Laura contacted me immediately, and through initial discussion she had a plan to take my resume on to make it reflect the professional I was. There were clear interim communications and refinements, also a plan to provide a cover letter and take my LinkedIn profile to the next level. Within a couple days drafts were sent for review and comment. The products were finalized beautifully and exceeded expectations. All of this was done in less than 5 business days! I would recommend Laura/Anew to anyone looking for a professional makeover.

Margi always does a great job with her business coaching. We have been in business for 8 years in two locations and Margi's improvisational style to coaching unique problems has always helped me see a perspective that I had no idea was even an option. I value her opinion and expertise in any business problem we have. She is also highly creative and will bring up solutions to potential road blocks that we did not even see. She is invaluable to me!

I hired Jessica to help me with editing my previously self-published book, a true-life story about an amazing time in my life. She made the whole process very easy: she came to my home and we sat and talked, then she would go off and somehow perfectly translate my confused scribbles into what I was trying to say! Her writing is absolutely beautiful, and captured my deeper vision on paper. Jessica's company is called Write Angels, and what an angel she is! -Liz G.

I've requested the writing expertise of Gene Vann on several occasions. In fact quite a few students and business owners from the Normal Heights Business District where his office is located here in San Diego come to him for help with projects. He's a nice guy and well known in the community for that. He cares about you as a person, he's reasonable and very timely. I'm very comfortable with recommending Gene.

Joseph Descans helped me with the editing of several documents. His knowledge and editing skills were outstanding, and his patience with the process was the best part. It can be tremendously frustrating when you have "writer's block" and the words just don't come out right, but a patient tutor is such a great asset to have in your back pocket!

Max Pete redid my father's website for his painting business. I was expecting I would need to facilitate the conversation but Max did a really good job of staying in touch and working on a timeline that worked on my fathers end. Max's end product was fantastic and is not only an upgrade but geared towards driving in new clients for my fathers business. Max clearly values his clients ROI and made that clear during his business relationship.

About 3 years ago I stumbled on a flyer advertising a cartooning class taught by Sean Michael Robinson. As I had been an amateur cartoonist since the 8th grade I was intrigued…a friend at the art supply store I go to encouraged me to sign up, stating Sean “has quite a following”. I must say that after the very first class I was more than pleasantly surprised! Sean is one of the best art instructors I’ve ever had. He is engaging, kind, and dynamic. His classes are challenging yet fun! Sean pushes you out of your boundaries to explore your creativity – in a way that is at once exciting and non-threatening. I learned sooo much from Sean about drawing, inking, perspective, color – he covers it all. My personal experience after a few of his classes was that I was very motivated to continue – because Sean’s instruction and encouragement had given me the confidence I needed. This weekend I will be exhibiting my comics, watercolors and linocuts at a local festival and as I told Sean ~ I couldn’t have done it without the little push I got from him! ~Stephanie Morgan

Consummate professional are the first words that come to mind for Jan Eckland, when I reflect. She is creative, articulate, educated, and thorough in all she presents. Fact checking has been one of the hallmarks of her career. You can expect a new and stylish twist to any project in the written form, photographic or video presentation that you assign to Jan. She has an inquisitive nature that will weave it's way into her work that translates flawlessly to the reader or viewer. Her project timing is on point and she will become a valued resource to you as I am sure you will select her repeatedly for additional work. Jan is a quick learner to a new topic, and extremely focused on meeting each and every deadline to your satisfaction. Jan Eckland has my highest recommendation. Please feel free to contact me at any time regarding Jan Eckland's professional abilities. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
