We hired George to completely landscape our front yard, back yard, including digging out all the grass flowers and weeds, landscaping the front yard into decomposite granite (DG) with stepping stones, replace the concrete driveway, and install concrete and pavers in the backyard. His and his crew worked diligently, and his price was competitive. Also, he built cement blocks and pavers for our new mailbox, and driveway solar lights for the front yard. Our driveway now looks really great and attract attention to passerby. Thank you George!

David was awesome! My backyard landscaping with patio got off to a really bad start. The guys I had hired did a terrible job and the next guy I hired to finish it never showed up. I was trying to get it done before my daughter's birthday party and was quite distraught about the situation. David gave me a good quote and stayed ahead of schedule. His guys worked hard and were never standing around wasting time. He got the job done and would recommend him (and hire him) in the future.

Sione began immediately after we called him and always came early to begin work. He met and spoke with us everyday before he began work and as he wrapped up for the day and walked us through every step of the way. He catered to our precise instructions and was able to complete the job to our satisfaction! He pulled up, widened, and repaved our entire driveway and made the house look beautiful. Thank you Sione!

Jordan and the rest of the crew from Boyes and Son did such an amazing job on my driveway extension project. I greatly appreciate their hard work and attention to detail. Jordan showed up everyday and walked me through what was going on and what would be done that day. Sure enough when I got home later that day the work would be done just like he said said it would. The whole project was completed well before the deadline. Now I have a beautiful driveway that my neighbors have said looks great. I will certainly be calling Jordan and crew again for future projects. Thank you!

Robert and his team did great work. I hired them to reasphalt a driveway alley and slurry seal the length of the alley. They gave me an honest price that did not increase upon arrival. There were no surprises. The team was courteous and were conscious of the noise in the neighborhood (they targeted 9am starts). They even striped me a basketball key. I'd recommend Avengers Asphalt to anyone and would hire them again.

MGB did great work and I got a smoking hot deal on the price. I dealt with Eric, he did most of the work himself tore out the old asphalt driveway smoothed out the dirt graded everything and got it all ready for concrete. The only problem we had was the people from the city told me my main water line was at least two feet underground, of course it was only 3inches under the dirt so as Eric was grading he hit the water line, The only complaint I have is MGB has it in the contract if they hit or damage any utility's they are not responsible.I understand but I think that is bad business practices and it would have been nice to at least had some help fixing it and not to have been repairing a water line I did not break at 10:30 at night. Moving on, we had the driveway widened and the guys did a great job. I would recommend MGB to anyone for a Job like this. Just make sure you know where all of your utility's are.

My wife and I have used California Jungle twice. The first time was to help sell our home, where Chris Degroote upgraded our "tired looking yard" to create new modern look that improved the curb appeal and value of our home. We sold the home for full price quickly, and received many positive first impression comments about the landscaping from buyers. Next, California Jungle did a large renovation of the next home we purchased. This included front, side and back yards with a mid-century modern theme. Chris and team built a barbecue, courtyard, and decorative, retaining walls. They upgraded the deck, added planters, and opened up our ocean views. This project took several months. Chris did a good job planning, managing a crew, and discussing many design options. We highly recommend California Jungle to improve the look and value of your home.

Our experience with George Company was 5-star from his quick response to the initial inquiry, to the follow-up phone call to see if we had made a decision through the completion of the job. His attention to detail was amazing and communication was thorough. The day the driveway was completed he adjusted his initial recommendation that it would be dry by 5:00 to advising us to let it dry overnight since it was a very high humidity day . He even helped me get the groceries inside since they had completed the work sooner than expected and there was no way for me to safely get to the door. Overall, I would highly recommend this company to do any job related to upgrading your home; you will not be disappointed!!!

Pacific Concrete did an amazing job on the entry way of my home. It was professional done and match perfectly my existing stucco. The work was also done with consideration for the floor tile ...they covered with plastic. They were always on time and kept in touch with me as to their arrival and progress. I highly recommend them ad I am looking forward to them returning soon to do a new driveway. Cathy in Dana Point, Ca

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
