I am redoing my entire large backyard right now and needed someone to come and level the entire thing, scrap out the old lawn, lay wire mesh (to keep the gophers out), install new sod and update the existing sprinkler system. I had 4 people come and give me bids and after considering the options decided to go with Manny Tree Care. His bid was reasonable, competitive and after meeting and talking with him I felt he definitely listened to my plan and understood what I needed done. I am so pleased with the end result! They were able to start on my project within a week and it was completely finished in a week too! There were some small unforeseen complications with the sprinkler system but they were totally on top of it and came back to fix with no extra charge or hassle. They definitely stand behind their work. I would highly recommend them if you have a project that needs to be done.

Tony responded quickly to my request for someone to haul away unwanted BBQs & other metal debris from our yard. We were pleased that even though he was coming from Orange County to Riverside, he communicated when he would arrive, showed up when he said he would & charged a very reasonable price to haul it away. We will share our experience with neighbors both Thumbtack & Tony Chiha & 911EarthProject.

I had a huge job, lots of burned wood, heavy metal, old used equipment remnants, and lots of trash and lots of junk! Jim and his crew worked so hard, spending all the time that was needed to more than meet my expectations. Always on time, always professional, and very affordable. I will recommend this company to anyone who needs outstanding service for their clean up needs. Exceeded my expectations. My property was left raked and neat and looks soo awesome! I feel like I can breathe again.

My fence was falling down and posts were very loose in the ground. Mark built a 64 foot long by 6' high wooden fence for me. He showed me a sample of his fence construction, explained it to me, and then he prepared a detailed proposal, and scope of the work. His costs were a bit higher than a standard fence, but his design was much more detailed and provided me with a beautiful and structurally sound fence. He personally came to my house, and built the fence, and used a concrete base for the fence to rest on and secure metal post brackets, ensuring the fence was above the ground, secure, and minimized the fence from soaking up water on the ground, as well as left a nice border for my plants from the neighbor's yard. Additionally he notched the fence posts so the 3 (three) horizontal support brackets were flat inside the posts and secured for added strength. Something that I also noticed was he was very detailed oriented and kept his worksite safe and organized and each day when he left, my property was clean and I could see the progress of the fence and not wonder what he was doing. I am so happy I chose him to build my fence, Mark is very easy to work with, and my fence is beautiful, very strong, and I feel very confident that it will last a long time and not end up like the fence I replaced. Thank you Mark

Alfred is a creative problem solver. He communicates well, he is easy to work with, he has a wonderful "can do" attitude, and his work is excellent. He combined creativity and welding skills to solve a difficult door fitting problem (inside a heavy steel frame) that was holding up a remodel. The work was visually pleasing, and the city inspector was happy! I immediately asked Alfred to help with another project, and I was very pleased again. Alfred is my new go-to guy for all future welding or piping projects.

Jose and his crew did a beautiful job repairing and painting our wrought iron rear fence. They did a tremendous amount of prep, removing a lot of rust, filling pinholes from previous repair welds, filing / sanding / grinding, and getting everything down to smooth metal. That took days of patient, methodical work in the hot sun. It would have been very easy to cut corners, but his crew never did. I inspected daily (after they left) and their work was top notch. Working with Jose was pleasant and collaborative. Prior to beginning, we had a couple conversations about the posts rusting out. The previous owner had plugged them with plastic seals. Other iron guys had come out and recommended various other versions of plastic plugs. Jose suggested welding on some caps that he would cut from spare metal. This cost me near nothing. As such, it would have been easy to do a quick & dirty job because this was an extra and, really, who is going to get on a ladder and check out those caps? Well, I did and I took a picture of a cap in the middle of the job at one of the hardest to reach posts and you can see that the welds are clean. He primed, allowed a day for the primer to cure, then came back and painted. The results are flawless. I have no doubt that with the effort he put in this fence (which gets brutal sunlight every day, all day), I'll be just as happy 6 years from now. Use Jose and his guys with confidence that you'll get a top tier job.

I wanted a stand for my aquarium. A google search led me to thumbtack. 30 minutes later, Jose was in my living room talking about my project with me. The next day, I have a completed steel stand exactly to my specifications. Great welds, accurate fabrication, and really fast. I have no complaints. I will work with Jose again very soon.

The job involved fabricating and installing a metal piece above the hood vent over our stove. Dave was always responsive to my inquiries and questions and offered well thought out options. The price was fare, the quality of work was outstanding and Dave and his staff were a joy to work with. It is not always easy to find good people to work with, but when you do, it is a very pleasant experience. I will readily recommend Dave to all my friends and family.

I needed a quick response to an emergency situation requiring work to be done on the roof of a house to prevent rain intrusion into a metal chimney of a stand alone gas fireplace, in front of a major storm. The work was completed within hours of my request on the same day, and of high quality, and I could not be happier with the result.

The installation guys were polite, friendly and did a great job picking up every scrap of material created by the installation process. The door we selected was quite a bit thicker than their competitors as well, but the price was still fantastic. In addition to a beautiful new door, they installed a new keypad and repaired our existing opener. I highly recommend Corona Garage for your next garage door repair and/or replacement.

Jarod completed my custom safe build project and I could not be more pleased! He is very experienced in metal work, honest, professional, and his price for labor and materials are fair. Not only did he pay attention to the design details I wanted him to follow but he also offered great suggestions that made it even better. We agreed for him to provide me with pictures of his progress along the way to discuss the project's progress. His communication about any changes if needed, methods of payment, and other developments along the way were all top notch. If I could give him 10 stars I would without hesitation! Great to meet someone else who stands by his word and his work 100%. I will use his services and talents again very soon on another project I have for him. If you choose him you will not be dissapointed. Thank you Jarod, my God keep on blessing you sir!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a welder work?

A welder is person who works (typically) with metal. Welding can be done with a wide variety of metals including aluminum, wrought iron, stainless steel, carbon steel and galvanized steel. A welder uses extreme heat to meld together metal pieces to repair or create metal structures. Welding is used for automotive, structural, plate, decorative, pipe, restoration and other metalwork projects. Some items that are made by welding are custom fences, metal gates, interior decorative metalwork, and safety features such as window bars or safety gates for children or pets. The average national cost for welding services ranges from $100 to $150, although pricing can be higher depending on project scale and whether the cost of the metal is included. Hourly rates for welding services can range from $65 to $125. Welders may have a minimum service fee, especially if they are performing the work at your location. Welding can be dangerous work without the proper safety equipment, so welders work with protective masks and body coverings to prevent damage to their vision or skin. Some examples of welding repairs could be $25-$30 for tacking together small items (such as patio chairs), or $35-$100 for larger repairs on metal furniture. Bigger projects, such as a baby gate to seal off the top of a staircase, could cost $550-$750. This price would include one full day of metal cutting, one full day of welding and construction, one to one and a half full days of grinding and painting, and a few hours of installation.

How many types of welding are there?

Welding is a method of fusing together two or more pieces of metal using electricity or flame. Welding is used to construct buildings, make metal sculptures, build and repair cars, make gates and furniture, and for many other practical and aesthetic uses. There are multiple types of welding. Here is an overview of the most popular methods:

  • Stick welding: Formally known as shielded metal arc welding, stick welding uses extreme heat applied at the seam of two separate metals to melt them together. A third (intermediary) metal may also be incorporated for added strength. As the metals cool, they are bonded together.
  • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding: Formally known as gas metal arc welding, MIG welding uses a tool to feed metal wire into the weld puddle while an electrical arc melts the wire, which will fuse to the base metal upon cooling.
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Formally referred to gas tungsten arc welding, TIG welding is a similar process MIG welding, but instead of using a tool that continuously feeds metal wire into the weld puddle, the welder must hold and manually feed the stick.
  • Gas welding: A mix of flammable gas and oxygen is used to heat metal to the melting point.
  • Forge welding: Forging metal is an ancient art that involves heating two pieces of metal until they are molten, then hammering them together.

How long is welding training?

Because there are different paths to learning to weld, there’s no single timeline for welding training. Some people attend school part-time while working their current job, while others can focus full-time on their welding training courses. People interested in learning how to weld as a hobby can also take classes from professional welders, such as at KCMA & Services in Waterloo, Indiana.

Expect to take at least two years to go from welding newbie to American Welding Society Certified Welder. A junior college Certificate of Completion welding course is two semesters full-time, or 10 units of coursework. With this certificate, students are qualified for an apprenticeship or internship, rather than a full-time entry-level job. Welding apprenticeships range from 6,000 to 8,000 hours long, equalling three to four years at 2,000 hours per year. Some junior colleges, such as Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, offer more in-depth welding programs that lead to different welding certifications, such as arc welding and tungsten gas arc welding. These take three to four semesters to complete, so you could be qualified for an entry-level job in about two years of full-time study. Alternatively, you can prepare for employment more quickly through an intensive vocational program at a trade school. For instance, Ohio’s Lincoln Electric Company offers a comprehensive program that prepares people for a welding career in just 20 weeks and 600 hours of hands-on instruction.

Where can I take welding classes?

Your options for welding classes depend on where you live and whether you’re willing to travel. Many skilled professionals offer private or group welding classes across the U.S. Some high schools offer classes for teens, but many people learn from a private trainer or in a junior college or vocational school. Students learn basic welding, machining and fabrication processes, including using gas and arc welding equipment, and qualify for an apprenticeship or internship. Other colleges as well as vocational schools have two-year associate’s degree programs that prepare you to take the welding certification exam and seek full-time employment.

How much is welding training?

The cost of welding training depends on where you take your classes and how quickly you want to complete the program. In general, junior college welding classes are the least expensive, but may take longer; trade schools offer intensive classes that lead to certification more quickly, but are more expensive. For example, Cerritos College, a junior college in Los Angeles that offers a welding training course, charges an average of $46 per unit; most of their welding certificate programs require 19 units of coursework, so cost about $875 each to complete. Pro-Weld, an on-site welding school in Idaho, offers three different welding courses. The 36-week welder fabrication and the 24-week gas tungsten arc welding courses each cost an average of $3,300, while pipe welding costs an average of $2,500 for a 24-week session or an average of $4,500 for a 52-week session. The 20-week comprehensive program at the Lincoln Electric Company in Ohio costs an average of $9,500. Many programs require students to purchase approximately $120-$200 worth of personal welding equipment in addition to textbooks or other class material fees.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
