Having Tucker at my daughter's first birthday was one of the highlights of our party! He was a pleasure to work with and always so nice and responsive to messages. He arrived right on time and the party really took of when he started to perform. Everyone was AMAZED by his energy and stamina. He played fun and engaging music for everyone especially the kids. I highly recommend Tucker for any of your events. Will definitely hire Tucker again!!

Summer performed for a small group of us and we were all very impressed and very happy with how it all went. I had asked her to blend in some 90's bands into her repertoire (my wife's favorite music!) and the choices were fantastic. She arrived early, played far longer than we had originally allowed time for (which was great) and was a very pleasant and easy person to get along with and communicate with. I'd hire her again in a heart beat.

I have been taking guitar lessons from Kimberly via Skype for about six years. I really like her teaching style which is systematic and focused. She tailors her lessons to my goals and time. Her teaching method is to help you gain insight and skill through patient practice of gradually changing exercises. She doesn't snow you with theory, but presents it to you in digestible amounts just when it will make sense. She welcomes questions and I always learn from our discussions. She has led me to learn techniques on the guitar that I was absolutely sure I could never learn. For something to seem impossible at the start, to seem possible a week later and to be routine a month later is amazingly uplifting. Kimberly's background was first a life of teaching herself and playing gigs with all kinds of bands in all kinds of places. She has also deepened and strengthened her knowledge by gaining academic degrees in guitar and jazz and also by studying under masters. This gives her an incredibly deep understanding of learning and teaching music, an immense skill in playing guitar, and an appreciation for the challenges of playing with other people. I especially love her continued enthusiasm for guitar and that she really enjoys teaching. I have found in Kimberly the best of teachers and highly recommend her without reservation.

We hired Mr. Varnell for our wedding and could not have been happier with his performance! Not only a true musical talent, but an honest professional who can walk you through the "in's and out's" with ease on an already hectic day. I was so happy we did not hire a tacky DJ or the same old organ/piano player for our wedding...but instead brought the elegance and uniqueness of the saxophone. We received so many compliments from our guests. Would most definitely hire him again!

We hired Doc Rock-It for our wedding and they were amazing. It was the best decision we made to book them for our wedding. These musicians are not only great artists, they are industry pros and know how to run a wedding so that it is smooth and efficient. So many guests told us they loved the music, and this band is very versatile playing music that spans almost 100 years with ease. They played a jazz set for cocktail hour, an easy listening set for dinner, and a dance set. We had 231 at our wedding young and old, and they all enjoyed the music and many got on the dance floor. John is effective, communicative, and works hard to exceed all of your expectations. All of the musicians in the band were great to work with, nice and down to earth, and enthusiastic and happy to be there. We could not be happier with their services and I highly recommend them for your wedding or special event.

My dad and my sister took guitar from Kipp years before I did. I studied drums and vocals, and in high school I was the lead singer for a few bands. After I went away to college, I realized that I wanted to play an instrument that would allow me to accompany myself as a singer. And I wanted to have more influence over how the music is arranged when I work with a band. I started lessons with Kipp this past summer, and then went back to college. Now we’re doing lessons via Skype. Kipp is teaching me to play and sing at the same time with confidence, and schooling me on the things I need to know as a musician to lead a band intelligently. She says that it’s important that a singer has the respect of the musicians who are working with her, and the way to get that is to know what’s going on musically. Kipp’s making the whole thing fun, and teaching me a lot at the same time. She says that now – to be a strong performer -- I need to learn to sing and play and DANCE at the same time instead of just tapping my foot. Lol.

So happy that I hired Sandro Razciel Band to perform at my wedding. Their music was magical. I was crying before even coming down the stairs just by hearing their beautiful music. They made my wedding so special. I would hire them again. They were flexible and did whatever it took to make sure our wedding was perfect. Don't think twice about hiring!

Hugo is very responsive to all my questions and answer it very quickly. Initially I was looking for a band but Hugo sent me email and I liked his video so I decided to hire him. It's 1 of the best decision I've ever made.Everyone at the party is impressed with Hugo. He is really a good singer and I'm really satisfied with his performance which is way better than his video. I will definitely hire him for future events. You hit a jackpot when you hire him so stop looking and just hire him!

Nico sang at my husband's birthday party last month, and it was just so wonderful to have him. Him and his band got there exactly an hour before to set up and they were all very friendly and professional. All the guests had a great time, I would hire him again in a heartbeat!

Masatoshi played with his trio for my wedding reception and I couldn't have asked for a better band to play. He was flexible to the weather (it was a rainy reception!), finding a dry place to set up, the rain did not stop them! They really set the mood, creating a jovial and social ambiance. They played while guests were eating and talking and really captured our guests with their talented musicality and and stunning performance. Thank you so much for being a part of a memorable day!

I first heard CJ and the Palmer Jazz Band performing at a friend's birthday party. I am not a big blues fan, but I was so intrigued by their sound, and stage presence, that I texted a friend and sent her a picture of them performing. They were/are awesome. I later hired the band to perform at that friends surprise party. She was speechless, we all, danced, cheered, and sang with the band. We all had the best time. Mr. Palmer and the band are timely, helpful, entertaining, friendly, accomodating, talented and professional. My friends and I love listening to, singing along with and dancing to their music. CJ makes it even more engaging as he serenades the crowd while playing his saxaphone.

Jonah is always a pleasure to work with and has very fair rates. He is also easy to comminicate with and punctual, hence the 5 stars.

I went into their studio to simply lay down a few guitar ideas for some songs I was writing. I mentioned how I heard drum parts in my head to go with my guitars but I don't play drums. The audio engineer suggested I "beat box" my drum ideas and he tracked exactly what I had in mind. I came back home with a legit sounding demo to show my peers in hopes of forming a band. Overall great experience. Would definitely recommend. Great atmosphere, good time!

Very skillful with his guitar and has a very accurate ear, which is very important when you play in a band. He has been teaching me and my friend for two years on a weekly basis, focusing on how to play together in a band. I definitely recommend him to anyone who really wants to improve. He does not appreciate when you come without practicing the current song a little bit at home

Absoulute has played for California Yacht Club's biggest regatta party two years in a row, and both times, the crowd wouldn't let them stop. The band was perfectly tuned in to the vibe of the crowd and everyone was dancing. As the organizer, they could not have made my life any easier. They were all super to work with -- on time, professional, easy going, and eager to please.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
