I have been having weekly Spanish lessons from Spanish55 for almost 2 months now. I greatly appreciate the one on one lessons with my Spanish coach and how each week we are able to take on new subjects. What I have been learning will help me both in my work life and social life. I highly recommend giving Spanish55 a try!

Lynne is great! I was unsure about trying yet another Spanish tutor, but it was necessary as my girls were not doing well with the never ending train of substitute teachers the school was giving them for their class. Lynne brought it all together so that it made sense and my girls could finally get some continuity. I don't know what we would have done with out her. In just a couple of weeks they were on track and their grades were back up where they should have been. Lynne didn't even need to know what the class was doing, she spoke with my girls and started to build on what they knew. It worked and we are very happy.

I do not take Spanish lessons from Rosa, but attend the Club De Lectura book club. I love it! Rosa keeps the discussion going by excellent questions, but never takes over. She also gives us important information about the authors we read in order to enhance our understanding. I am the poorest Spanish speaker in the group, but my opinions are never made to feel less valuable. I love just hearing the good Spanish of the other members and learning more each week. I would recommend any endeavor presented by Rosa most highly. You won't be disappointed!

I had the pleasure of learning Spanish with Edd Chango while in high school. He is an extremely knowledgable teacher who understands the content he teaches as well as the history behind it. It's abundantly clear that he cares about his students and the progress they make. Edd has a kind, gentle nature that makes his students feel comfortable and at ease while learning. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

Pura Buena Onda is the best option for continuing to improve your Spanish skills. PBO is a great option for people who have taken some Spanish in the past and just need to practice, practice, practice. Caro does a phenomenal job of making sure the classes are fun and everyone gets a chance to speak and learn. Class sizes are small - no more than 6 people - so you are guaranteed to walk away feeling your Spanish has improved. Me encanta PBO!

I've been having tutoring sessions with Elena for the last couple of weeks now and I can already see an improvement in my ability to understand and speak Spanish. She's a highly knowledgeable and patient tutor, and even when I make a mistake, she'll explain what to say and then connect it back to what we're already talking about. In that way, Elena is also really thorough, and makes sure that I understand a concept before moving on to something new. I also found her teaching style to be unique and really helpful, in that we'll actually have a conversation in Spanish, which would lead to a lesson or how to fix this or that. Although somewhat unorthodox, I found it extremely helpful, since I not only learn grammar, or verb conjugation, but I actually get to practice what I learned in real conversation. Since I've always been one to focus on the real applications of things, using real conversation is really helpful and makes the lessons all the more engaging and exciting. The pacing of lessons is also really nice and I'm often surprised by how much we actually cover in an hour. She´s the best Spanish tutor I've ever had and I'd highly recommend her to anyone trying to learn or become better at Spanish.

My daughter started taking private lessons from Patricia a month ago and we can already see a great improvement in her language skills. Patricia has excellent teaching techniques and the student is immersed in the French language from the very beginning. She uses different teaching methods including short movies and books (in French only); which make the class more dynamic and entertaining for young students. We are very pleased with Patricia and the results obtained thus far.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
