We've been working with Lisa-Beth for several months now. She is tutoring my 13 year old daughter in writing and it has been a stellar experience. Lisa-Beth is professional, communicative, thoughtful and inspirational in her approach. She gives real value to my daughter and has expanded her view of writing as a medium of expression. Thanks Lisa-Beth!

Carl was referred to us by a very happy, satisfied student. He has been tutoring my Junior daughter in Algebra 2. She has always been challenged in Math and saves all homework till last. Carl has been a "spark" in getting her to not "hate" it so much. He comes prepared, energetic and dedicated to gaining a clear understanding of the topic, while interjecting humor into this very dry subject. Carl has been instrumental in my daughters improved Algebra 2 grade! Hurray!

I feel compelled to share a great "find" we made last year. School had only been in session for two weeks before my kids came home lamenting that their AP Physics teacher left them totally confused and stressed out. Switching to a less demanding schedule wasn't an option so I decided to look for some help. Lord knows, it wasn't going to come from me or my husband! I found Daniel, a 2012 UCLA engineering grad who has been tutoring for many years. After the boys' first meeting with him, the level of stress in our household plummeted and the boys did well on their first physics test. We've decided to have him come regularly, just to make sure the boys understand the material and keep them confident. The boys ended up with A's in the class and doing well on the AP test. Daniel was able to help them with anything they didn't get in their calculus class as well. So as you stare the next school year in the face, if your child has any difficulty with their studies, especially in math or physics, consider talking to Daniel. He's a lovely young man and the boys really responded to him well.

Called Daniel to help me at the last minute get ready for a statistics test. He met me the next morning and really helped me understand some concepts I was struggling with, especially word problems and figuring out which equations should be used. He was great to work with and really knows his stuff! Highly recommend him for math tutoring!!

We highly recommend Lois For tutoring. She is well known in Honolulu and has years of experience. She tutored our granddaughter when she needed to take the entrance exams into private schools. Lois has great knowledge of children and skill in getting them to do their work. Her lessons were challenging and fun. Our grandaughter could hardly wait to return to her next session. We wish Lois was here to tutor our grandaughter in her college SATS. Carol Lehman

I am a professor of mathematics and the supervisor of the Math Tutoring Lab at Los Angeles Valley College. Reza is one of the best tutors I have met on any campus I have taught at including University of Utah, Cal State Los Angeles, and numerous community colleges. Reza has tutored at LA Valley College for the past 9 years. Overall he has tutored for 18 years. He is commonly the tutor I hear praised most often by my students. They tell me that not only is his mathematics excellent but he is very clear in his explanation and very supportive with his attitude. He makes my students want to do more math because he makes it very comprehensible for them. Reza tutors Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus and Statistics. He is the standard I hold up my other tutors to. He shows up on time, teaches very intuitively and my students walk away from each session with him feeling better about themselves. As a person, I find Reza to be a wonderful role model who volunteers many hours each week at the tutoring lab, teaching math to many students on campus.

She's wonderful! I haven't needed Math tutoring for any of my previous degrees (I have a B.A., Ed.M, and Ed.D), I'm an educator by training, and I have taught math before. So I wasn't sure what to expect, all I knew was I needed help brushing up on my math in anticipation of the new MBA program I'm going to be starting in the Fall. Finding the right tutor is critical so I interviewed/worked with a number of them before I finally decided to go with her. She was an excellent tutor. I felt like I learned a lot in our very first session and her approach to the material made it easy for me to understand. I understand that there have been some comments about language - I don't think that is an issue. She knows her stuff and if you listen to what she says your math will definitely improve. As a math teacher, educator, and now student I fully endorse her.

Jenny is tutoring my son in math and biology. My son attends a college prep high school. She has been very flexible with the schedule and really wants him to "understand" the material. Although it has only been two sessions thus far my child is excited to learn and he understands the material. She arrives on time , confirms the day of and is very professional. So far we are happy with her service.

Adele, is a fun loving, intelligent, kind, and just all-around great tutor. We call it an Italian play date when she comes over to teach my son. He learns through play being that he’s four years old and she adapts to what he’s interested in. He loves having her come. And we enjoy her as well. We see the benefits in him as hes starting to think and speak in Italian where previously he had not. This is very exciting to see the benefits of the weekly tutoring. I would recommend Adele as a language tutor to anyone.

Amy has been tutoring my 10th grade son in Geometry for a year. Amy is not only a lovely person, but is a fantastic teacher and tutor. She goes above and beyond in her commitment to her students, putting so much time and care into her weekly lessons. Her talent for teaching was apparent from the first session and her ease with teenagers is absolutely amazing. She is a no-nonsense tutor and can get my distracted son straight to work, but she also has a great sense of humor which makes the time more relaxed and enjoyable for him. When I hear them laughing during the sessions, it warms my heart. My son told me that Amy explains the problems better than his teacher and he actually understands the material when she goes over it with him. He is enrolled in Algebra 2 in the Fall and I am definitely hiring Amy for the summer to get a head-start on the school year!!

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

I had a tutoring session in Algebra with Christine today, she was very patient with me. I have a hard time with Algebra, and she understood that and didn't get annoyed at having to repeat formulas to me:) Honestly I wish I would've met her at the beginning of my Elem. Algebra class. She shows you different ways of doing the problem, giving you an example of her own to make sure you've fully grasped the material. I highly recommend her, and will definitely be tutoring with her again. Thanks Christine!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
