Alisa was hired to cater our wedding of 35 guests at a private residence. She went above and beyond call of duty with cocktails, appetizers, the dinner, and setting up, breaking down the event. She arrived early to set up for both the ceremony and the dinner, and provided the cocktails and beer which received reave reviews from the guests. For the appetizers, she provided polenta bites and bruschetta in keeping with our Italian menu and both were really tasty. The dinner menu consisted of a caesar salad with grilled salmon, tomato bisque, and a cappellacci di zucca; all were truly delicious. She cleaned up the same night, making it easy for us to enjoy the kitchen the next morning for breakfast. If I were to host another event, I would hire Alisa in a heartbeat.

Martha and Arturo’s company, Taste for the Senses, provided the catering for our wedding in May of 2014 (I know, it took me FAR too long to write a review!) I can not begin to describe the amazing service they gave our guests! The food was beyond delicious – In fact, I still get compliments on how wonderful their set up was and how great their food tasted (best vegetarian tamales EVER). Several people have told me it’s the best wedding food they’ve ever had and I would have to agree! Not only were Martha, Arturo, and the rest of their staff so friendly and professional, but they really went above and beyond for our wedding ( I do not have enough space here to document all the ways, outside of catering, they actually helped on our wedding day). There were several times when our wedding planner completely dropped the ball and things could have ended in absolute disaster but Martha and Arturo were right there to pick up the slack so that our guests were not aware of any issues the day of our event. Taste for the Senses truly made our day special for us and for that, we are forever grateful. You can tell that Arturo LOVES what he does and is passionate about making every event he caters a special one. The thing that really stood out to me, and touched my heart, is that Arturo and Martha brought my parents some of their delicious food a few days after the wedding when they learned that my parents didn’t get to eat because they were busy holding things together at the wedding during dinner. They absolutely did not have to do that for us – it was amazing. They both are wonderful people and I would definitely recommend them for any event, especially a wedding (in fact, I try to every chance I get!)

My wife and I hired Boris to cater our wedding at American River Resorts in Coloma, CA. We weren't planning to hire anyone as we had friends from culinary school that were going to do the job for us very cheaply, but that fell through and we had to go through a rush to hire someone and explain our unique and different menu (sweet potato bar, vegan chili, gluten free corn bread, special holiday sangria, desert bar, etc) on a somewhat limited budget with limited time. Boris was easy to work with and provided helpful solutions and was very amenable to changes but also insightful in his rebuttal when some ideas weren't feasible or could be done better given our circumstances. The day of the family was a few minutes late because of traffic on a small mountain road (a circumstance not within his or my control, lol), but they got setup quickly and had food out sooner than expected. The meal was absolutely delicious and everyone raved about both the meat based and the meatless chilis as well as the beautiful purple potatoes. SUCH GOOD FLAVOR!!!! The only complaint my wife had was that because they were late getting in, and some confusion, the sangria we asked them to make and place on the tables didn't get placed on the tables until about 30m in to the cocktail hour. Our bridesmaids had to make sure the sangria got moved from the kitchen to the dining hall. However, that's a minor issue, and overall because of the amazing flavor, quantity of food (and leftovers for a week, mmmmm), quality of production, and the efficiency of the whole team (which is a whole family operation) - we were highly satisfied with Global Gourmet. My suggestion to anyone is to be as clear and concise as possible with your directions and designate someone who is NOT the bride on the day of to do any of the logistics so that any of those minor issues won't be a problem. HIRE BORIS!

We had our 7/2/16 wedding catered by C's BBQ and Chris & Dotty did a superb job, not to mention the food was delicious!!! Let me start by saying that Chris is a great communicator! He quickly responded to all my emails and his responses always put my mind at ease. With all the stress of wedding planning, the one aspect that I felt confident about was the food. And speaking of, we offered a buffet that included brisket, which can be tricky if not done right, but Chris did not fail to deliver. Not only was the brisket raved about, the chicken was moist and tasty, the chipotle baked beans were devoured, the potato salad was fantastic, the mac & cheese was creamy, and the cornbread was the perfect balance of sweet, savory & yummy! We ordered enough to feed 100, and had more than enough food. At the end of dinner, Chris & Dotty discretely broke down the buffet (professional stainless steel chaffing dishes), packaged up the leftovers and stored them in the refrigerator for us to take home and enjoy later. We can't thank them enough for helping to make our BIG day shine! We continue to receive compliments on the great food and the professionalism of Chris & Dotty and If you're considering BBQ for your wedding, you can't go wrong with C's BBQ! Cheers! Chef Hernandez made my bosses 25th Wedding Anniversary really, truly something special! They had a "Tour Around the World in 4 bites" (4 course) meal, in which they were able to be hands on, and learn new cooking skills. They described the night as a "HOME RUN!" and "The best night ever!" Chef Hernandez will ABSOLUTELY be our #1 contact for future events and parties.

Her set-up, presentation, food, and even removal of everything was incredibly smooth. All my guests, & myself were amazed how wonderful everything she prepared was so tasty, & fresh. This review does not fully compare to the actual experience of having Mimi as our wedding planner. My husband and I fell in love with her! I was referred to her by a friend a month or so before my wedding. You can imagine the details that needed to be done before that time frame. Not only did she take on the challenge of helping us, but went out of her way so our day was perfect. I live in concord, and she drove out 1 1/2 away to come meet with us several times. She kept good track of the things that still needed to be done. Her organization was phenomenal! Constant communication and support were there more than 100% (even for my emotional days) Besides the planning, she took care of the table centerpieces herself! Which were beautifully made with natural flowers on all 15-18 tables including our head table. Our guests, including vendors we hired were so impressed with her work, and most importantly by my husband and I. She found the best deals possible and made everything perfect yet affordable for us. Not only would we consider going through her all over again, but know we will continue to use her for future events and highly recommend her. We know that we didn't just find a good event/wedding planner, but a great friend that we will keep in touch with. Thank you again Mimi for helping us with our unforgettable perfect day!

Basic Catering is much more than catering company, it is a full service event company. Aristotle says "if a man does many things, they cannot do one thing well." That's not the case with Basic Catering. I hired them for a small wedding reception, and I was very impressed with their service. I'll list them as follows: 1. All my guests raved about the food. It was perfectly cooked and the quantity was worth the value. 2. They rent out their own party rentals (tables, silverware, plates, etc.) at a cost cheaper than the competitors. This was significant savings for me with no sacrifice on the quality. This also made clean-up a lot easier. I was not worried about the clean-up, but it did save me on venue costs. (They also do flowers) 3. Lastly, the most impressive aspect of Basic Catering is their professionalism. There will always be something missing or something that goes wrong. Their team is extremely resourceful, from their planners (Ben) to the people executing (Carie) and the waitstaff -- I am a big fan of resourcefulness. They thought of things I missed, and if something was wrong they made it right. They are quick and smart, and know how to get things done. They assisted in making one of the most significant days of my life a wonderful event. Thanks Ben. You did a fantastic job coordinating.

Wanting to learn to cook lower calorie food that still had great flavor, I hired Zac to come to my home and teach in our kitchen. My husband is our (excellent) cook, I am not a cook (at fifty-something years old), presenting a bit of a challenge. Rising to the occasion, Zac planned a meal that read like the menu at French Laundry! Panic! There was no way I could prepare this meal. Zac said...Way! He met me at Sonoma Market to introduce me to fresh everything, not packaged anything! Back at our kitchen, the magic began and WOW! Probably one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had at home, and certainly rivaling 5 star restaurants. Our cooking and dining experience was nothing short of superb and better yet, not a dollop of butter or a drop of cream was used to create the fantastic soup, salad, and complex main course. Through Zac's exceptional knowledge of herbs and spices, he taught me to create extraordinary flavors to enhance the food, and not over power it. It was a brilliant evening of cooking! Zac is easy going, yet very assured, and his ability to communicate is second to none. Remarkable job by a talented young man who will be continuing to educate us in the kitchen and most assuredly catering events for us. Bravo, Zac...Bravo!

Laurel helped me plan an amazing 30th Birthday Brunch. She was thoughtful with the menu and the food was fresh and seasonal, just as we discussed. There were roughly ~20 in attendance and her team made me feel like a guest at my own party. Will definitely use her again.

The eggs, bacon, fruit and muffins were all of excellent quality. His cleanup was superb also, making it so easy for the parents of the bride!!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience having Chrysalis Catering working my son's graduation party. Tameeka had great communication skills. She always kept in contact with me before and during the event. She was professional and attentive to the needs of the party and made sure the meal was prepared on time. My guests were also impressed with Tameeka and asked for her card to cater their future events. This was the first time I used this app and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Chrysalis Catering is top notch.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
