When you decide to book them the contract has a clause that you must tip 20%. It's mandatory. We would have tipped anyway but I just didn't like that it was in the contract. Also if you pay by credit card it's an additional 5% fee. The team arrived 10-15 minutes early and got started right away. They start by having you sign a maximum amount that the price should not exceed. We moved from a tri level 2 bdrm 2.5 bath in SSF to 2 story home in San Jose. I am pregnant so I couldn't finish packing but they offered packing services also which we took advantage of. You just have to pay for the hourly rate, of course. They also provided wardrobe boxes, wrap your furniture for you, disassemble and reassemble your furniture, which was a huge plus. They were making good time until they thought they finished loading the truck. We still had a quarter of the kitchen we wanted them to pack and move for us. They ran out of boxes due to a miscommunication between myself and the owner. So we decided to pause for lunch and they went to get more boxes. We offered to go to Home Depot close by but I guess it's in their policy that they need to provide their own boxes (unless you had them already). They didn't charge us for the lunch time. The guys are a good team. I would definitely refer them but you just need to be clear in what you need/want from them. I could have been more prepared and clearly communicate with the owner. We didn't mind paying the additional time. As long as we did the move at one time, that was all we cared about and they were able to get the job done after some negotiation.

Working with Two Friends Movers was incredible! They showed up on time and immediately started getting to work packing everything efficiently and meticulously. We hadn't finished putting everything in boxes yet but they helped us pack and brought the right equipment and extra tape and boxes. They unpacked everything at our new place carefully without damaging a single item. Payment was super easy (they accept credit cards for an extra 4%). From start to finish, it only took 4 hours to move our entire apartment. And they did this in the rain! I highly recommend working with these guys!

I hired Albion Moving and Storage for my move on my first home. They came on time (early even!) and was very responsive with any questions or concerns I had. I was stressed with working and packing, but their 2 man crew moved everything I needed so quickly. I have extremely narrow stairs in my new home and they did not make a scratch on it. I'm very impressed with their efficiency and quality of work. Definitely would recommend to anyone and will reach out to them in any future moves!

Jeff and Jesus (Dan was not available) were simply fantastic. Very friendly and exactly what we needed. They showed up on time and unloaded our Relo packing cube, bringing everything into our new apartment. They were professional (came prepared with their own tools), and handled our items with great care. They even helped put together a few of our tables which was a big time and stress reliever. Would definitely work with them again!

So happy I chose to go with CTJ after extensive research. They were extremely professional, and communication was impeccable. They called to let me know they would be 30 minutes late in anticipation of traffic, but ended up arriving on time. They did a full walk through to go over everything they would be doing and how they would be packing and boxing my things. My furniture was very heavy and knowing that it was very valuable, they took extreme care of everything! Everything was brought to my new apt in perfect condition. They communicated clearly when moving every piece of furniture and each box to make sure it was placed exactly where we wanted it. From start to finish I didn't have to worry about a single thing. This is how moving should always be! Jonathan was the lead mover and with 2 other guys. All three were professional with great attitudes. To boot, it's all for a great cause.

Michael was very prompt and thorough in describing his services and he kept his word. I needed help packing up my stuff for a move while I was unexpectedly out of town. He put my mind at ease by packing everything up in a very organized and helpful manner. He listened to what I asked for but also operated independently. This put my mind at ease and took a huge weight off my shoulders. Definitely recommend!

I would highly recommend!! From the initial review of my household items and quote, to the pickup and the delivery - everything went as planned. The crew packing my belongings were polite, friendly, VERY efficient and took great care with everything - and logged every item I had before it went on the truck. At the delivery point, 500 miles away, the crew of two were prompt, friendly and once again, VERY efficient. They were super hard working and accommodating. I have moved at least eight times over the course of the years and these guys were without a doubt the best. There's no need to look elsewhere if you are considering hiring professional movers!

Madison Kane really came through for me. I had a friend on Medi-Cal who needed to move to a memory care facility. We needed to close her apartment in two weeks. Madison arranged sales of furniture and what not that paid for half the cost of the move. She sensitively saved the items of most emotional significance to my friend – photos, letters, momentous. The items of minor value we were able to give to charity. Madison identified key items to save, if we need to sell in the future, for my friends care. She did a full appraisal of all items and managed the online postings, sales, packing, and hauling. She got us the best price for key items and conducted several sales in a very short time. All hauling was done by Hauling Mike who brought the remaining items to several local charities in two runs. I was quite impressed. They worked incredibly hard. I didn’t really believe we could do this in two weeks! She and Mike where delightful to work with. Their sensitivity to my client was touching.

They were very punctual and quick in packing up several large items (china hutch, curio cabinet, recliners, etc.) we had moved to Tracy. Had several items with glass and nothing was broken or compromised! I would definitely use them again! They also hauled off two items to the dumps. Very convenient, the two services they offer!

I had to move all the contents of my entire classroom into a storage unit this past Thursday, July 19th. Six years of my life stuffed into small, medium and large boxes plus a bunch of plastic containers and miscellaneous. After 3 days of intense packing I was left with a few hours to search for a moving company and storage space. I was simply overwhelmed. That's when I came across Rafael and his wife Nara. They were the best thing that happened to me this past week. We agreed to meet at the school in South San Francisco at 9:00 am sharp. I arrived at 8:50 and found Rafael and Natalia already in full gear (padded gloves holding a dolly and blankets) waiting by the truck. They both greeted me with that strong handshake and warm smile so characteristic of Brazilians. I felt at home! After I showed them to my room and explained what I needed done they started carrying the boxes to the truck. They were diligent, extremely careful and professional. I was very impressed and relieved, as I had a painful experience with a moving company two years ago when we settled into our new home in Newark. When they were done storing all my items, Rafael informed me he made sure all the boxes were facing out so I could see their labels. That was something I was actually going to ask them to do, but ended up forgetting amidst all the commotion of saying goodbye to some of my work colleagues. The final touch was when Rafael asked me whether I was happy with the way he arranged the boxes inside the unit. I thought that was very thoughtful of him. They charged me a fairly reasonable price with no hidden fees. At the end, both parties were happy! I strongly recommend Rafael and Natalia's services and will definitely contact them again once I need my classroom supplies moved to a new classroom (which I hope will happen soon). Patricia M.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
