- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I am continuously taking classes and I feel that it is a credit to my personality more than it is needed to keep up with the industry needs. I love entertaining at parties and one of the ways to do that is to be "in touch" with the latest fads. Most of the people I meet in this industry take at least one or two classes a year to continue learning. I am a Certified Balloon Artist and have taken classes in creating balloon dresses, working with 8 foot balloons, creating balloon centerpieces, creating balloon columns and arches 20 different ways and more. I am also teaching classes out of my home to anyone who is interested in learning new techniques and tidbits for their balloon business or just to impress their friends.
- How did you get started doing this type of work? The thought of being a balloon artist first hit me when I was in my 20's. I watched a balloon artist at a local restaurant and thought that there was no way on earth I could ever memorize all of the twists and turns to create lots of different balloon animals. But in my 30's, I learned that I could do anything I set my mind to and one day my daughter asked me to buy her a balloon kit and make her balloons. I did. She and I really enjoyed ourselves and I asked her to give away some of the balloons since I made quite a few. I had a lady ask me for my business card because she loved my balloon art. My jaw dropped. I have been hooked since!
- What types of customers have you worked with?My most common type of job is toddler's birthday parties. First birthdays are very important to families and for many, the event is more of a family and friend reunion than a traditional birthday party. For this reason, the age ranges of the cousins and friends is usually pretty big and balloon twisting and face painting typically is an activity that anyone can enjoy....even the adults! I am often asked to create balloon decorations like an arch over the cake table or centerpieces or my "Fairy Garden" or "Under the Sea" decor. This allows for some amazing pictures that people do not soon forget! The second most common type of job I get calls for is large family-oriented events like festivals, fairs, walk-a-thon's, and carnivals. Balloon twisting is a very popular art and children and parents form lines quickly as soon as they see the first several balloon hats go out into the crowd. So I prepare for that by finding a shaded area with lots of space for moms and dads with strollers, and I set my bag on a chair so I am comfortable enough to work for long stretches of time.
