Installed two flat screen TV's using existing wall mounts. He was able to come out within 24 hours, he was on time, affordable, and efficient. Much better than hiring overpriced services such as the Geek Squad.

I hired Taylor mount a 60" flat screen TV above my fireplace. He was very responsive when discussing my needs and setting up the appointment for installation. Taylor showed up on time, was extremely personable, and walked me through everything he was doing during the process (I ask a lot of questions). The finished product looks great and I would highly recommend Taylor for your project! He will be my first and only call for future install needs!

For the past three years, our handy man Mike has built, re-built, repaired and/or installed a variety of things in our 50- year-old home and in our rental units. Most recently, when one of our old gates was splintering and falling off its hinges, Mike built a brand new wooden gate for us, saving us the time and money we would have had to spend ordering a custom made resin gate and waiting for delivery. He has also installed a huge flat screen TV on the wall in our den, a new medicine cabinet and a lighted vanity mirror in our master bathroom and a Boscsh double-oven in our kitchen. The new oven was slightly larger than the original one so Mike made the necessary changes in the cabinetry around it to make it fit nicely. In our rental units, he has installed new cabinets and made various repairs as needed. When it comes to fixing things, Mike consistently shows creativity, determination and skill. About two years ago our clothes dryer started making loud noises and the clothes were taking forever to dry. The sounds were similar to some we had heard a few years ago. At that time we had to call out an appliance repair man and a few hundred dollars later, the dryer was working again. This time we figured it was either another high repair bill or just buy a new dryer. We first called Mike though to see if he might be able to fix it. Mike researched the make and model year of our dryer and found the all the specifications and information he needed, including a complete diagram of the inside of our dryer. He then took apart the dryer and found that there were just one or two parts parts causing the problem. He bought the parts, came back and installed them, and put our dryer back together again! The dryer is still working nicely.

I can't say enough good things about John and the project that he completed for us. He installed our TV above the fireplace and hid the wires behind the wall (coming in from the outside), not an easy task considering the fireplace consists of decorative stone and granite (not flat concrete). In addition, John installed a mantel we had ordered for the fireplace. His rate was very fair, his attention to detail meticulous, and his character very personable. He does what he says and says what he does. He goes above and beyond in his work and his work is excellent. He does not charge extra for every nut, bolt, and wire the way some others do. A handyman might be able to install and mount your TV, but not many specialize in it like John does, not many have the same expertise. We cannot wait to recommend John to more people. He has earned our loyalty and we will be calling him for all future projects.

Totally honest, totally skilled, Ryan always delivers and always on budget (or less!). He's Re-balanced a ceiling fan for me, installed a fence in my side yard, hung a flat screen tv (with all wires expertly fished into the walls), and installed built-ins in my closet. This guy's the best. Hell even check in with me periodically to make sure his old work is still good. Can't recommend more highly.

First off, let me state that I consider myself pretty handy around a house, but I had a unique problem with the wall that I wanted to mount my new flat screen TV to and I just didn't have the tools or the know-how to do it right. Luckily, a friend referred me to Eric and he knew exactly how to get the job done for me. I could not have been more impressed with how clean the installation looked when he was through (no visible wires, perfect placement and balance.) Both times that I met with Eric, he was right on time, which made me very happy (tardiness is a pet peeve of mine, as my time is valuable and I hate when people that I am paying my hard-earned money to are not respectful of my time!) He was professional and easy to communicate with and, most importantly, I felt comfortable letting him inside my home. He was truly a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

I used Kermit, just over a year now, to set up a lot of Ikea furniture. He set up a ton of stuff right after we moved and I was out of town. We needed to set up a desk, a large dresser and a huge Besta unit that fits a flat screen tv. The unit was slightly custom assembled, as I dont believe it was totally meant to be assembled that way. The guys assembled everything perfectly. I recently moved and Kermit ,came back to reattach the large Besta TV wall unit. He was done in a flash and also mounted something else to my wall that he had built the previous time. The work was extremely professional and perfectly executed. For specific furniture, you can ask for an estimate/cost per piece or pay an hourly rate. Prices are very reasonable and saves you the agony and hours of pain trying to put some of this stuff together. I would highly recommend his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who wall mounts TVs?

Electricians, handymen and TV installation specialists may all provide television mounting services. The person who does the mounting should be qualified and knowledgeable about basic construction concepts as well as working with audiovisual cables. In general, no specialized certificates are required to provide television mounting services, but as always do your diligence and make smart hiring decisions.

It’s important to find an experienced professional who will ensure the TV wall mount meets building code. Most regions have fire codes that don’t permit high-voltage power cords behind walls (low-voltage wires like HDMI and video cables are generally acceptable). A basic wall mount on drywall may take approximately one to two hours, while more complex mounts on brick or stone with hidden cables can take three or more hours. If you need more electrical outlets installed near your entertainment system, you may want to hire an electrician. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you do with a broken LCD TV?

Nationally, the average price range for TV repair is $60-$90. LCD TV repairs are one of the most common TV repair requests. A liquid crystal display (LCD) TV uses the same technology as your smartphone and most computer screens. Images are created on an LCD screen by electric currents that pass or block light through liquid crystals that are encased between two polarized, glass-like sheets. LCD TVs can be very thin and are relatively affordable, making them one of the most prevalent types of TV on the market. If you have a broken LCD TV, it can probably be repaired. Common problems that can be repaired include a blank screen, sound issues, power problems and digital connection problems. Here is one example of LCD TV repair cost:

  • 55-inch Samsung LCD TV repair: $150, including parts and labor
    • The LCD was intermittently powering up and powering off. The main circuit board was removed and replaced.

Can you fix a flat screen TV?

Yes, you can usually fix a flat screen TV. Whether you have a plasma, LED, OLED, HDR, HD or even LCD, TV repair pros can repair your TV. Flat screen TVs are expensive, and when they stop working it can make your heart stop. But TV repair technicians have advanced along with TV technology and are equipped with the proper tools and training for major and minor repairs. If your flat screen is too massive to transport, most repair companies have pickup and drop-off service. For the most common problems, TV repair pricing might range between $175 and $200 on average. Here are examples of the most common problems:

  • Power problems: The TV won’t turn on or will not stay on once started.
  • Digital problems: All connections are in place but you’re not receiving any signal.
  • Sound problems: There is no sound, the volume doesn’t respond to attempts to raise or lower it, or the volume is inconsistent.
  • Screen problems: The TV is on but there is no picture.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.
