I was a little skeptical as hired Jesus for a work event. I was worried that things would go wrong making me look bad with the agency. I am pleased to say that I worried for nothing. The Caterers were punctual, professional, clean and courteous. The food was delicious. Everyone loved the food and where highly impressed with the freshness and authentic flavor! Some are considering hiring Baja's Tacos for future events. Caterers prepped the food on site rather quick, served guests for 2 hours and put all the leftovers in containers for me. Event was for 60 people and had more than enough food for everyone to enjoy. Overall I was very impressed and pleased with the service and food. Would definitely hire again! Gracias!

WOW! From the start of conversations regarding the menu to the actual evening of the event, Lilian was personable, attentive and understanding. She took a very professional approach to the dinner but always kept it light and fun. Never thought I would her laughing and joking from a kitchen during prep, but Lilian and Alan obviously enjoy working together in a kitchen. The food that Lil and Alan prepared was amazing! Our dinner party was for 14 with a variety of likes and tastes that Lil was able to cater to. The apps were a stellar combination of a cold and hot antipasto - the cheeses and meats, the baked clams, the stuffed mushrooms and the eggplant were phenomenal and the bean shooter to die for! For a pasta dish we chose 3 cheese gnocchi and a veal pappardelle, and we weren't disappointed. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. The only problem was the group was quickly filling up from making sure they all tried everything as the reviews were already overwhelming. Well, the main course was like hitting a perfect crescendo - the swordfish sicileano tasted like it could have been made on the shores of the Adriatic, delicious! and the chicken parm, we had some non adventurous diners, drew rave reviews as well. All in all, the dinner was a smash hit! The best thing about it was that we did it on a Tuesday, that meant we could ask Lil and Alan to come back for our farewell to San Diego dinner on Friday night - and come back they did to help us celebrate a great week in La Jolla with a Mexican theme dinner party. Another outstanding dinner highlighted by the seafood cerviche, the home made salsa and guacomole with chips, the main course of skirt steaks and shrimp made mexican style with an amazing Mexican grilled corn and delicious rice and beans! The topper of the evening was an amazing creme brulee. My group can't thank Lilian and Alan for two dinners that we will be talking about for a long time.

Chef Shawna was fantastic. We had a group of 20 for a joint Bachlor/Bachelorette party in Temecula. She created a delicious meal for the group and was able to accommodate one guest that is gluten and dairy free (even bringing them 1 special dessert)! She was responsive and very friendly. She also brought table cloths and some light decor to make the table and setting look fantastic. Everyone in the group loved the food and said it was the highlight of our weekend. Would definitely hire Chef Shawna for another event in the area!

June was fantastic! She was extremely responsive to every inquiry/email I had, and made it so easy to decide on our menu for our event (Bridal Shower). Her pricing is extremely affordable, and the food was delicious! Everyone loved all the food, but the crowd favorite was definitely the Cheesy Hashbrown casserole. I would highly recommend her for any event catering needs!!

I contacted Sage Bleu based on the reviews I saw here. Although there were other caterers with more reviews, I was looking for a talented caterer, not jaded by decades in the business, who would go the extra mile to deliver superlative food and service. The reviews I saw here painted a picture of incredible food and personalized, unobtrusive, caring service, so I called Sage Bleu. When I spoke with Lavonne, I casually mentioned a few dishes that only the most savvy food aficionado would know. She subtly let me know that she not only knew what those dishes were, but knew how to prepare them. SOLD! I had Sage Bleu cater a casual neighborhood get together as well as a white tablecloth dinner for a dozen finicky business associates. The food selections were appropriate for both crowds. The food, wine pairings and presentation were impeccable. Service began exactly at the appointed time and clean-up was to the highest white glove standard. I cannot recommend Sage Bleu highly enough!

I posted a need for a caterer on Thumbtack last December, when I started planning for a large corporate gala in San Diego. At that time, I was looking for a venue, caterer, band..the works! Dan from BAPS! responded to my need for a caterer right away. He was positive and responsive, and worked (and re-worked) with me on a prospective menu, knowing that I may end in a venue with an in-house caterer. He stayed in touch while I went through the process of vetting venues, and gave me great sightseeing tips for my trip to San Diego to do walk-throughs. We ended up booking a restaurant venue and won't hire an outside caterer, but I would have loved to hire and work with BAPS!. They'll stay on my "A-list" for my next event in the San Diego area.

Dave and his team did a fantastic job catering our event of 300 guests. They were even able to accommodate a last minute addition of 75 extra meals! They were prompt, professional, and friendly. Dave was very easy to work with on the contract and menu, and provided a meal that accounted for food allergies. I highly recommend Dave and Steal Your Taste Catering for any event, large or small.

I hired Stevan for a networking event. I requested a mix of hors d'oeuvres, as I had no particular theme in mind. Some of my favorite items were Stevan's hummus blend on endive (so fresh, delish!), his kalua sliders were excellent (the jam was to die for!), ribs were seasoned/sauced well, juicy and perfectly sized for our event. I'm not a seafood or sushi fan, but I cautiously tried Stevan's sriracha yellowtail and it was superb! He taught me that fresh fish shouldn't taste or smell fishy - and boy was he right! He also created a signature cocktail (gin and hibiscus) that was so refreshing! Stevan provides professional service with smile, he's very passionate about his work. Overall, the food was excellent, the presentation was quite impressive, and I confidently recommend Stevan for any event, large or small.

Carly showed up on time (both for set-up and tear-down), helped clean up, and even left us with food to take home. She was friendly and professional with multiple people asking who catered the event. I wish I had photos of her food, but the food was unique and delicious. Highly recommended!

We've had the pleasure of welcoming Yapo into our home for 2 different catered events. Yapo's Home Catering was exquisite for both occasions, surpassing our already sky-high expectations. Not only was the food phenomenal, Yapo is a great guy to have around for the evening. Overall, a wonderful experience.

My mom had a family luncheon for about 20 people and Eva was absolutely wonderful. She was prompt and jumped in to help my mom in areas I hadn't originally asked her to do. My mom fell behind a little in the cooking of the meal and Eva stepped right in with an ease that showed her true professionalism. My mom really enjoyed her and he can-do attitude. All the relatives loved her and thought she was wonderful. I'd highly recommend Eva for any catering event you might wish to have. She is talented beyond what her profile says! We loved her!

The Royal Food Services Team exceeded our expectations and made our Mother's Day Brunch an enjoyable experience. Michael was very professional and easy to work with. The moment we selected this service, they immediately reached out to discuss details for our event, and provided excellent suggestions that we had not thought of. As we approached the event, Michael scheduled an onsite visit to go through a dry run of the event and ensure no detail was overlooked. We discussed the menu, expectations and any additional special requests. The day of the event went without a hitch. Set up was quick and easy, the team was very professional, friendly and catered the guests every request. When they were ready to wrap up, they closed everything down, cleaned up, did all dishes and cleaned the floor and made sure everything was the way they had found it. I cannot express how pleased we were with this service, they enjoyed supporting our event and it is apparent they take pride in their service. I will absolutely use Royal Food Service again without hesitation, and without considering another provider. Thank you Michael and Travis for making out Mother's Day Celebration a great one to remember!!!

Julianna was very professional in setting up all details of our event and gave a discount for the number of people we had at our event. She wrote out a very detailed contract to what would be served, time they would arrive to set up and to start serving our guests. She went over and beyond when she included a sweet and special treat for our daughter that was a spectacular surprise, Chocolate Covered Strawberries at no additional charge! Jorge the chef's meat was amazing and all the fixings! In addition they served quesadillas as an appetizer and Julianna brought them out on a tray to serve our guests! She also made a menu and asked for a pic to include! Like I said she went over and beyond! Everyone enjoyed the food, service and people! All wanting to use this company for their catering needs! Thank You Takobar!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
