Very respectful of our home. Did a good job and took care of our needs. We sprung an extra chandelier hanging on him and he just added $60 to the price for us. He knows what he is doing and would hire again.

My home needed some major plumbing fixes and AM Plumbing did a great job on everything. My tankless water heater needed flushing and all the valves in my home needed replacing to fix my water pressure. They also installed a water filter to prevent the valves from becoming blocked again. I definitely would recommend them to anyone needing any plumbing fixes.

Matthew helped fix a door that was sticking in my bedroom. He was very meticulous about his work and showed incredible craftsmanship. His attention to customer service is unparalleled. His rates are very reasonable. He was prompt and super-friendly throughout the project. He has much experience working on very high-end home projects, much beyond mine. But what I appreciated is he was able to apply his learnings and high bar of craftsmanship to a very small project that I needed done...at a very reasonable rate. I'll be working with Matthew much more in the future!

PKS was able to come out the day after I posted on Thumbtack and resolve the electrical issue at my grandmother's house in a timely and professional manner. And they charged us a fair price. They worked quickly and restored the power to my grandmother's home after a small fire left her without electricity for days. I am grateful for their service.

Bogdan was a gift. He and his team installed ~2000 SQft of Bamboo Hardwood floors, a marble entry way, tile floor in the laundry room and bath, built a tile shower from scratch, matched and installed granite in a half bath and full guest bath, and repaired several small but important plumbing issues along the way. Bogdan was respectful and considerate of our priorities. He worked with us with patience, always checking in to make sure we were happy with the choices and installation. For example, he was able to create a seamless transition between the tile and hardwood and marble that made a big difference in how the flooring flows- no tripping on t-moulding ! I would happily recommend Bogdan for home improvement projects.

Richard Hynes is a very detailed professional. Upon meeting Richard I felt comfortable about the project. We originally wanted to order materials for the project and he had suggested to me that he would order any materials and provide us with the receipts. Luckily we let him order the material as it turns out the ones we wanted to order were undersized for our project. Richard came and seismically retrofitted our home. He also helped us on our kitchen and bathroom remodels while managing the project the whole way, hiring subs, coordinating between myself and subcontractors and achieving the results desired. Richards pricing was 20% cheaper compared to licensed professionals in the area. We are so glad to have had his help, as the previous worker we hired from thumbtack turned out to be unlicensed at a cheaper price, but ended up costing us a lot more money in the long run.

Amazing company. Family owned business that did an amazing work on a painting and flooring installation. Worked with Ricky and he was just a pleasure to work with. Super responsive, very reasonable with price. He did a great job setting expectations and the job was finished ahead of schedule! I really appreciated his dedication to quality and was quick to spot and correct anything that wasn't up to his standards (which were higher than my own!). Great company and would definitely hire them again.

Juan and his assistant installed a security grill which was complicated by the fact that my wood door needed to be cut and re-hung to open inwards. I was thrilled, first off, that Juan was willing to do the job, since a couple other people I spoke with wanted me to buy a new door. Juan responded very quickly, answered all my questions, and was very professional and clear with his quote. His price was extremely fair, a bargain really, and he was able to accommodate my schedule and stay in touch via email. They worked very cleanly, covering the deck and floors, and tenting off the kitchen with taped plastic. The work went very quickly and smoothly. Juan needed to tweak a few things in order to make everything fit, so the finished product has some tiny flaws. Aesthetically and functionally, though, the doors are exactly what I wanted and expected for my slightly funky older home. I would definitely hire him again.

Kris responded promptly to my project request. And even though we decided to move forward with a wooden retaining wall, instead of a concrete wall, he offered great advice on how to improve the waterproofing and longevity of the wood wall. I appreciate his professionalism and wouldn’t hesitate to contact Kris for future home improvement projects.

I originally contacted Osbaldo for a bid on painting and I ended up hiring him for the job plus some! He painted the whole interior of our home, replaced our counter tops with granite, replaced our kitchen sink, and put up our beautiful backsplash in the kitchen. I can't thank him enough for working with my crazy schedule and for doing such a great job. He's very trustworthy, respectful, hardworking, takes pride in his work, and his quotes are very reasonable. He also communicated well from the beginning and that's one of the reasons why I hired him in the first place. I'll definitely be calling him for our future home renovations!

We hired MJH Construction Management to complete renovations of our recently purchased home. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, MJH determined the best solutions to a number of complex repairs and additions including floor leveling, heating, plumbing and electric. MJH helped us choose several improvements like changing the floor plan for better use of space, installing a gas fireplace as well as a bathroom and kitchen upgrade. MJH oversaw the contractors to ensure the work was completed and billed correctly. Throughout the process MJH kept us apprised of the costs and schedule - there were no surprises. We are delighted with the results - our renovated house came out fantastic.

*Warning long winded, but detailed review* True pleasure working with this professional. I had a whole house fan project which was going to be tricky logistically, as my home is designed a bit differently. He was able to advise me of the best way to have the fan installed, took time to show me the condition of my attic and gave a very accurate assessment of the time it would take to complete the project. And while that may not seem extraordinary, he did all that via video call as I was unable to leave my place of business in time to meet him at my home in time! (Wife was home to let him in.) His expertise was on display as he improvised and thought through future maintenance accesibilities during the install. I really appreciated that because in the event of equipment failure, the time and associated costs to reach, then service my units components would have been a challenge if installed in a typical way. At the end of the job, he stayed to help me configure and troubleshoot a wifi component that I purchased to work with the fan which was great to have two minds address the not so user friendly setup. He made sure to clean up the work area and listened to me as I asked for his opinion on other household repairs I would like to tackle next. Which brings me to the final and most impressive part of my experience. He noticed an eve on the house that was leaning and inquired about it. I showed him a similar issue with the backyard awning which I thought looked bad and should be replaced eventually. After he looked at it, he demonstrated why it wasn't just ugly - but dangerous! Without asking or upcharging, he got his ladder and a few lagbolts and secured a part of the awning just enough to ensure safety until I could get it fully repaired. I cant recommend his services enough to anyone out there needing his wide range of services. I will be working with him on all of my home and business projects to come. Great experience and job well done!

Oscar was easy to contact. We had 6 holes from some complicated plumbing and electrical work that had been done in our home, many in hard to work in areas where getting access seemed close to impossible for us. I sent him pictures of the drywall needing to be patched. We made an appointment on Friday with him for Saturday at 8AM and he was right on time. We walked through the house talked obout our expectations and he pointed out some problematic issues about our electrical and plumbing, offering choices on how he could proceed. He went right to work, and worked really hard for over 4 hours then he was done. We are thrilled with the results, he matched our existing textured walls perfectly, no small feat. All our drywall looks original now, not patched. His fee was entirely reasonable if not an outright bargain. When he left there was some very small clean up to do on our end. Removing tape after everything dried. We wiped down a counter a bathroom floor where some drywall dust had wandered. We expected this and knew we were not paying for “white glove” service where a team enters in cotton booties leaving every surface dustless. I would not hesitate to use him again, and would recommend him highly, unless your the type of client that appealed at the idea dusting up some very small area. He is a true professional. We got a quote on what it would cost to detexture our home, which was higher than we hopped, but then he pointed out all sorts of details we hadn’t thought of that it would take to get a perfect finish and it totally made sense. When we decide to go ahead with that job he’ll definitely be the guy we use.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
