My ac stopped working last night so I got on thumbtack and posted about it. Chris was the first to respond to my post. He came out and was very informative, spending time explaining the repair process. He went above what was expected and gave me options on how to repair the issue in my ac unit. He resolved the issue within minutes of diagnosing it. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone in need of ac or heating repair services.

Epic Energy is amazing. They have installed my solar, windows, HVAC and a new patio cover and were very professional. All products installed are top notch. My energy bills have dropped considerably and my house stays as cool as I want it to be even during the hottest days of summer. Ive never owned a home where it can stay cool enough during the hot months of the summer. I dont do well when its hot inside my home and cant sleep if its too warm. Its so nice finally being able to be cool and live comfortably in my home no matter how hot it is outside. Very happy with Epic Energy.

We had upgraded windows installed and a new, more efficient, air conditioning system. The windows are beautiful and the installation was clean and professionally done. We are very impressed with the new heating and cooling system, it's ease of operation, it's efficiency, and the energy we hope to save. The installation of these components were also professionally done, the workmanship was superb.

I am very happy with the maintenance performed on my air conditioner/heat pump. My unit is 21 years old, but still running good. I was concerned about a maintenance call becoming a hard sales pitch by an unscrupulous company. After carefully looking at the reviews of several companies, I am glad that I chose ACP. I quickly came to trust Enrique. He thoroughly explained each of the procedures performed and made clear it was my choice whether to accept his recommendations. I accepted all of the recommendations, the unit is noticeably running better, plus he warrantied his work for the summer season. I plan to use his maintenance services in the future or if there is ever a problem with the unit. These days, it is hard to find people of integrity. I believe I have found that in Enrique.

We called empire about a furnace that wasn't working and they came out to look at it the same day. They determined the furnace needed a new gas control valve and brought one out the next day, during the process of installing the gas control valve they found a wire that was overheating due to a faulty blower and arranged to have a new furnace installed on the same day. The work was very professionally done and we are very happy with our new furnace.

Honesty and dependability are the two most important assets I look for in a contractor. Dave lived up to both expectations. He responded to my house within an hour and fully checked and serviced my heating unit. He could have easily padded his estimate by replacing components that were showing wear but he did not. He only advised me of the condition of the parts that would eventually require service. I would recommend Epic Air to others.

Our 35+ year old furnace bit the dust & decided to bid out for a furnace plus AC. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Freedom Heating & AC. We liked the way Jared explained the old HVAC system & comparing it to the benefits of a new system. We were able to schedule the job quickly & planned for a two day install. One day for DEMO & one day for install. So glad went went with Freedom, Jared, Jeff & Brad were really nice guys who take pride in their craft. We have a young child so they tried to keep noise to a minimum. We’re glad we went with AC unit too because it keeps the house nice and cool during this summer heat. Our new thermostat is nice and high tech & the filtration system really cleans out the air well. For a job well done, we received great price & high quality install & a really nice furnace & AC system. Freedom heating and AC are highly recommend by our family. Thank you!!

Bob provides a great value. He is an expert in AC/Heating (not a technician, but an Expert). He provides a good rate and communicates options. I never feel like he is trying to sell me a system. He just gives me the facts. I have rental property and he has replaced 4 AC units for me so far. I highly recommend.

I am more than satisfied with Scott's Chiminey! He was fast at responding with a quote and scheduled my cleaning within a couple of days. When he arrived he was extremely polite and friendly. He even educated my 4 year old with a few fun facts about the history of Chiminey sweeping. Gregory was very knowledgeable and experienced with his profession. He informed me of maintenance that was needed without the pressure of being nickel and dimed. I was not left with a mess to clean up afterwards. He gave me plenty of tips on how to get the most heat from our fireplace. Scott's Chiminey has definitely earned our business!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
