Sergey did a great job installing my garage cabinets. He helped customize certain pieces to make it fit well with the garage and made sure his work area was cleaned up by stacking up all of the cardboard boxes the cabinets came in. I would use Sergey again!

I was referred to Renato at Hilux Maintenance by a colleague at work. I have to say that it was probably the best experience I've had working with any contractor. Renato helped me convert an ugly room in my basement to an inviting and functional media room. The job included a lot of carpentry work to build custom cabinets, wall paneling, crown molding, base boards, installing electric outlets, installing an electric fireplace, installing a barn door. I wish I could attach pictures to this review to show off the finished product, it was that good. The best part about working with Renato, is that he is honest, hardworking, very good at his trade, detail oriented. It’s really hard to find all these qualities in a contractor these days. When I’m ready to finish the rest of my basement, he will be the first guy I’ll call.

Jasper was on time, responsive, and did an incredibly high quality paint job on our cabinets and even helped us install new handles, knobs, and hinges in a short amount of time. Our kitchen and bathrooms now have a great new 21st century look (updated from its original 80's look and feel). The quote we were given was extremely fair. For the overall experience of this job - the only word that can be used here is indeed 'outstanding'.

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

I recently was referred to this company by a friend who also used them for a home renovation. My personal experience with them was outstanding! They arrived on time, did an amazing job and did not over charge like most other companies do. In my opinion they were very well priced as well as professional and courteous. I've had some negative experiences with different companies in the past, so as reflected in their quality of work, this is definately a company of that I would hire again in the future.

I met Luis through Craigslist, we had just purchased a home and needed a built in entertainment unit made from scratch in an awkward nook. He definitely delivered from sketch to installation took about a week and It came out amazing. We didn't know what to expect from finding someone on Craig's, but we lucked out. We had him install baseboards and drill new holes through our kitchen cabinets for new pulls. His work is solid, clean and he uses the best equipment to get the job done. He's a good guy, honest, trustworthy and a great value. Would definitely recommend him to anyone who needs a handyman they can trust.

Victor remodeled the kitchen in my rental in Milpitas. New cabinets, paint and fixed the plumbing. He also installed a new vanity in the bathroom. He finished the job in two weeks just as he said it would be completed. I had no problem giving him the key to the house, he is very honest and trustful.

Our search for help with our cabinets started after purchasing a home that was in desperate need of help to move out of the 80’s. The cabinets were solid oak, with great hardware, and many nice pull outs and other features. Good cabinets, they just needed a refresh. We began our search and education about cabinet refacing, re-finishing, and replacement. We looked at several refacing companies that wanted to charge in excess of 10k for sub-standard panel doors. And no work done on the inside of the cabinets! We had a very hard time finding a refinisher. We eventually found 2, Fernando being the only one that got back to us in a reasonable period of time. Fernando came out quickly, looked at the job, explained his process, and quoted us a price. We shook hands, and set a date. He arrived on time and got right to it. He had to work around our floor refinishing, and some painting and did so with no issues. We had a very tight schedule, with this being one of the last jobs to be done before moving in. Even with a few modifications that came up, he got it all done, and it looks great! We are so happy we did not go with a refacing and frankly we would not have been able to afford getting new cabinets that even approached the quality of these cabinets. So refacing really turned out well! I highly recommend Fernando Fernandez for cabinet refinishing. He is a no BS, down to earth, and honest guy that knows his trade well.

I had hired Klein’s custom woodwork to get my cabinet doors fixed. We had problems with loose hinges. Nicholas and his partner Andreas showed up on time, assessed the project and gave me an almost accurate timeline for completion and a cost estimate. When I tacked on a few more projects to the list, Nicholas was very flexible and accommodating and offered to complete the work. We gave our kitchen cabinets a mini make-over. The team also cleaned my kitchen cabinets and drawers as they were fixing them. They also fixed a Sliding mirror door of one of the closets. It had to be replaced and Nick selected a good quality replacement from Home Depot at a fair price. It also helped that both Nick and Andreas were pet lovers. I didn’t have to keep our Maltese locked up in the crate while they were working on the job. Great workmanship, cleaned up after the job well, kept me updated on the progress frequently and great attitude, I would recommend them to my fiends and hire them for future projects.

My wife and I had a rental property in Walnut Creek that was rented for many years. When our tenant moved out, we decided to remodel and upgrade it. M&M Construction remodeled the bathroom (new vanity, and tiles), kitchen ( new cabinets and counter top), installed new flooring throughout the house, added a coat of paint, and upgraded the appliances. At the end the house looked so much nicer that we where able to rent it for more, and found a new tenant within a few days. Great job guys

Really enjoyed working with Dermot Chawke. He did all of the finish carpentry on a remodel of the first floor of our home. He installed doors, hardware, baseboards, other trim pieces, and shelves; rebuilt an interior staircase; and custom built shelves and cabinets for an area under the stairs. He was easy to communicate with, always showed up when he said he would, had great ideas to maximize storage space, and did great quality work. Would be happy to use him again in the future.

California Customer Painting & Design delivered such a remarkable output for my project. I am only mad I did not know of them sooner for previous work I've done on my house. Jen & Joe very much know what they are doing, how to help consult on design choices, and carried forward the new cabinets with such precision. I already have several other projects lined up for them to do next, now that I have seen first hand the quality workmanship they deliver!

Kiko was great. Being a perfectionist its wasn't getting the cabinets in but with all of the cost of a kitchen remodel it was equally important to me that they looked new, we're in good shape, with little if no damage. Kiko was able to build & install these in that manner. The once older kitchen had many challenges that together with Kikos skills we were able to improvise And work threw. A great represents everything for IKEA!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.
