Pete has been helping us with our very energetic and curious black lab for about the past ten months. He has come to our house for trainings and we have been able to join him and our pup on training walks. Pete helps train our pup and also takes him on dog walks 3x a week. Pete's walks are no ordinary walk in the park! Our pup could be on an outing up in the trails or could have spent the afternoon swimming!! Our pup loves Pete and is always excited to head off on an adventure with him. We have also been able to board our pup with Pete which was a great experience as we knew our pup would be loved and cared for exceptionally well. We are fortunate to have found a skilled and caring dog trainer!

Logan was great to work with. Our family enjoyed learning how to train our new puppy. He was able to teach us how to walk our puppy, we’ve been trying for weeks now. Looking forward to see results. Logan was great with our puppy and the kids, very professional and comes with lots of experience!

Les is wonderful. He had new training skills for us to work on each time. He is very friendly and structures the training on what you decide is important for your dog. He would make sure I was walking or training my pup correctly before each session was over. If didn't quite train our dog enough by our next session, Les never made me feel guilty:) I recommend Executive Canine Services for a positive training experience!

Rusty has exceeded above and beyond my hopes for a trainer. After our first complimentary consultation for him to assess my pups behavior as well as for me to assess whether Rusty was the right trainer for us, I knew I had landed on one of the best. He possesses an incredible wealth of knowledge that he conveys efficiently and proficiently giving you the tools to truly carry over the work done in the sessions to every day life with your dog. He is professional, patient, and creative in his training, not to mention a true dog whisperer. While I originally sought Rusty's guidance for foundational obedience training and separation anxiety, it evolved to using him to assist in the journey of training my pup to be a therapy dog. Along the way, my dog suffered an traumatic experience while under the care of a sitter and adopted fear behaviors that had not existed before. I called Rusty right away for advice and help. We adjusted our sessions to address the immediate concerns so they would not become permanent. He was a complete blessing and my pup is successfully on the mend. Rusty is so well-versed in many areas of dog-training (he's your one-stop shop!) Whether you need short-term assistance, long-term, or varying areas of concerns, look no further. You don't need to take my word for it, just take advantage of the complimentary consultation and see for yourself. Absolutely no regrets here.

My Newfypoo pup Jelly Bean is a handful, especially considering I have never had a dog before. I was fortunate enough to stumble on John Vinton's site, after being dropouts from Sirius group puppy training. His technique is unique as he does not advocate stuffing the dog with never ending treats. Instead, consistent reinforcement of commands accompanied with appropriate overwhelming praise when deserved. We're only 3 lessons in. I am so proud of my Bean, especially when compared to other dogs we meet on our walks. We both still have a lot to learn and with the help of "A Better Dog Trainer" I know we'll be successful.

Maj really knows her stuff. I'm glad she's willing to work through things that are most convenient for me. It helps me focus on what I'm trying to accomplish with my dog, rather than all the other factors that prevented me from getting help to begin with (scheduling, fees for traveling, methods of communication, etc.). I chose her because of her background with rescues, years of experience, and number of people who have worked with her--and what they said. I have some experience with training my dog, and sometimes I have to be assertive and push through the explanations but I understand that Maj works with a lot of first timers. I'm also glad she is willing to skip the beginner steps and meet me at my level so that we don't drag out lessons my dog and I don't need.

Angela is a fun, quirky lady who really cares about your pup. My little pupper, Rufus, needed a haircut badly, but I could not get an appointment this week or drop him off to his regular groomer in the Fillmore next week. Angela made a house call yesterday and lugged all her gear to my apartment to give my dog a bath and haircut. I offered to help her since she went out of her way and didn’t have her regular assistant with her (also, it would have taken forever!) and let me tell you, if “assistant” grooming is that hard I can only imagine how exhausting the actual grooming is! With me helping her it took a little over 2 hours and it’s not like she took breaks or dragged anything on – my dog, a 22 pound Shih-Poo - took about 2 hours and 25 minutes for: nails, ears, glands, bathing, blow drying and a haircut. She really gets in there and makes sure the paws are on point. She is meticulous in her method and takes the time to assess what the best course of action is for your dog’s haircut. She switches blades often, making sure that she can get rid of matted fur without compromising your dog’s look or safety. Angela was super caring with Rufus, much like how I act with him. I would definitely recommend her skills!

I met Emily by chance walking our dog Stella. Stella is an American Staffordshire Terrier whom we rescued through the Peninsula Humane Society when she was 5 months old. They had found her running in and out of traffic. Stella is a sweet and loving dog, and full of lots of energy. Emily noted Stella and I walking, or I should say her pulling me as I tried to not let her pull me. Despite having her 2 years, we still didn’t have the training thing down. My partner and I had been looking for a trainer but for whatever reason, just never found the right person or took the time to jump into it. Walking with her through our neighborhood in SOMA could be a challenge, and I have to admit, kind of sucked. We were using a harness that clipped on the back. Emiliy advised that what I was doing was “literally how you train sled dogs” and advised a front lead harness. She gave me a card and made some recommendations of harnesses that I could find on line. The next day, I went and got a front lead harness and put it on Stella. OMG. Like a different dog. She wasn’t pulling and would actually walk beside me. I took a video and emailed my partner, and said “You won’t believe it!”. I called Emily and we hired her that day. The changes that we have seen in Stella have been unbelievable. We live in SOMA and went from a pulling dog who would bark at skateboarders, jump up on little kids, and eat everything on the ground (including homeless pooh – gross!) to a dog who is interactive with us, plays agility games (jumping up or standing on hydrants for a treat), backing up from children and sitting calmly for attention, totally ignoring skateboarders, and leaving homeless pooh and other things where they belong, on the ground. I am amazed that this is the same dog. What I love the most about Emily and her training is that her techniques are about management and engaging your dog. Stella is Stella. My partner and I don’t believe in shock collars, aggressive management or training your dog into submission. The first part of her life was hard enough, we want a relationship with our dog of trust and love. Emily understands and advocates this theory. Stella is who she is. She is still the happy, rambunctious, energetic dog who loves life, people, and other dogs. What Emily showed us is how to channel that energy into productive and fun ways of expression. The training has really built a closer bond with Stella and she is very focused on us as we walk. The walks have actually become really fun. The true test came last week up in Santa Rosa where we have a home in the country. Stella goes crazy over the wildlife (turkey, deer, rabbits, etc). She will often try to get out and chase them. A front door was inadvertently left open and Stella escaped from our home and ran down the driveway, near the cow pasture. This is a dangerous spot and she has run under the fence and chased the cows in the past. My partner said, “back up” from about 200 yards away. She stopped, turned, came running back up the driveway and sat at us feet. Unbelieveable. I highly recommend Emily! The money and time was worth the improved quality of life that we have with our family member, Stella.

Emily is fantastic! She began working with our 6 month old weim only 4 weeks ago, and he is already a different dog. He has learned to be better on the leash, developing better response to commands such as sit and stay. Emily truly listens to the needs of the family and is very responsive to the individual dog needs. She is dependable, responsible and when you meet her, you can just feel her passion and dedication to puppy training. She sent us regular daily updates about our puppy's progress, including video clips. When we first started, our puppy was shy of other dogs, but after only 2 weeks, he was braver and more assertive in the dog park with other pets. Emily is a pleasure to work with and we have just signed up for another 4 weeks of training to continue building on the progress our doggies has made. She is down to earth and caring. She is also not afraid to say when something isn't working, which we truly appreciated. Our dog didn't like the halti leash, so after a couple of weeks of training, Emily came up with a different leash option and was very honest about the reasons for the change. It's refreshing to work with such a professional. Thank you, Emily, for all your dedication and hard work!

Heather helped with obedience training my beagle, who is very stubborn. They did verbal commands, leash training, house training and manners, and Heather has had a lasting positive influence on my dog. She is very professional and thorough, and she brings real experience and methodology to create a personalized training outline, which helps maintain the behaviors. 10/10, would recommend again.

Gail is amazing! She walks Tucker 4+ days a week and is always on time, friendly and reliable. She sends daily videos and takes Tucker and his friends to different parks throughout the city. Additionally she has cared for him overnight at my house. I trust her 100% and am so lucky to have her care for my puppy while I am away. Happy to have her in my life and so is Tucker.

Sue has been working with me and my two min pins, Coco and Tootsie on behavior modification issues. I was at the point of contacting the breeder to give one of them back - basically at the end of my rope. I'd worked with other dog. trainers, but Sue explained and showed how to manage and modify behavior that was easy to comprehend and made sense. I am not exaggerating when I say she has literally changed my life and helped me rethink how to interact with my girls. I am very grateful.

If you're looking for help with your dog's obedience, socialization, manners AND you're also looking to understand your dog better- you're not just looking for any dog trainer, you're looking for Mahogany. She's an expert on leash reactivity and dog/dog and dog/people socialization. She is also the best at motivating dogs using play and rewards so that the training is something you can both look forward to. Mahogany is a trainer that other trainers learn from and train their dogs with! She's got an outstanding ability to see perspectives that other people miss. If you've already tried a couple of trainers and feel ready to give up because you really did what they said and it just isn't working out - call Mahogany. She really is amazing. She can diagnose where you're dog's issues are stemming from and help you get on the right track and stay there. She has the ability to motivate and she's also super on point when it comes to helping you understand and achieve what you need to do to help your dog in the situations where they're really struggling. Whenever I feel like I'm lacking judgment with my dog's behavior, if I'm struggling with a situation that I really want my dog to do well in, she's my go to person and her training always helps!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
