I hired Arash Ghiasi to help me both with interior design ideas, and with the management and organization of the whole project. I am sure I will follow up with another review while the project is over, but there is a lot I can say even at this initial stage of the project. If you are looking for someone enthusiastic, inspired and inspiring, energetic and very knowledgeable, Arash is the interior designer you are looking for. He has already helped us a lot with space organization and colour selection, and the overall image of our space. As an artist (a painter) myself, I know quite a deal about color, and I can tell you -- Arash knows what he is doing when he chooses or suggests colors, and he has this rare ability to "synchronize" his thinking with your own feelings and ideas, which is is absolutely essential for an interior designer. The whole process was smooth, quick, and inspiring. As for the space organization, he offered us a solution for an area we've been struggling with for years. And it had a hallmark of all excellent design solutions: it felt completely right and (kind of) obvious when he suggested it. How could we not find it ourselves??? But the truth is, we didn't -- even though a lot of thinking went into it. All in all, we are very impressed with his work, his ideas, and his energy. I would recommend him to any friend who is looking for an interior designer.

Our property was due for an opening house in a week and we desperately needed staging in a short notice. We came across Shocase Staging on Thumbtack and contacted Juel and James. They promptly came over for a competitive quote and we chose them based on their portfolio and great customer service. We will definitely be using them again for their modern furniture and interior design.

Michelle was absolutely amazing! When we first met she instantly "heard" my needs! She listened to my concerns and was able to bring creative ideas to bring new life to our dated home. She made me feel that my job was her top priority, her communication was extremely prompt. Her vision, knowledge and skill are top notch. Michelle's amazing design style, enthusiastic attitude and 100% BEAUTIFUL transformation was easy and exciting and all while keeping my budget conscious husband in mind! Our projects included picking paint, new fabrics and furniture. Michelle was able to repurpose some family heirlooms and existing pieces but all with incorporating new styles. Everyday we wake up pleased with the investments we have made with Michelle's creativity and design. We feel as if our home has increased with value every time she has walked through our door. We no longer avoid rooms we enjoy being in them! Thank you Michelle for helping us achieve our vision with your great taste and unique talent for interior design!

This is my first time working with an interior decorator. I hired Brooke to help me design my living room. We just bought a new house and are trying to mix the older furniture with the new. Brooke, came in, assessed the situation, took pictures and measurements then came back the following week with a whole presentation including 2 different looks. She seemed to really understand my taste and put it all together nicely. She also offered to bring some samples to the house so we can see what it will look like in the room before I purchase them. I'm excited to see the room when it is complete. Brooke has been awesome to work with so far and I plan to continue to use her services! I highly recommend Brooke. She's extremely reasonable when it comes to cost and definitely goes above and beyond.

Over the years, James has designed the interior of three homes for me! I can honestly say, he embodies the meaning of professionalism - organized, accountable, responsive, and he works with so much integrity, which is an incredibly important value to me. And, he is probably the most talented designer I have ever encountered! Each time, he stayed within my budget, went out of his way to make things work when I gave him seemingly impossible restrictions, and always delivered what I needed in a timely fashion that exceeded my aesthetic expectations. For my most recent home, I gave him a very specific budget and a "beachside cottage" concept. He found every piece of furniture for me within my budget, and even helped me lay out exactly where my existing artwork could go. The deliverable was so methodical, comprehensive and sensibly laid out. He had thought of everything! When people visit my home, they always comment on how aesthetically calm and beautiful it is to be in the space, but also how logically the furniture and art arranged. I couldn't have done this without him and would recommend him to anyone. His talent surpasses boundaries. His creativity and imagination are so robust that he is able to conceive of such a diversity of concepts. I am so impressed by him and thankful for all his help over the years. Not only has he made my moving and designing processes less stressful, he has made my life and living space more beautiful! Thank you, James!

I bought an old house 100 years old. in Chico California.. The house had 2 small narrow funny bedrooms and one bathroom. Floor plan seems hard to deal with since it was 980 sq. ft narrow long shape floor plan. I did not want to add more space or to move any exterior walls it seems almost impossible to change this floor plan and to get a decent floor plan.. I hired Rummy dechner to do the design work and to create a new floor plan with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. very unique and very challenging situation I must admit. I was impressed with the design Rummy Dechner create. The new Design have 3 beautiful bedrooms with 2 bathrooms Nice big kitchen open to a nice living room. Rummy dechner help me with the selection and interior design of the kitchen as well. This great design gave me the opportunity to rent this house for much more money then A similar house with 3 bedrooms in the neighborhood. I am very happy with the new home and appreciate very much the design, and the great services I got from Rummy Dechner.

After raising a family and moving cross country, we recognized that our old furniture no longer fit our lifestyle or locale. Cynthia assisted us to create an urban retreat that matched our new downtown living with the relaxing ambiance we desired. Not only did she aesthetically transform the space but she also guided us through addressing a number of quirky space limitations that always come with the purchase of an older home. Now when I return home--whether from a day at the office or a business trip--I enter a space that allows us to both relax alone and socialize with friends. She perfectly met our desire for something that is both elegant and comfortable.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

        • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
        • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
          • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
        • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
          • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
        • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
        • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
