"I've got massages from Jessica since December 2017. I keep having low-back problems from time to time as I'm sitting all day at work and my hamstrings become too tight. She carefully listens to my requests and develops unique plans combining various massage techniques, moves, and stretches. She resolves the problem areas with smooth, uniform pressure, and also helps me become deeply relaxed. She works very efficiently and with great precision, and usually leaves me with some great tips on posture. She thoroughly understands the human body and never hesitates to explain the cause of my problems with the scientific names of muscles, ligaments, and bones. Jessica is extremely professional and takes great care to make me feel comfortable throughout the session. She has a calm, kind, intuitive, and scientific nature and it is such a wonderful experience to get a massage from her."

"I live in LA but I still keep in constant communication with the Intentio staff who, even from a distance of 500 miles, are the best at advising me on how best to achieve my fitness & nutritional goals. It's so rare to find a group of people so single-mindedly focused on actual health rather than the aesthetic benefits of looking good, which seems to be the prevailing raison d'être of trainers here in SoCal. I can't recommend Anna or her team highly enough! It's worth every penny. "

"Shannon is a very talented and intuitive massage therapist who takes excellent care of her clients. I came in for an hour massage and the time just flew by! Unlike other therapists I've had, Shannon first asked about my experiences and really tried to understand what my needs, concerns were. When she worked on my upper back where the tensions were, she was very gentle at first and easing in with increasing pressure. She was also very knowledgeable - using different techniques for different areas. I only wished I had booked 90 minutes massage- I'd highly recommend her! "

"My experience with Jennifer could not have been more positive. I am so grateful to have connected with her by “the luck of the draw.” My mother’s apartment was severely neglected after she sustained an injury due to a fall. Jennifer fit my mother into her already demanding schedule. When my mother tired and wanted to go to bed, Jennifer graciously made a 2nd visit to complete the job. All the while she maintained contact with me regarding my mother’s needs and updates on progress. Jennifer went above and beyond helping my mother get organized. When she finished, my mother’s apartment was spotless and organized. My mother was grateful for the beautiful job that Jennifer did, as well as for the lovely person she was. Jennifer even followed up in the following days to inquire about how my mother was doing. Jennifer was so accommodating and thoughtful. Exemplary service and a beautiful person. I would absolutely, highly recommend Jennifer. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤️"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a therapeutic massage tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body. Before having a prenatal massage, always check in with your prenatal care provider and ask if massage therapy will be safe for you and your pregnancy. A pregnancy massage is much more than just an indulgence. The specialized strokes and techniques used to loosen tight muscles, reduce swelling, alleviate pressure, and ease tension provide positive health benefits for both you and your baby. Experts recommend finding a massage therapist who has received additional training on prenatal massage techniques. This is typically a certification above and beyond their standard massage therapy certification and training requirements. During the massage you will likely lie on your side or in a semi-reclined position; these supported poses keep you and the baby comfortable and free from strain or undue pressure. During the massage, the therapist will listen to what body challenges you are experiencing and work to release tension. The massage should be a relaxing and very soothing experience.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

Is Swedish massage safe during pregnancy?

As long as your prenatal care physician has cleared you for prenatal massage, it should be safe to indulge yourself in a Swedish massage during pregnancy. In fact, scheduling regular pregnancy massages can have wonderful health benefits for you and the baby. Swedish and other massages can feel great and also have a variety of health benefits, according to studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage include reduction in leg and back pain, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a better overall mood.

To find the right massage therapist for you, read the therapist’s online reviews and call to ask them about their experience with prenatal massage. Massage therapists who have been specially trained in prenatal massage techniques often advertise this area of expertise on their websites. Don’t hesitate to ask questions beforehand, and to communicate during the massage about what does and does not feel good.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

Can you have massages while pregnant?

Not only can you have a massage while pregnant, multiple scientific studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services demonstrate that pregnancy massages provide physical and mental benefits to pregnant women and women in labor. Always ask your OB-GYN about receiving massages before starting any massage therapy to make sure it is safe for your own pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can alleviate pain, improve mental health and feel great. According to the DHHS, the benefits can include:

  • Decreased depression.
  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Decreased leg and back pain.
  • Lower cortisol levels, which in turn lowers prematurity rates.
  • Lessened labor pain (for women who received massage during labor).
  • Labor time that is three hours shorter, on average, for women who receive massage during labor.
