I hired Jose to install a new light fixture. This required new wiring. Jose was professional from beginning to the end. He came on time and did a through review of the job to provide an estimate. Light fixture required drywall work. Jose did a professional job in patching and painting the wall. He made the wall look nothing happened. Moving forward, he is the only guy I would recommend and hire. If you are looking to hire an electrician, he is your guy. Don't even bother wasting your time with anyone else.

Jose came out and did a fantastic job. I've been remodeling homes for a long time, and have worked with many contractors, and he is one of the better ones I've worked with.

Brian did a good job! You should hire him for your next job. - Communication: Great. He was very responsive on Thumbtack, and clear with pricing in his reply. Also ongoing scheduling communication after hiring (text) was responsive and clear also. - He was prompt (even a bit early) for the appointment. - After a quick tour of the room, he began to setup and get to work preparing the surface and protecting my belongings. - He meticulously prepared the surfaces (caulking corners, filling holes, sanding down spots, removing hardware), and the result of doing so was good. - He was respectful of my things (all of my personal belongings including laptops, phones etc. were there). - He brought/used all his own equipment including a fan to dry between coats. - I bought the higher quality Dunn-Edwards paints he recommended and it worked out well for both of us. He let me use his contractor discount. - Color choice support, though admitting not his strength, he used his girlfriend's great sense of color to help me narrow down my color. - He did at least two coats and painted the doors and trim too. - He worked for about 7 hours straight including setup/teardown, and came back and finished for 3 additional hours (a la carte).

If I could select 5 areas instead of just 3 that I liked about Dave, I would! If you have the opportunity to hire Dave, consider yourself lucky. You’ll feel completely at ease that your project will happen on time and on budget with good communication. And having been a builder hiring and managing contractors for some 10 years on and off...this kind of contractor is rare. I first hired Dave to install the 22 windows in my new construction project. That went extremely well. Then I hired him to paint the house. I wasn’t ready as scheduled and he handled it professionally with understanding. We started 2 days later and he hit it hard. Then I hired him to complete the drywall, mud and tape for 1000sf. Those walls are perfectly smooth...no texture...straight corners. Then he tiled a bathroom with 2’ x 6” tiles and adjoining pebble stone mesh tile. IT IS PERFECT. When the last task was taking longer than expected, Dave’s wife and son jumped in and worked until 11pm to finish when promised. As I say, if you’re reading this then count yourself lucky to have happened across Dave.

Hired Larry to patch stucco along the foundation, and to cap a block wall. He did the work as requested at a fair price, with little mess to clean up. Color was not exact (trying to match 10-year-old stucco), but he went to the extra effort to spray dye to blend in the work, which helped. Appreciated him enough that we also hired him to complete a wall texturing job another contractor on Thumbtack was ill-equipped to perform. He did adequately on that work, but worked with us to ultimately get us a satisfactory product. Nice to work with. Thanks, Larry!

As the Project Manager for an upgrade to a condo for resale, I hired Emmy Hyde to do the work. She did a great job! Her attention to detail was impressive and she was very easy to work with. As an Interior Designer, I work with a lot of contractors who assume I know nothing about their trade and often condescend or disregard my opinion. On the contrary with Emmy, even though she knows her trade well. Will definitely hire her again.

Antonio was one of the best contractors I've ever hired. He replaced a section of chain link fencing with wood fencing on a property I just purchased. He was very pleasant, knowledgable, efficient, and courteous. He came exactly on time, updated me every day regarding progress, and cleaned up after he was finished. All this at a very reasonable rate. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Antonio again!

Brandon met me at Lowes at 8:30am to pick up supplies. We got to my house around 09:15. He fixed a broken kitchen cabinet. He painted my bathroom including the trim around the window. He hung a Venetian blind in my 2nd bdrm. He replaced my old toilet with a new and improved version. All four of these tasks were part of the estimate. Brandon also unclogged my bathroom sink-not part of the estimate- he just did it. Brandon was finished around 3:45pm. He knew all the tricks that help a contractor save time, but still get the job done correctly. I am extremely happy with the results and definitely will be using Brandon for future jobs. Thanks Brandon! Mark Gonzales

The good: Quality work at a great price. Meticulous attention to detail. Hard worker. Knowledgeable. The bad: Travis and I agreed on a price after he spent about 15-20 minutes looking over the job site. He gave me a quote for labor and we went and I bought the supplies for him. A couple days later when he was supposed to start the job he told me that he had underbid the job and that he needed to charge me more. I told him I didn’t appreciate that and that we had already agreed and shook hands on a price. He agreed that he should honor his word but I ended up meeting him in the middle because I don’t want my contractors to do a bad job or hold a grudge. He also was unable to finish by the agreed upon end date and we had to push what was supposed to be a 7 day job out another 4 days. Travis also underestimated the amount of supplies he needed so I had to purchase more paint and primer for him to finish his job. Despite these setbacks, I would hire Travis again for future jobs. He is a good guy that does great work. He just underestimated his physical condition and his attention to detail causes him to take longer than he thought he needed. These are good qualities. I told Travis that had he quoted me the same all in cost I ended up paying and told me the actual timeframe it took him, I would have hired him and he would have a 5 Star glowing review now. I would recommend him to any other user just make sure he has sufficient time to get the job done and make sure the agreed upon price is non negotiable.

Daryn did a wonderful job on the taping, mud, and texturizing of our new walls. He had a tough job since our Sheetrock vendor (not related to Daryn) left some large gaps between the wall and angled ceiling for him to repair. He did an amazing job problem solving how to best approach the issues. Daryn was efficient, hardworking, and kept his work area clean and tidy. He charged us a reasonable, fair price, showed up when he said he would and completed the project within the time he quoted. Most of all, Daryn was respectful and kind. Hire him!!!

Wish I could give 10 stars. We've had multiple contractors working on our project - I only wish they could all be as good as Rudy. He was fair and honest, worked quickly, showed up exactly when he said (actually early) and was clean and careful in the process. Would def work with him again.

As a former contractor from Chicago I was very impressed with Jay's knowledge, skills and professionalism. Having a contractor come into your home is different than when doing an industrial or commercial project, a homeowner needs to feel comfortable with a contractor since it is your home. Jay has that positive kind of presence when working in your home which is important. We have more work to be done in our home in the future and we will look forward to working with Jay on our next project. We would highly recommend he and Frank's Boyz to anyone.

I highly recommend Daniel. He responded to our requests immediately and was able to show up the following day to do all our repairs. The previous contractor I had tried to hire didn't show up or call back for 2 days. Great job Daniel!

We wanted to get crown molding installed along with a trayed ceiling. Although none of the contractors knew exactly what we wanted, Frank worked with us to turn the image in our mind into reality. He got the job because, as a general contractor, he has the skill, manpower and equipment available to do multiple jobs like electrical work and cabinet work (our job also involved drywall and painting work). So, although the project started as a simple crown molding job, we got a lot of other things taken care of. Franks and his crew was very friendly and professional. They were very responsive to our requests and worked to make us happy. For example, we wanted to have Plexiglas installed in a cabinet door. After he did this (in his shop) he didn't think that we would like the result, so he installed a dark glass panel instead. We were very pleased with the result. In fact, we were so pleased that we are hiring them again for another job. I highly recommend Ruiz Construction Co.

Nationwide Secure did the tile flooring and sink installation for my bathroom. By far, they have been the most responsive and professional company out of all contractors I have hired. From time of thumbtack post to job completion was one week, and throughout, Nationwide Secure was straightforward and an overall pleasure to work with. I could not be happier with my finished bathroom. My initial bathroom setup was a bit awkward, but Robert did some creative work with the tiles to make the finished product look good. During the work, there was also some dry rot on the walls that he removed free of charge, just to do a thorough and complete job. The end product was stunning. Thanks Robert!

GW Construction helped me with a remodel. The job consisted of uprighting a 12 ft. support beam and approximately 25 drywall panels. The price was a lot less than other contractors that bid on the job and they completed the job in one week. Matt and Jody communicated with me on a daily basis asking how the job was going. They were absolutely dedicated to my satisfaction. The contractors that worked on the project were professional and made me laugh all day long. They even let me know when they saw a better idea for my remodel or saw something that we needed to tweak to make it look better. No fuss, no hassle, no problems. Matt gives you his price and sticks to it, even if something comes up and a little more work needs to be done. Overall a great experience and a job well done!

I though John communicated very well during our construction project. He was very flexible on any changes. Most contractors are very flaky; not showing up on time or wanting to get paid before the project is completed. You will not go wrong hiring John. He is top shelf.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
