Outstanding company from top to bottom. You can always tell when a person has chosen their job profession because they actually enjoy doing it. They came to fix a water spot on my ceiling and offered a very reasonable price. While they were there, they also decided to patch a hole in my tile and help me install a ceiling fan for free! I will always use and recommend this company for any future home repairs.

First of all, I want to point out that they installed my bathroom faucets without issue but did a terrible job at a simple baseboard replacement. They said they couldn’t find the matching size, but instead of informing us and letting us to decide how to proceed, they went ahead and installed the mismatched baseboard! It looked terrible! It looks worse now than before. It has been a week and they still haven’t contacted me to apologize or arrange to fix it. In fact they said to come back and fix it would cost us a service fee. Hence this review. They were very unprofessional and I do not recommend them at all. Note - they also did not clean up well after installing the sinks. I was very disappointed and will not be using this handyman nor thumbtack again.

Mike installed a glass tile backsplash in my kitchen, and it looks great! I told him up-front that I am very detail-oriented, and during the installation and after, he went out of his way and did everything he possibly could to make sure that I was happy with the backsplash, and I am. He is friendly, did a great job, and has fair prices, and I would definitely recommend him.

From start to finish a great experience. His electronic communications were clear and professional. This versus another vendor who was insulting in his response and demanding as well. A telephone call to coordinate the provision of materials before coming to the house with no markup on the materials purchased are examples of working with Kevin. He is top on my list of handymen. In fact I have already contacted him regarding another project.

We had Joey install engineered flooring in three bedrooms. Two were on a plywood subfloor with tile while the third was on an old, rough concrete slab with concrete steps leading into the home. He handled all of the demo, including the steps, built a new stepdown and installed the wood flooring to beautiful effect. He was able to start on the entire job on short notice and completed it in under two weeks. During the entire process he was communicative and extremely professional. It was a pleasure working with him and I would hire him again for future flooring needs!

Installation of flooring. I was not going to install in the kitchen flooring because of a cabinet that sits right above my fridge. Mike the owner said he would move the cupboard up an inch so the flooring and the cupboard would still leave room for the fridge. No problem and free of charge! How great right? He had his laborers do the flooring BEFORE and then told me he was unable to move the cabinet. Since he couldn't leave my fridge in the middle of the kitchen floor, he had his guy force it into place and cracked the cabinet. NOT only that, there was a vent that was suppose to go just under the front portion of the fridge which was already cut out....but now could not fit into the hole because the fridge was too tight against the upper cabinet. So...he had a piece of flooring cut and put into the hole with the grain going in the opposite direction!!!!!!!!! I now have a cracked and ruined cabinet, a floor with patchwork and will never be able to move my fridge for cleaning behind and under. I can only imagine what damage was done to the new flooring under the fridge. BTW, I work for a union contractor so the laughs on me.

We have been working with Eddie on multiple properties for over 5 years now. His work has ranged from very simple to major remodeling and home repairs (plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodel, tile floors/counter tops, painting, roof repair and more). We really value his honesty, responsiveness and reliability. The guy is personable and he offers good ideas. And his work is very high quality, for very fair rates. A good contractor is a great resource - I would definitely recommend him.

Had a excellent experience with BCD Construction. I have had problems in the past with contractors cancelling and just not showing up, this was absolutely not the case with BCD. They showed up on time when they said they would. All the people who worked on my job (installation of vinyl flooring and baseboards) were very nice and helpful, and went beyond to make sure things were done properly. If you want honest , professional people who get the job done right you will be happy in choosing BCD.

Ruben was very fast in contacting me after I submitted my request for demolition of old tile and vanity, and installation of bathroom floor and wall tiling. He also has someone that can come out to do custom glass shower door on top of a bath tub which I also had done. Ruben and his crew were very efficient and quick while working in the bathroom. His prices are reasonable. The tile came out very nice. The only problem I experienced was that two to three times Ruben cancelled on me and we had to reschedule. One time he confirmed he was coming but then later that evening he had to reschedule to another day.

After having a water leak, we decided to have the kitchen and family room renovated. This involved the replacement of floors, counters, sink and cooktop as well as refinishing extensive cabinetry. We were not remotely impressed by the first 4 or 5 contractors we called. We then had Morena Tile and Home Design come to provide an estimate. The difference was amazing. Sami and his team immediately demonstrated working knowledge of what needed to be done and how it could be accomplished in each area. After their analysis we did not look further because we felt we had finally found the contractor for the project. The quote was in the ballpark of what we thought it would cost so we did not even consider looking for a lower bid. The whole project started and ended in a timely fashion. The various workers were obviously experienced in their respective fields and performed beautifully. Even so, there was daily review and supervision of the project by a manager. I had heard nightmare stories about contractors from many sources but with Morena, we never had an unpleasant moment. There were no surprises or additional costs except for changes we requested. The attitude of all involved was so positive and friendly that we actually missed them when it was over. The finished product was impressive and as close as it can come to perfect. We are looking forward to having this company remodel other areas of our home very soon and highly recommend them. Tina T San Clemente, CA

We decided to install hardwood floor in all of the down stairs and tiles in bathrooms. We consider 5 local reputable flooring companies and out of these five companies "Hardwood and Tile Discounters" were the most professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. Their price very good. They delivered a good quality workmanship, and they warranty their work. I have recommend them to some of my relatives, and they have had similar experience. So i strongly recommend Hardwood and Tile Discounters Regards, Sam G

I have worked with Nick for over a two decades now. He has done numerous repair jobs and/or remodels for me on my homes as well as worked on a few rental properties I own. Everything from a roof repair, plumbing leaks/new plumbing, tile work, a new fence, Jacuzzi installations to full bathroom & kitchen remodels. He's always shown up on time when he said he'd be here and has completed the projects in the amount of time he estimated. His pricing has always been fair and the quality of work has always been exceptional. He cleans up after himself when he's done and makes sure that you're happy with everything before signing off on the work. He's a great guy to work with and has great sens of humor. With all the bad stuff you hear about construction people and contractors out there, he's a breath of fresh air. I've done everything from full new construction work to minor repairs and he's always the guy I call first. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone that they can count on the give you a good deal and get the job done without any headaches. Ken aka Monty

I was ready for some remodeling in my home. My kitchen needed an update and so did a few of the bathrooms. Searching google I found GIM and saw that they did energy efficient remodeling and upgrades. I contacted GIM and set an appointment for a consultant to come by to show me some options. The consultant showed us many samples of flooring, tile, roofing, painting, and multiple other products they offered. They even had their own architect to take care of the drawings for me and also had a 3d design for the kitchen. All the work was done properly and my home was left clean everyday. Appreciate all the hard work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
