I tried Elite tutoring for my daughter and when she was first assessed, had gaps going back to 4th grade in math. Her grades were mediocre at best. Now she is finishing the year on the honor roll and currently in Elite tutoring’s Algebra program. She's making A's in all of her classes. Thanks!

Our daughter has had only 2 lessons at the moment. The first was a very informative diagnostic test. So far we are very pleased with John and our daughter feels she is already improving.

John Bertinetti helped me study for the GMAT exam over the summer of 2017 with concentrated sessions to review GMAT Quant. John got me started on a study path by sharing info about the best study resources for my problem areas, and would meet with me once or twice a week to go over key Quant problems that I needed help solving. John is an ideal tutor for students who are good at keeping themselves on track without a structured curriculum. Great value, flexible scheduling, and clear explanations of problems are all huge wins with him. About halfway through the summer, I realized that I needed a structured class and more discipline to keep myself on schedule, so I supplemented my study sessions with John with an independent online class with a live teacher. Key lessons w/John: John is all about understanding the concepts behind a problem before sharing tricks; his method is great for learners like me who need to understand the math conceptually and don't want to just memorize formulas. We did a lot of work on combinatorics and probability, which were my challenge areas. He was a great and affordable supplemental resource for me beyond the class. Results: I went from a 580 on my Manhattan GMAT diagnostic to a 730 score on the actual GMAT after 3 months of light study followed by 2 months of intense study.

Amarnath Santhanam tutored my 12-year-old son in two math subjects, Algebra II and Trigonometry. His knowledge and command of material, his art of explaining most difficult subjects clearly and playfully, his ability to inspire a student and make him continuously interested and fascinated in the study -- made his classes an exciting experience for my son who considered Amarnath the teacher he has ever had. We will be delighted to invite Amarnath to tutor other math and science disciplines. He is a top-notch pedagogue.

Minok is an excellent math tutor for my daughter. Beginning of the school year my daughter has had some difficulties with her trig-algebra 2 class. She would like to improve her grade and prepare for finals. Minok came in fully prepared. I really appreciate that she genuinely cares about the student and she spent a lot of time preparing her class ahead of the time. Usually she will check with my daughter with what is on going in her class, and by time of tutoring she came with extra materials and practice to help the kids. By doing tutorial with her once a week, She was able to help my daughter improve her grade from B to an A and so far in the new trimester my daughter has been getting all As in her math test. We are very happy with her and will highly recommend her to all my friends.

Mr. Wekselgreene was my Algebra 2 teacher in high school. He's honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. He cares a lot about his students. He is committed to making sure each and every student who needs extra assistance leave the classroom understanding how to tackle a certain problem/topic. He has multiple ways of explaining and teaching the same math problem to ensure that all students grasp the concept. Mr Wekselgreene is a great math teacher/tutor.

George was my university tutor for calculus 2 and was great at responding whenever I had trouble with homework or questions regarding an upcoming exam. He was better than my on campus tutors who did not have strategies on how to explain difficult problems (he can dumb it down to your negative level if you need him to lol). I've recommended him to my friends and family, and they all have nothing but stellar things to say about him. Needless to say, I passed calculus 2 with an A, and I HATE MATH WITH UTMOST PASSION.

I doubt you would get a good instructor like Mr Yevegny. I am a 40+ year old guy trying to relearn calculus. I soon realized I had not had a good grip of algebra and trigonometry. He has patiently worked with me to improve my ubsertanding if the subject in my own pace. Without his guidance I would not have taken these steps either. He is extremely knowledgeable and provides a great insight at every step. Slowly piquing your interest and taking you more and more into the subject. Of course his dedication to teaching and the subject is reflected in his punctuality and professionalism. I hope you too would start your math travel with him. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me for further reference. Thanks Anand

Sowmya is an amazing tutor! I have always struggled with math, and my algebra 2 class seemed overwhelming. Sowmya breaks down concepts and makes them very easy to understand. She has changed the way I see math and I am confident I will ace my class.

Tim helped my daughter review some of the 10th grade Algebra concepts before starting the school year, over three two-hour sessions. Tim knows the program extremely well since he occasionally teaches for the school district. This was very useful for my daughter. I would definitely use the service again.

I hired Alex to tutor me on the quantitative section of the GRE. I had already taken the GRE twice and was looking to increase my score from a 161 to at least a 165. We met 7 times for 1.5 to 2 hour sessions. Alex was great! She set up a very intensive study plan for me and was very flexible about when we met! I ended up increasing my score to a 167 when I took the test! I highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their GRE or GMAT math scores!

Marina Sheppard is amazing. She is a phenomenal! My son attends Monta Vista HS in Cupertino and was struggling with geometry. He passed first semester with a D and barely made it to his second semester. I found Marina on Craigslist and called her right away. She was warm and incredibly sensitive to my son's challenges. Marina's tutoring style is patient and kind. She allowed my son to make mistakes and showed him that his understanding of geometry was stellar - his algebra skills that were poor. Her synopsis of this exemplified her professionalism and ability to locate the key reasons he was failing geometry. My son was finished his second semester with a passing grade = C as he aced his final exam. He is now a tutor for the SBS program at Monta Vista HS --- the same after school program offered at the high school for students (peer tutoring). Guess what subject? GEOMETRY. Marina helped my son realize his potential and encouraged him to study harder (and correctly). She is an exceptional tutor with a big heart and a great hug!

Kim taught in my second grade classroom for 2 months. She instantly made a connection with all of my students and their families to establish her own working relationship. Kim was always on-time and willing to do what was asked. Her lessons were appropriate for all learners with built-in scaffolding. She used manipulatives, partner work, and always checked for understanding. My experience with Kim in the classroom was excellent!

I highly recommend Mrs. Siegel for her patience and love for teaching. She used to be an elementary school teacher, so she knows how to make a student comfortable while they learn. I had an excellent experience as she has taught my two sons.

Ayesha was great tutor for me. She really helped me understand my math lesson and explained things more than one way. She was very helpful by reviewing some stuff from previous lessons that we had gone over. She also gave me some tips to remember the steps for some equations. I am thankful for the time she gave up to help me.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.

      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
