Scott was great to work with, he gave me suggestions that helped me to decide just what I wanted done. Scott is a hands on contractor and did most of the work himself. He drove to a previous job site so I could visually see what I was getting. I decided on a diamond pattern with broom brush in in different directions and a boarder around the edge of the driveway. The effect was assume, by using this pattern it gave the driveway the look of using different shades of concrete(no color was used). this is by far the best looking driveway in the neighborhood. his workmanship added many more dollars in value to my home. thank-you Scott. Dan Ross a happy home owner.

We hired George to completely landscape our front yard, back yard, including digging out all the grass flowers and weeds, landscaping the front yard into decomposite granite (DG) with stepping stones, replace the concrete driveway, and install concrete and pavers in the backyard. His and his crew worked diligently, and his price was competitive. Also, he built cement blocks and pavers for our new mailbox, and driveway solar lights for the front yard. Our driveway now looks really great and attract attention to passerby. Thank you George!

Sione began immediately after we called him and always came early to begin work. He met and spoke with us everyday before he began work and as he wrapped up for the day and walked us through every step of the way. He catered to our precise instructions and was able to complete the job to our satisfaction! He pulled up, widened, and repaved our entire driveway and made the house look beautiful. Thank you Sione!

Over the past 10 years Eduardo Hernandez has done many landscaping projects for me, including sod and sprinkler installation, artificial turf, replacing asphalt driveway with a cement drive, cobblestone walkway, flagstone in patio, and tree trimming and removal. With these major projects out of the way, he regularly maintains the front lawn and is always willing to make time if other work becomes necessary. Eduardo is knowledgeable, personable and hardworking and I have been very pleased with all of his work.

Did a great job on my small 400 s ft backyard. I wanted concrete to be able to put my patio set, but he guided me to pavers as a cheaper option. Must say it looks good! Also a mini pathway with paver and stones. Was within my budget and looks good.

I wanted to take out all the old concrete and pave everything with pavers. I contacted a few pavers companies, GoPavers, Titan Pavers, System Pavers and a few others. I am so glad I went with MB Paving. They did a fantastic job with 2000 sq ft of paving and about 70 linear ft of planters wall. They also help me fix other stuff that was left unfinished or substandard by other contractors. For example, my gate door was sagging and they helped me fixed that. The job cost is competitive with the other paving companies. They ran future landscaping light conduits and water pipes in the event that I would need them in the future. Keep in mind that I never asked them to run water pipes, they just did it. Best of all, these guys showed up early every day and leave at 4 PM like clockwork. The work also involved demoing old garage concrete slab and the driveway approach; the concrete they poured and worked on turned out fantastic. I am even afraid to step on them because I fear I would stain them. Overall, I am super happy with this company!!!!!

My wife and I have used California Jungle twice. The first time was to help sell our home, where Chris Degroote upgraded our "tired looking yard" to create new modern look that improved the curb appeal and value of our home. We sold the home for full price quickly, and received many positive first impression comments about the landscaping from buyers. Next, California Jungle did a large renovation of the next home we purchased. This included front, side and back yards with a mid-century modern theme. Chris and team built a barbecue, courtyard, and decorative, retaining walls. They upgraded the deck, added planters, and opened up our ocean views. This project took several months. Chris did a good job planning, managing a crew, and discussing many design options. We highly recommend California Jungle to improve the look and value of your home.

I'm not much for writing reviews but my experience with Wall Brothers warrants noting. Mark and his crew are respectful, efficient, cost effective and most importantly do fantastic work. They demo'd a retaining wall, knocked out a solid concrete front porch and driveway. Graded everything to level, rebuilt the porch and poured a new stamped concrete driveway. I'm very happy to have connected with Mark via Thumbtack and would happily provide a referral should he ever need one.

Pacific Concrete did an amazing job on the entry way of my home. It was professional done and match perfectly my existing stucco. The work was also done with consideration for the floor tile ...they covered with plastic. They were always on time and kept in touch with me as to their arrival and progress. I highly recommend them ad I am looking forward to them returning soon to do a new driveway. Cathy in Dana Point, Ca

I had a driveway and block wall done by Master Builders. They did an excellent job and I recommended them to my circle of friends. The price was just right and the job they did looked more than what the actual cost of the job was. I will be using Master Builders for future projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
