Coastal Music Studios....hmmm. where do I start! We began with Coastal Music Studios about three years ago when my two daughters took a "free" week-long music summer camp. I was so impressed by the hands-on learning that was taking place that I knew I needed to look into this place a bit closer. Found out that they not only offered the music camp but also a '"free" children's choir, which both my girls have attended. I quickly set up an appointment to see if my girls would like to take music lessons. After that meeting, one daughter began piano lessons and the other voice. Mr. Andy and Ms. Pam have been absolutely amazing with regards to my girls' and their music experience. They are patient, knowledgeable, engaging, and caring. Those qualities are extremely important to all children, but when you have a child with special needs, it becomes even more so. My daughter is deaf and has been taking piano lessons with Ms. Pam for the past 2 1/2 years. On my daughters first lesson, Ms. Pam had researched cochlear implants and already had a plan in place to ensure that my daughter would get the most of her lesson. And then there's my other daughter, spunky, feisty, and full of piss and vinegar, and Ms. Pam knows how to deal with that, too! We cannot thank them enough and appreciate all that they do for all children to bring a love of music to their hearts. I would highly recommending Coastal Music Studios, you cannot find a better studio!

I took Violin lessons with Nader for about eight years, and I can confidently say that those eight years made me the musician that I am today. When I first met with Nader, I could barely scratch out an elementary level piece. However, I do believe that I can now play any piece with the ability and technique I learned from Nader. Each lesson consists of scales and arpeggios, scale studies, etudes, bow studies, and one or two pieces of music. Nader teaches with an emphasis on the fundamentals (scales, arpeggios, scale studies, etc.) so as to build the best foundation possible. As far as music goes, the pieces vary with respect to time period and style. Over the years I played and performed several Baroque pieces (Bach Sonatas and Partitas, Leclair Sonata) some Classical pieces (Mozart Violin Concerto) and many Romantic pieces (to name a few: Wienawski Violin Concerto, Debussy’s Claire De Lune, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance, Saint-Saens’ Introduction et. Rondo Capriccioso, Bruch Violin Concerto, Manuel de Falla’s Asturiana) and a few modern pieces (e.g. Barber’s Violin Concerto). For the beginning student, Nader usually chooses a few selections from the Suzuki books, although he doesn’t necessarily teach the Suzuki method. He will also incorporate sight singing (Melodia) and ear training into the lesson to ensure that the student develops and sharpens a proper musical ear. Over the years I was introduced to and learned many of the important techniques associated with stringed instruments (e.g. vibrato, octaves, fingered octaves, double and triple stops, chords, artificial harmonics, Spicatto, Staccato (and other common bow manipulations), proper shifting between all positions, pizzicato, phrasing, etc.) He has an extensive knowledge of technique and composition which he uses to give the student the best education possible on the matter. Nader also makes sure the student understands that there is more to music than simply playing the notes. He teaches how to phrase and incorporate one’s own musicality into the piece. He also teaches the student about the culture and history surrounding the composer/piece that they are working on. This is not only informative, but also keeps one interested even if they find the piece difficult or frustrating. There is an annual concert where all the students perform the pieces they had been working on with Nader. This is a fun event with a relaxed yet professional atmosphere where students can showcase their talent and technical improvement. I always enjoyed these concerts as they were a tangible reminder of my own improvement and achievements. In retrospect, I found my lessons with Nader to be a very well-rounded experience. Not only did I learn how to play an instrument, but I learned how to be a musician. He is an awesome teacher and I cherish the time I spent learning from him; I wouldn't trade my experiences with Nader for anything. He always pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of and I learned so much from that. He is a very amiable, patient, passionate, generous, and patient teacher, so don’t be afraid to call! Whether you are young or old, beginner or advanced, there is always more to learn. Let Nader be your next teacher!

Dr. Webber provided cello instruction for my young daughter for 2 years. She was incredible. She had the kindness and patience to work with a 5-7 year old, but also the demand for excellence that propelled my daughter into a successful young cellist. Under Dr. Webber's guidance, my daughter progressed through the Suzuki books, learned shifting positions, scales, and important technique, while also having fun playing the blues and other styles. My daughter always left her lessons with a smile on her face and a desire to keep working hard. Dr. Webber created achievable, manageable goals and offered praise when deserved. She cared deeply about my child's success and happiness. We could not have asked for a better cello teacher.

As a professional musician (guitar and vocals) that does not read music, I have had a few lessons with this guy to help with my reading of music, theory, and soloing. He presents everything to me in a very understandable manner and exudes the utmost patience in getting me to the next level. I have never had music lessons before so this seemed daunting at first but now I have broken through long standing plateaus and I am reinvigorated to push myself to the next level. I will definitely be continuing this approach with Mr violin in the future.

I enjoy teaching at B&H because the students and I have a private studio with air conditioning. I don't have to dodge traffic jams on the 5 or the 78 which cause delay in the schedule. There is plenty of parking in back of the store and the parents can do errands while the kids have a music lesson. If the students need reeds or new method books, the parents can purchase everything at the store. I teach all ages and all levels and I believe everyone can achieve on a musical instrument. Daniel was my son's cello and guitar teacher for several years. He is unbelievably talented, sensitive to each child's needs in the short and long term, and my son always both enjoyed and learned a lot from his sessions. I recommend Daniel Plane enthusiastically and unreservedly.

    About

Hi! My name is Sam Goble. I am a young cellist who lives in the San Carlos area and has been playing for over seven years. I have been a principal cellist in school orchestras for about five years, and I have played with several honor groups and small ensembles. I am currently studying cello under a private teacher and taking music theory/vocal technique classes. Part of being the principal of a section in an orchestra is learning how to lead your fellow players by setting an example of technique as well as providing feedback to those who are struggling with the music or unsure about interpretation. My experience as a leader in orchestras has given me experience with teaching players younger than me and improving their technical foundation. Many players under me have struggled with the concepts of reading music and rhythms, so I can provide assistance with music theory. Because of the impact music has had on my life, I believe that love for it is an especially important quality to reinforce in children. I also believe that children, especially those learning to play an instrument have a unique perspective on music. I consider the experience of teaching a learning opportunity for myself, so I am very willing to make accommodations. I am mostly interested in teaching young beginners, because I believe I have the most to offer to them. I can also teach those who are at a more intermediate (7-10th grade) by providing feedback and advice. If you are interested in my service, please know that I am willing to travel to you or have you travel to me. Please provide some info in your message, such as name, age/grade, years playing, etc. Thank you for considering me!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.

    How much are cello lessons?
