I hadn't used thumbtack before when I inquired via a Google search, about finding a good caterer/chef. After receiving numerous responses, I checked out 3 and asked for proposals. As soon as I heard Chef Marcel's voice, I sensed his sincerity and eagerness to please and I appreciated his warmth during our business conversation. While I wasn't able to make a decision right away due to an extensive business trip abroad, I told him I would call him upon my return to the U.S. When I returned, I told him that he was competing against another caterer and he simply said "what will it take to gain your business" and I instantly knew he was the person I wanted. I told him that I would first need to taste his food before a final decision was made and he invited me to his home where inner his lovely wife a baby girl. After tasting his delicious food, I told him he had the job and 2 others, all within a month's time period. Chef Marcel aims to please and my events have all turned out beautiful with delicious food and caring service. Relationships and trust are very important to me and chef Marcel along with his wife, are now a relationship that I truly value. I will continue to use his services for the many future events that I've planned while enjoying the additional benefits of working with a "friend". Give him a call and I'm confident you will choose no other.

I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

Chef Mumsie is, without exception, one of the best caterers I have worked with in the Los Angeles area. Her personal service, commitment to excellence, and over-and-above contributions made our several week-long meetings (during Summer 2014) a huge success. The menus were savory and enjoyed by all guests, the food was delivered fresh, not and easy for us to display well. Knowing that all the catering was completely taken care of allowed me to focus on the things that mattered--my guests! Not a single detail was missed. I very highly recommend Chef Mumsie's services to anyone in the Orange or Los Angeles County areas for any event, large or small. Without question, I will be a repeat customer! Thank you!

I hired Sierra Madre Catering for my husband's 40th birthday party held at my home. The set up process was so easy, they were so accommodating with the menu I wanted (even though it included fried foods and philly cheese steak sandwiches which are hard to make on-site). The moment they got to my house, Tonya and her chefs were so professional, speedy, on top of it all! They made my night so much easier and fun and I finally got to enjoy my own party for once! They left my house very neat like my kitchen was never used! They picked up after my guests throughout the night. My favorites were inside-out Philly cheese steak, pulled pork sliders, mac & cheese, potstickers and garlic fries. Thank you and looking forward to seeing you again!

Jordan is an excellent chef and caterer. He produces food that is way beyond the standard catering services. If you want cookie cutter catering go with someone else. If you want really great food at a great price stop on by or use his catering.

This event went off without a hitch. Mobile Caterer was on time, on point and on the ball for the entirety of the event. They rolled with the changes I had and made the event a complete success. The food was incredible. The set up was beautiful. They went above and beyond considering they had the best value of any of the caterers who responded to my project request. It was truly seamless and effortless.

Food First Events & Catering Co. recently did two events for my company and the feedback was amazing! The food was stepped up in such a way that the impact was noticeable. The breakfast spreads that were delivered on time and set up impeccably were delicious with a few notable homemade pastry items that left people talking! I experienced nothing but professionalism, reliability and class from this experience. Also, working with David to make sure I met my budget was extremely easy and he was eager to help meet my needs without compromising quality. I highly recommend!

I have worked at UCLA for almost 10 years and have had the opportunity to work with Marcus several times when organizing both small and large scale high level events. Each time we have received complete professionalism from Marcus and his staff. His attention to detail covers absolutely any aspect of an event. Which is fantastic because that meant I didn't need to have another vendor for our event needs. His menu is creative, excellent quality of food and he is always open to tailoring an event around your specific needs. I am extremely detail oriented so when I organize an event I need someone like minded and flexible. Marcus provides just that and will work with your budget; which is very important to UCLA. We always look forward to the next time we can use Feast Catering! Suzanne Smith Deputy to the Associate Vice Chancellor & Executive Director UCLA Academic Planning & Budget

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I have hired other caterers in the past, but none of them come close the experience I had with Chef Lofthouse and his team. Chef Lofthouse created a spectacular menu and it was delicious to eat. He and his team took care of all of the planning and set-up for the event. They served perfectly on time, and gave me and my guests such great service, that my guests are still emailing me to get Chef Lofthouse's phone number. You are missing out if you don't have him cater your party!

I am thrilled to share with you my experience with Chef LaTay. First it must said, her food is AMAZING. In Jan 2015, I married the love of my life; I had a small backyard wedding of about 75 ppl total and Chef LaTay catered the food for my special day. We decided to go with Tri-Tip Roast, Fully loaded mashed potatoes, Green Beans, and Salad. Her food was a hit. Delicious and memorable. My guests were happily fed and pleased with every bite and so was I. In the past, Chef LaTay would do weekly orders every Friday and Saturdays where she would deliver her meals to those local near her. It was a huge meal that came with dessert and a drink, worth the price indeed. That’s where/when I would also have some of her other delicious foods. My personal favorites are her Macaroni and Cheese, her Salmon, her Enchiladas, her Chicken (every way she makes it), and her Oxtail. She also makes wonderful tasty desserts. Her cakes are all homemade and are to die for. I love her Chocolate cake and her frostings are the best! Better than any other cakes I’ve had. And I can’t forget the dessert my husband and I always ask for throughout the year, Banana Pudding! Again, AMAZING! It is an honor to have Chef LaTay’s food be a part of my life. Every delicious bite makes you wish there was no such thing as getting full. Having her for your events or for a small special occasion, you won’t be disappointed. Chef LaTay is very creative with her food and service. She comes with class and excellent customer service. She makes sure you get what you asked for; just very professional with a welcoming loving spirit. Chef LaTay It’s Made Devine is worth your time to try her food, because I guarantee you, you’ll be asking for more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
