Laurel is a natural with small children, and she obviously takes delight in helping them learn. I have a 1st grader who has benefited from her skills in teaching reading and writing. She also has an artistic side, which my child loves.
Hi everybody, I'm participating in Toni's ESL small group. I have increased my skills: reading, writing and pronunciation in a short time. Now I feel more sure when somebody speaks English to me, or when I have a work interview. Toni is not just an excellent teacher, now she is a good friend ! The group is fun, you will be very comfortable. Come join us.! Ana
Youlian's lessons are very well organized and planned, and she has an absolutely fantastic ability to explain the nuances and subtleties of day-to-day Mandarin. Every lesson includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension (I'm just using Pinyin for now but she covers Hanzi as well), and conversation practice, and Youlian always provides me with very helpful feedback.
Alen was a teacher at our school for several years. Our students were consistently very satisfied with Alen's lesson plans and delivery. We happily refer our students to Alen if they are looking for professional tutoring services. Alen has an outstanding grasp of all aspects of English instruction from grammar to writing to test preparation.
Anish is an excellent GRE tutor. He offered to tutor me one-on-one in order to accommodate for my busy school schedule. He is very good at explaining challenging reading comprehension questions in simple yet clear ways and always stop to make sure I understand everything. Also, he asks what I would like to focus on before each session to make sure he covers all aspects that I want to improve upon. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs help with GRE.
I had Ms. Miller for U.S. History for a year, and she definitely made the class very exciting. Instead of just reading the textbook, we got to play interactive games like Jeopardy to learn the material and work together on group projects. She is a great teacher, and I knew that I could always go to her for help if I needed it. Ms. Miller is also extremely nice, and she truly does love teaching.
A wonderful 5 stars. Kristen tutored my 7 year old son in reading and writing during the summer. I thought I would quote Kristen from a few of the updates she emailed us as I feel this aptly captures Kristen’s dedication, quality and professionalism as a tutor: “My hope is to help James feel authority and confidence when he chooses a book. The "quality" of the reading material is less important than the habit. No matter what he reads, he is becoming a better reader as long as he engages with the book… Learning to write is a procedural practice, meaning we wear it into our brains like a groove in a record. The improvement will happen over time. By the end of the week James could read his own writing back to me. At the beginning of the week, he couldn’t. Also he proposed his own writing assignment in lesson three. That self-challenging initiative is a good sign. That means he understands how to utilize tutoring, how to create an idea out of nothing, and how organize his thoughts around that idea. He dictated the piece and then I recited his dictation and assisted with spelling of larger words as he wrote. He clearly wanted to communicate his thoughts on soccer in writing…” My son ended the summer with a book about dinosaurs that he wrote and illustrated with Kristen facilitating the process and discovered a confidence and enthusiasm for reading and writing. We are grateful for Kristen’s help.
Liz is a great teacher! We worked together on personal statements and research proposals. I became much more confident in my writing skills. Furthermore, because of her lessons, I was able to complete an advanced writing class which was designed for graduate native speakers with grade "A." In addition, She is a very nice person to work with. Her sense of humor and optimistic perspective made our classes engaging and fun!
My stepdaughter has been working with Sylvia for a few months now and we can really see a difference in her math and English (reading, writing, spelling, etc). My stepdaughter actually looks forward to her time with Sylvia, which is so important to us. Sylvia is very patient, personable and knowledgeable. My stepdaughter got very excited yesterday, after she found out that Sylvia is also fluent in Spanish because she would like to start working on that as well. I feel that we really lucked out with finding Sylvia. Soon, my other stepdaughter will be working with Sylvia to prep her for the SSAT!
Ellie tutored my daughter Jessica for several months for the writing and reading sections of the SAT. Jessica learned grammar and vocabulary that she had not been taught in high school and she learned speed reading with greater comprehension. As a bonus, Jessica felt her newly learned writing skills carried over to better grades in High School classes and improved her college application essays. Jessica really appreciated the opportunity to work with Ellie to gain the confidence to perform well on the SAT. As a result, Jessica earned a very high score on the SAT and was accepted to the University of California in San Diego. I highly recommend Ellie as a tutor for the SAT.

I wanted to start learning Spanish while I stayed in US one month and I found Lena through Thumbtack. Although she was surprised that I chose her among a number of other teachers since she didn't have any reviews yet, I felt right after reading Lena's self introduction, that she is exactly that teacher with whom I want to learn Spanish. I encourage also others to choose other starting teachers without reviews and give them a chance, because my experience with Lena is very good. Lena is smart, interesting, friendly, talkative, always on time etc. Probably it is impossible to learn a new language within a couple of classes (at least for me it is), but within this time I hope to get an overview of the nature of language and know some basic things. Learning with Lena is flexible - you can compose your lessons according to your personal needs and level. Lena always contributes my ideas and wishes, also offers them from her side as well.
Sofia has been working with my daughter since she was 3.5 years old. Now she is 8. My daughter loves working with her. Sofia is a wonderful teacher, very knowledgeable, supportive, super patient, competent, resourceful, result oriented. She has been helping my child with writing, reading, comprehension, math, Russian language. They've been making together beautiful art projects. I'm very pleased with her work and would highly recommend her to other parents.
In the beginning, I was really afraid of talking to others in English because I know that I can’t speak English well. However, after some lessons, I become more and more confident and fell in love with the lessons. I tried speaking to others and they answered me. This greatly encouraged me.
It was wonderful to have Claire as a french tutor in Hong Kong! I had learnt so much in just a year, covering 80% of the grammar tenses and have studied almost three french books. Claire was kind to share some of her singing experience and techniques as well. Furthermore, she gave a few lessons on drawing and sketching techniques too. Now studying high school overseas and doing French as an elective subject, I received an average of As for reading and comprehension and as of last month, got full marks and 98% in my French oral assessment and exam. Thanks Claire!
I am a writing tutor. Sharon took over for me when I had a scheduling conflict with one of my college students. This student has multiple learning challenges in both reading comprehension and in writing. I despaired of finding a tutor who could handle the situation. Sharon stepped in and performed admirably. After one meeting, she had pinpointed the many difficulties of my student. She then took copious notes and built on my suggestions, prescribing a multi-pronged tutoring approach. It worked! The student received a B for the course and was thrilled. I whole-heartedly recommend Sharon. She is conscientious, hard-working, flexible, and creative. Most of all she is kind, patient, and extremely respectful toward her learners (and she has a great sense of humor!) She works well with parents and is able to design a program that fits each student's needs. Kudos to an outstanding fellow tutor!
We hired Matt to help with our 6 year old's reading comprehension before entering first grade this year and he has been excellent.
She was a very experienced and creative Mandarin tutor. I was very bored of reading textbooks from my old Chinese schools. She created her own lessons that are way more fun and effective than textbooks.

I can give lessons of reading, writing, and talking in Spanish, mostly for beginners, but I'm fluent; I can also help other levels because I lived most of my life in Colombia. The price per hour is $17, but I can fix it depending on where it is and on how many hours.
