Karen was a wonderful guide when she was coaching me during a life transition. She was also very intuitive and perceptive when there were subtle tendrils of thoughts I didn't even fully express making their way into our discussions. She was very much there with me, even on the phone. Thank you, Karen!

I have been working with Mel for 9 months now, and the results are very apparent, both physically and mentally. I started working out with him at age 51 and I can safely say I was not in the best of shape. Mel showed me the proper way to transition carefully and efficiently into a regular workout routine that has had extremely positive results. The results have been very effective not only physically, but mentally as well. I feel energized in the morning when I start my day and the increased energy has provided a great boost to my busy professional schedule. He has a keen sense of individual needs as well as personal abilities and has helped me set goals that I am reaching every week. His knowledge of physical health and his professional attitude make the workouts something I look forward to. My only regret is that I didn’t start training with him years ago. Paul S.

Lynell and I have worked together for the past six months (and counting)! I have worked with other health coaches before and even professionally edited a holistic health coach book, but these coaches' knowledge pales in comparison to Lynell's knowledge and expertise. Lynell is very supportive and is very knowledgeable about health and fitness. However, she goes beyond just your average health coach that's out there. Her coaching comes from a psychological approach, including whole body wellness and stress management techniques, and the word "diet" (as in the starve yourself dieting to lose weight) does not exist when she works with you. She helps you create healthy habits from a goal-setting perspective that are both realistic and produce amazing results. As a result of working with Lynell, not only have I lost almost 20 pounds but I have more energy and feel more focused and organized in my life, especially with my career path. I'm a freelance copywriter who works from home and Lynell has really helped me to really hone into my career goals as well as my personal health and wellness goals. Lynell also has a background working with diabetic clients and is very knowledgeable about diabetes and how to be heart-healthy. She is dedicated to helping her clients prevent heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. She has helped me focus on my sodium intake. In the past, I had issues with on-off again high blood pressure and with Lynell's help and assistance, I've been able to keep my numbers at a healthy range. There is a lot of confusion out there about nutrition and healthy eating and there is a LOT of misinformation on the internet. Lynell's approach is realistic and works in "real life." She doesn't set you up to fail and she's there every step of the way with you. Lynell concentrates on the basics of nutrition so you don't feel overwhelmed. She walks you step-by-step through the goal-setting process and encourages and supports you during each coaching session which gives me confidence and feels like I'm not alone in my health and wellness journey. I'm 44 years old and am dealing with perimenopausal symptoms. Lynell is very empathetic and has shared invaluable tips and information about the types of foods and nutrition I should focus on for healthy balanced hormones. As a woman, I feel like she really "gets" what I'm going through and really listens. I highly recommend working with Lynell. If you feel like you are spinning out of control and don't know how to get your health back on track or want to exercise but don't know where to start, definitely hire Lynell for her coaching sessions. She's an amazing coach and is a very positive and uplifting person who always see the bright side in every situation!

Nancy has a very confident demeanor about her, which always makes me feel relaxed every time I visit her office. I have been working with Nancy intermittently for a little over a year now. I initially came to her for depression because I was feeling stuck in my career. She has also helped me to stop biting my nails as well and a few other habits I won't mention. I always feel relaxed and peaceful after a session.

I worked with Leslie for over a year in her role as a professional life coach. During this time, we explored deeply the internal and external resources necessary for making the many life transitions I faced. Leslie has many gifts. She is extraordinarily intuitive and empathetic. Her intelligence and wisdom are beyond her years. She is very knowledgeable about her work. One of her exceptional abilities is to use metaphors to name and describe that which emerges in a session. The metaphors serve as a way of thinking differently about a problem or concern and taking action to improve. I looked forward to each and every session. They were always powerful learning experiences.

I have had the privilege of working with Melissa Kirk starting in January of 2014. I knew I wanted to make a career change and had been bored for about 2 years. I just did not know how this would change my life. She started with my my hand analysis, which goes into great detail what your lives purpose is. Keep in mind you actually have to do some work yourself, but she guides you every step of the process with her personal coaching which I highly recommend. It is now May 2014 and I quit my job and started a new career in real estate thanks to all of the work we did together. She's even helping me out with contacts as she's very well connected throughout the east bay. She changed my life dramatically! Thank you Melissa

Laura’s IN-Vizion sessions and her intuitive insight helped me to see where I was blocking abundance and prosperity in my life from my past that was holding me back. I was amazed at how powerful the IN-Vizion session could be. It was such a beautiful journey that allowed me to step into my power while opening me to my guides. She has given me the confidence to step into our business and be more confident of the choices I make. I am now on a refreshing, creative and healthy path filled with love and manifestation! I can fully let go of the anger and fear that I have held onto for so many years about money and am convinced this is because of Laura’s direction through the IN-Vizion process. I highly recommend it to all who are battling their own fears and want to improve their life and well-being.

Before working with Nancy, I felt "stuck" and needed the tools to grow my business. After our first coaching session I had such a sense of hope, direction and excitement. She is so authentic, genuinely cares and the accountability she provides is invaluable. I highly recommend Nancy to anyone looking for practical steps for growth, a sense of purpose and a clearer vision of your career.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

      What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

      • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
      • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
      • Defining your career goals
      • Creating a plan for job searching
      • Improving networking strategies and skills
      • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
      • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
      • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

      Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

      • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
      • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
      • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
      • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
      • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
      • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
      • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
