, smooth and wonderful. He was so helpful with my vows, gave me some great tips and by using his advice i feel i created the most perfect vows. He was so attentive and so creative, really made the ceremony script about us two and felt so unique. For everyone getting married in the near future, i definitely reccomend Christopher. Even doing a first meeting or phone call you’ll be able to see how nice and amazing he is. Thank you Christopher for everything! Best Regards Selena & Enrique"

"I could not be more pleased with the level of service provided by Divine Order Ministry. From our first point of contact via phone, I could tell that Officiant Darrel Ross was a genuine soul who truly loves what he does. He took the time to communicate with me and my fiancé over the course of several months as we prepared for our wedding day. He also took the time to get to know our love story in detail and to get a feel for who we are individually. More importantly he was able to take that and craft a beautiful, personalized ceremony (and per our request, with a spiritual/ religious touch) that truly touched the hearts of us and all of our guests. It’s been one month later and guests are still telling us how beautiful and moving the ceremony was. If you are looking for an officiant who can give a truly special and personalized ceremony, I say look no further!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
