Ricardo arrived on time and went right to work. Unfortunately, my old dishwasher was held in place by rare type of bolt, so we were unsuccessful in removing it. Nevertheless, I would contact him again for other issues I cannot do myself.

Tom is a great guy who installed my dryer and dishwasher. Both appliances were tricky to install, and yet Tom stayed longer to get the job finished. Thank you.

Alex fixed my Thermador oven and range. It’s taken 7 years and three service people to get it repaired. He did it for $250 labor and parts. It works perfectly now! He was not able to fully repair my Bosch dryer but came back three times and got it working better. I think it has more to do with my very old dryer. He refunded me labor costs in full without my even asking! I’ll work with Alex again! I highly recommend him.

Nathan from FixEm Appliance Repair was great. When he got here he was friendly, explained everything he was doing, what was wrong with my stove, and what the parts would cost me. I appreciated his cheerful efficiency as well. Their customer service rep Moses was also very efficient, this company has full transparency and was open about the entire process from the initial phone call to my fixed stovetop they are Amazing! Will definitely recommend them!!!

My Whirlpool Duet Dryer was failing to start running -- just a "beep" and "click" when I pushed the Start button, but the drum wouldn't turn. Poking around on YouTube and Google I figured out how to get the diagnostics codes out of the display. Showed "88" code and all LED lights lit up, which means that all looked good. I contacted 6 appliance repair shops through Yelp and gave them all the same info. Tim from IRBIS responded almost immediately and he and I did some more diagnostics over the phone. We thought it could either be the Thermal Fuse or the whole circuit board. He gave me a quote for either repair, in writing, shortly thereafter, and since the other 5 repair shops were not as responsive, I made an appointment to have it repaired the next day. Ryan showed up on-time and got to work. He had to take the entire machine apart to get to the Thermal Fuse. He tested it with the multimeter and it, indeed, was bad. He replaced the part with one that was working (which we also tested) and put the whole machine back together. But when we started it up, there was a different problem. The diagnostics codes now said "6E". Ryan took it apart again and took a close look at the door switch, which appeared to be broken as well. He was able to fix it by hand and put everything back together. In the end, Ryan spent a lot of time with me and fixing the dryer. He charged me exactly what Tim had quoted. The work includes a 6-month warranty and I feel confident that these guys will make it right if anything does go wrong. Good, quality service. Thanks to Ryan and Tim for the professional work!

I can’t say enough great things about my experience with Javier. From great communication, fantastic value and professionalism. I would hire Javier again in the blink of an eye. He was very open and honest about the work he was doing (Dishwasher repair). The work was done in a timely manner and we were given a 90 labor and parts warranty. Great piece of mind, very very pleased with Javier and his work.

My husband and I were looking for help on a few odd jobs we needed done in the house, but it was very difficult to find someone to help. We wanted to install a fireplace mantel, an attic ladder, and a new sink with a disposal. Apparently, the jobs were just too small for most contractors. I found Edwin on Thumbtack and then checked out his personal website. He came out to see what work would be required, gave a very reasonable estimate, and scheduled a time to come do the work. When he arrived, he not only did the work quickly and professionally, but he explained what he was doing and why. My husband and I were very grateful since we want to learn how to do things ourselves. Unfortunately, as we were cleaning up, an item fell and nicked our wood floor. Edwin had to leave, so my husband and I did what we could to repair the floor. Nothing worked, so we called the original installers. It cost $50 to get them to come out, and they estimated the repair would cost more than $300. I contacted Edwin to see if he had any other suggestions, and he came out that same weekend and fixed the floor in under 45 minutes. We had all the materials, so it cost us nothing! I would definitely recommend him to anyone, and my husband and I will call him in the future if there is ever anything we don’t feel comfortable doing ourselves. Edwin is amazing!

Jon was courteous and did a great job installing our new sink. He was also flexible as he had to come back out to finish the job because I needed to have the granite slightly re-shaped to fit the new sink. I'd recommend Jon for any of your future plumbing needs. I dropped one star because it took a few texts/calls to confirm the second appointment and he forgot to reopen the valve under the sink for our dishwasher - minor issue, but took me a bit to figure it out.

Bill did a great job helping out with a few things around my new home. We hired him to mount a TV which he did a great job with. We also needed a complicated dishwasher part put together which he did along with hanging a few other things. He also charged a very fair price.

Ahmad was able to repair both a dishwasher and stove issue for me. The initial stove repair found we needed to order a part, and after he came back when the part arrived he realized another part was needed. Ahmad was very professional and did charge me extra based on the originally agreed upon quote for all of the work. He was also able to help me with a few other handyman projects around the house while there for a reasonable rate. Would have been great if Ahmad could have improved a bit on replying to messages in a timely manner, but the work quality was good and this project needed 3 trips so I can forgive a few unreturned messages. Would hire again.

Tom is so resourceful and helpful. I had various projects - a leaking faucet, broken water/ice dispenser on refrigerator, broken dishwasher - Tom has been an all-in-one, figure it out and get it fixed guy. He's also really good company and an all-around stand-out guy. He is quick to respond and efficient. I also learned a lot from him about how things around the house work, and I appreciate his knowledge and problem-solving skills. I would work with him on any repair-related project and highly recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
    • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
    • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.
