My elderly mother called me indicating her Air Conditioner was not working... during the start of a heat wave. Chris was very responsive, arrived on time, explained the problem in detail and had her up and running within an hour! I will refer Mars One Heating & Air Conditioning to anyone I know.

Dan arrived on-time, quickly diagnosed the problem, had the part and made the repair. Cost seemed fair and reasonable. In addition, checked the vent temperatures and gave me recommendations for improving my air conditioning situation. I was highly satisfied with the experience and would recommend him for HVAC service.

I loved that he was able to show me the price before he started and that is exactly what I paid for the service. No surprises or unexpected add ons like with other companies I've had work done by! Wow !!! Hands down the best air duct cleaning company around. I recently bought my house and noticed the ac wasn’t working in one of the rooms. Joseph came out and seen there was a major problem with one of the vents. He gave me an amazing deal with taping all the vents cleaning them out and giving me a new uv ray filter and it’s made such a difference in the air and my ac is working great. If you book for a cleaning every three months he gives you an additional credit. ?

I am very happy with the maintenance performed on my air conditioner/heat pump. My unit is 21 years old, but still running good. I was concerned about a maintenance call becoming a hard sales pitch by an unscrupulous company. After carefully looking at the reviews of several companies, I am glad that I chose ACP. I quickly came to trust Enrique. He thoroughly explained each of the procedures performed and made clear it was my choice whether to accept his recommendations. I accepted all of the recommendations, the unit is noticeably running better, plus he warrantied his work for the summer season. I plan to use his maintenance services in the future or if there is ever a problem with the unit. These days, it is hard to find people of integrity. I believe I have found that in Enrique.

He was a life saver to me and my handicapped husband. He showed up on time and immediately found the problem and fixed it on the spot. His price was very far. Not only did he get us out of a pickle but also went to our friends home and fixed theirs air conditioner when 2 other places couldn’t find anything wrong with HVAC system. Call him, you won’t be disappointed. Thank you Andrew

I have been trying to install laminate flooring for a long time and after getting quotes from several big box stores, I pretty much gave up. I decided to try local business and I posted here on Thumbtack. John got in touch with me almost immediately and was very on point. He wanted to get the job done ASAP. I had to postpone a few times because of scheduling conflicts and he was very flexible and understanding. We finally decided on a schedule. He showed up with his buddy Brandon, and they got to work almost immediately. It was fun to talk to them during the process and he explained what he was doing and why and asked if I was OK with his approach. I felt respected. John was up all night and he finished 99% of the work by 5AM next morning. I am very happy with my new floor. I would recommend John for any flooring related work with confidence.

My air conditioner broke down and the temperature inside the house rose to a balmy 89 degrees. It was one of those days in California. My two kids and wife weren't pleased. I called Greg who made time for me the very next day. Saw the problem immediately and diagnosed a malfunctioning converter motor. Greg checked the entire system and gave tips on how best to maintain a properly working AC system. He repaired and replaced the motor efficiently and at a reasonable cost. He is a very nice guy as well on top of the fact that he knows what he's doing. Thank you, Greg.

Hired them to install brand new heating and air conditioning system on my new construction home. They did a great job and after the construction was finished the system worked smoothly. The prices are very reasonable compared to other companies. I also recommended them to my uncle and they did a great job for him as well. Alex was easy to work with.

I had the pleasure of working with Ian from Mercury Heating and Air Conditioning. Our air conditioner stopped working during a really hot weekend and Ian came out to our house on a Sunday and got our unit working again. It required a lot of maintenance and Ian had all of the expertise to fix the problem. He even looked around our property and advised on how to maintain and protect our other units. Ian is extremely fair and hard working. I highly recommend him for any heating and cooling issues.

John came after dark and did great work on my system on my roof. He successfully got my heater working again, all for a very low price. He also recommended equipment maintenance improvements but didn't pressure me to do these extras now. I highly recommend Honest HVAC!

Wes installed a total of seven air handlers and two ductless heat pump units in my home. He was very accommodating and responsive, and worked with me remotely to design my system as I was on vacation when we first spoke. Very professional, and his prices are very reasonable. I would hire him again for any of my HVAC needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
