Freddy and is team came in and did an amazing job installing all new drywall over and around my fireplace where we took down the mantle and surround. Now its ready for me to paint! It looks like a brand new wall. He and his team were very meticulous about their work and the results. They didn't leave until it was 10000% ready. I'll absolutely be working with Freddy and his team again. Amazing!! THANK YOU!!

Houman helped us improve our home by removing a large, outdated fireplace and chimney. This was no simple job. It required hammering out 7 tons of brick and concrete that made up the fireplace/chimney. The vacated space was then rebuilt to house a French door. An adjacent existing sliding door was also replaced with an identical French door. Houman was always on time, and held true to his estimate. He is very detail oriented, communicative, very clean, and organized. It was not just Houman, the rest of team were equally amiable and trustworthy. The best thing that I can say is that we will definitely employ Houman for future renovations to our home.

Petar was wonderful to work with, very professional and honest. He confirmed our appointment the day before and notified us 30 minutes before he arrived. He was onetime and worked quickly. We hired him to remove piping where an old vanity in our living room used to be. He cut back the piping, installed drywall and applied texture to the wall. The completed wall looks amazing! You can't tell there was ever a hideous vanity there! We had a few other projects that we needed estimates for and Petar was able to accomplish the jobs during the same visit. His prices were reasonable and we felt really comfortable working with him. We'll definitely be hiring Petar again.

I hired Vahe to do several different jobs and he did each one exceptionally well, and quickly. He was prompt, kind, easy to work with and actually restored a vintage mid-century table leg in addition to assembling furniture and wall mounting a TV. I will hire him again and I would give both his pricing and his work, five stars, and I can whole heartedly recommend him to anyone looking for thorough and careful work done in their home. His skills are varied and I know I will hire him for additional work to come.

PROFESSIONALISM IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT when speaking of this person. Respectful, Courteous, AMBICIOUS, FAITHFUL to the customer. My husband was coming home on leave from the military and the remodeling of our bathroom was my gift to him. I couldn't wait to get started. I phoned Jim on Sunday, and he started the next morning. His time from start to finish was right on. The work that was done was to tear out everything and replace with new. I was excited to see the end result. He did electrical, lighting, plumbing, painting, tiled the shower walls, and floor. Installed (for the disabled) bars inside the shower as well by the toilet. New shower head too. He is a genius. LOOK NO FURTHER. The job was to the utmost expectancy of myself. When finished it was as if I was walking onto a showroom floor. You could tell by the way Jim works that he enjoys what he does. And once I saw it...alls I can say is, "YOU CAN'T GET ANY BETTER"!

Zee was actually painting the home across the street, and we asked him for an estimate. He gave us a fair price and a time estimate to complete the job. His work was meticulous and beautiful. We have crown molding throughout our home, he painted the ceilings, wall moldings and all walls. When the color we selected didn't turn out the way we wanted, he came back and repainted a couple of rooms. Works hard to please the customer and guarantees his work. He did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him.

Edwin initially came to my house to look at the bedroom I needed painted. He quoted me the highest but also guaranteed quality work (and good coverage since the original color in the room was a taupe and I wanted it white). So that’s why I went with edwin. I trusted that he would make sure the work was done correctly. We scheduled another day for him to come to put 3 sample colors on the walls so I could decide on the right color for the room. After he put the samples on the room, I picked a shade of white. His staff taped off the room and then began the work. After the 3 coats of paint, I went in the room to inspect. I noticed some spots that seemed uneven even after the paint had dried. Edwin was quick to fix those areas. Edwin and his assistant left that day but the next morning, I noticed more areas where I could see the old color come through. So without hesitation, Edwin said he would come back a few days later to make sure the painting of all the walls were done to my liking.

Frank did a fantastic job repairing my wood fencing and repatching my stucco wall. I am extremely picky when it comes to stucco finish and I must say that he exceeded my expectations. His work blended perfectly with the wall leaving no hint of the repatching. He also replaced several old wood planks in my fencing making sure to match his work with what is already in place. After painting the fencing, it looked brand new. Frank was quick to reply with a quote, quick to stop by and discuss/review the project with me and quick to get the job completed upon hiring him. He is very professional, knowledgeable and has an impressive work ethic. I highly recommend him based on my own experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
