He came by on Thursday night and he gave a reasonable quote. We the agreed upon the time. Saturday morning at 8:30 the crew showed up and took care of the jobs like professionals. They cleaned up after themselves and were in and out in less than 2 hours. Which is pretty quick considering they trimmed 2 fruit trees that have never been maintained by the previous owners. GREAT job and I would recommend them to anyone. I even set a up a tentative appointment for stump removal.

what a wonderful experience. Not many business owners go out of their way to make sure the customer knows they are valued. Steve responded to our job and within a couple hours was in our backyard looking at the project which was taking out a thick load full of previously placed cement. With our busy schedules he was able to meet face to face with us the night before the project started and had great ideas for out back yard. We decided on moving forward with the project and by the next morning Steve and his team were tackling that removal. Checking in with me and my husband constantly was a plus. When the backyard was cleared out he made sure to show me what was done and what the next steps for our project world be. Moving foward I will hire Steve again. He's local, a veteran and such a hard worker. Thank you and your team for taking this project on.

Courteous, knowledgeable, professional. Concerned with tree health (not just hacking off excess). Manny spent a great deal of time on his initial visit, going over what needed to be done, answering all of my questions and making suggestions. I knew I had a lot to get done when I started (several trees and shrubs trimmed and also shrub removal), and had included in the job another two very overgrown trees at my daughter's house a couple of miles away. I believe it was 8 trees and a few shrubs in all. I also had a tree "righted" that had begun to grow almost horizontally to get sun. All was done to my satisfaction and then some. Clean up was complete, and extras (like recovering my car, which i had moved for work, cutting up some firewood sized pieces for me) were happily thrown in. Manny cares about the job he does. It shows, and neighbors on both side of me used his services afterward. I will use Manny for additional projects and recommend him to anyone who asks.

I originally reached out to David for tree maintenance and subsequently have hired him for a few garden projects and also bi-weekly regular maintenance. He has helped me with tree removal, digging up my old garden beds, replanting new beds and repairing my sprinkler system. He is knowledgeable and punctual and I would definitely recommend him for anything you need for your yard and garden.

We are very happy with the work that Vera's tree trimming did removing two trees. Both trees were in awkward locations (close to walls/corner) but this caused no issue. The trees and stumps were removed and we were delighted at how clean our garden was left after the removal.

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
