I had Jennifer give me a massage right after the Nike Women's marathon. It was THE BEST decision I made. I believe because of her great massage therapy I was able to recover more quickly from the event and not be as sore as I thought I would be. I prefer really firm massages and she was able to accommodate for that. I had other friends who were also massaged by her and I know they don't care to really firm pressure so it was great that she could accommodate all these different requests.

Lawrence gave me a fantastic therapeutic massage to help rehabilitate an upper back muscle strain I have. He was professional, on time, and thoughtful. He followed up with me the next day to see how I was doing. It's timesaving and comfortable to have a massage in your own home. I've already booked another massage with him!

Xavier is one of the most hardworking and dedicated trainers I know. I needed help with my Army Physical Fitness Test training, particularly with my two-mile because I had a huge mental block and never broke that barrier or dropped my time no matter what I did. I found out that Xavier had done extensive research prior, and there were many days we went over one hour but he did not charge extra. He is someone I would describe as not after your money but truly cares about helping you reach your goals, no matter the cost and extra burden on him. The special thing about Xavier is really what you are getting in his packages-- it's not just physical training, but a package that addresses all three things: physical, emotional, and mental. With my mental block, he took me to speak to his wife, who was professionally certified. All at no extra cost to me-- it was all on his dime. Why? Because like I said, he cares about the person and his/her goal rather than just making money. When I was injured or on the brink of getting injured, he was able to help me with physical therapy as well (he's a massage therapist) so I didn't even have to go to a doctor for that. (He really knows what he's doing with physical therapy and massage; I actually feel that it's his specialty). It obviously worked because I was somehow able to avoid all those close calls, recover from a strained shoulder and strained hip, and prevent further injury ALL while intensely training at the same time nonstop for the twenty days I had left. We definitely went over just one hour everyday but Xavier never said anything. I know what I was able to achieve earlier, and I had reached my wits' end with making any improvement. Today, saying I reached my goal is an understatement. I completely smashed my goal and broke a mental and physical barrier forever along the way-- by almost 2 minutes. Something I couldn't break by even a minute for NINETEEN years by myself. But only twenty days with Xavier and suddenly I broke it by not just one but TWO minutes in an already short two-mile run? AND somehow got over my greatest fear at the same time? That's what I call a miracle. Got above and beyond for everything else. At times I know I gave Xavier a hard time because sometimes I wouldn't listen to him or argued with him about what was right. But it doesn't matter who was right or wrong at that time because all that matters to me is the end result-- and I succeeded. Thank you Xavier!

I contacted Sean because I had a problem with my energy that was hindering my connection to spirits as well as making energy work more difficult for me. I have always found it difficult to feel energy and I thought it was just that some people find it easier than others and thought nothing more of it. Recently I was made aware of this blocking energy and found Sean via the internet. I had one remote session with Sean via Skype and my problem was resolved. Sean conducted a past life regression and we discovered that a traumatic past life had caused my current energetic condition and Sean enabled me to heal this issue during the session without the need for further remedial work. I am still amazed that this issue was so quickly resolved and Sean's session was my first past life regression therapy. I was extremely pleased with Sean's guidance and results and I have no hesitation in recommending him to others who are considering contacting him for assistance. Neil G, Perth, Western Australia

Working with Jessa has been a great experience. I have seen her about 5 or 6 times now, and her massage therapy has been very helpful for my backpain. I am impressed with her techniques and her ability to target specific treatment modalities. She pays attention to my specific needs, tailoring her technique accordingly. She also spends time before sessions with diagnosis (i.e. stretching to see where my muscle limitations are) and then using that info to customize the massage. Also, she is friendly and sweet to deal with. Definitely recommend!

Jacquie has helped me make breakthroughs and release some issues that have lingered for years despite various modalities of therapy. It's also empowering work as she teaches me tools along the way. You'll need to be clear about what you want to heal though in order to experience the power of the work.

Nathaniel is a great massage therapist that not only knows massage but multiple modalities of bodywork. He performed deep tissue, trigger point therapy, and myofacial release on my body. After one session my body immedietly had more Range Of Motion. As a personal trainer for fitness 19 i even started referring my clients to Nathaniel for their bodywork. Most massage therapists are either too soft or aggresive but Nathaniel knows the sweet spot for each individual. If your looking for a good massage therapist Nathaniel is your guy.- Raymond Sunga

I had an amazing one hour massage earlier this evening from Johnny. He was professional, friendly, and instantly put me at ease. His massage style is therapeutic but also very relaxing; and he uses a wonderful light massage cream which does not leave you feeling greasy. The room is very inviting and the fireplace gives off a warm glow, and the perfect amount of heat. I will continue to see Johnny when I am in town visiting SF! I highly recommend him. Bill

I have gone to Chiayueh for a variety of ailments over the years - from anxiety to running injuries - and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is an extremely talented Reiki master and massage therapist who has devoted her life to making people feel better. Chiayueh combines her background in Eastern holistic healing with training in Western massage therapy to form a practice that centers around long-lasting treatment of the body and mind. Most importantly, she truly cares about each of her patients and pours her heart and soul into her work. Make an appointment with her - you won't be sorry!

I contacted Marianne to see if she could help me with guidance and answers to my medical questions as well as help me understand how to deal with life’s overall stress due to work, relationships, finances and a whole lot more. Marianne to the rescue—fast! She far exceeded my expectations. Marianne helped me find equilibrium and peace between my heart, body and spirit, a powerful gift, much easier said than done. She uses multiple modalities and disciplines that I’ve not experienced nor known. (Believe me, I’ve been to all types of practitioners.) In a very quiet but powerful way, Marianne has the ability to untangle and balance what my Mind thinks and what my Spirit truly wants to experience. That’s pretty hard to do with me! This combination: Ayurvedic Acupressure (Marma Balance), Message therapy, (Marianne is a certified massage therapist), Ayurvedic Herbs & Aromatherapy remedies handmade by Marianne (yes, certified Purveyor of Apothycaria), Bell Ringing Vibration (yes a certified Balinese Bell Resonance and Tuning Forks Practitioner) has catapulted all my power(s) within. You name it- Marianne has either studied under the religious deities or leaders for each of these therapies (plus more) worldwide. Marianne will get you on your path! Please contact Marianne today. You will be amazed with her powers. Linda, Los Altos, everyday person looking for solutions toward a new path.

He's smart, kind, skilled, and his prices are reasonable. Chris may have saved me from serious injury, or at least major discomfort (I had TMJ from the stress I had during my exams in grad school). Chris seems really focused on healing and not into the super-bourgeois, frilly kind of massage: he's practical and amazing. His style was perfect for me. I've received all kinds of massage therapy and I can't endorse Chris more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
