Stephen M. says, "The two technicians never came to my place because they solved my issue via a phone call while they were driving to a job in their work van. They called me back via Facetime and watched me disconnect my thermostat and put the wires together to make sure there was a clicking sound coming from the heater unit on the wall. Then they told me to go to the unit itself and to look at the on and off knob at the bottom of the unit. I, the novice that I am, figured out how to ignite the pilot light, but I had twisted the on and off knob the wrong direction. A simple twist of the nob and the heater turned on! Voila! Problem solved. They patiently walked me through it and didn't charge me for their time. They simply asked that I give them a good review. Which I am now doing with no hesitation. I strongly suggest calling 2 Elements Heating & Air Conditioning for your next job -- and making sure to pay them for their services. Fortunately for me, it was a simple fix. But the fact they were kind enough to help me, even though they weren't getting paid (and they really didn't have to), shows the kind of stand up gents they are. So, I hope others recognize that the kind of folks you want to hire are the ones who are kind enough to help someone, pro-bono, every once and awhile because they're just good dudes."See more

Karina K. says, "The technician was polite and knowledgeable and the problem was diagnosed and fixed in a very short period of time. Many thanks to Mario for fixing a problem that no one else could. Something went wrong with the wiring and panel. So I called several specialists and they all recommended replacing the unit, it was irreparable. So thanks to Mario, the only knowledgeable person who solved our problem at a very affordable price. He saved our lives from the summer heat. And after we had a problem with our heater, Mario went out of his way to fix the heater for free. Mario also fixed my mom’s A/C and heater. He is the best. I am so grateful that I finally found the best A/C company so in the future I will know that if I have an A/C problem I will have my 911 in that case."See more

Cristina D. says, "After finding ServiceLion through Thumbtack, I was impressed right from the start. The booking process was incredibly easy, and their office communicated so well, making everything smooth and straightforward. This positive beginning set the tone for what turned out to be two exceptional service appointments that far exceeded my expectations. My first appointment was for a same-day service for a light switch repair (and he even managed to squeeze in the labeling of my home’s electrical panel when I expressed that I had wanted to get it done). Jacob was the technician who came out, and he was very friendly and professional. Even though it was a call later in the day, he made it seem like he was happy to be there and share his knowledge. He went above and beyond to ensure everything was done perfectly. The second service involved maintenance of our HVAC system, and Tim was the one who showed up to check it out. He discovered a significant safety concern due to the age of the unit and took a video so I could see exactly what he was talking about. He took his time to answer all my questions, thoroughly explaining the situation without trying to hard sell me on anything or apply any pressure. After asking a ton of questions and doing a little bit of diligence, I felt very comfortable contracting with them for a system replacement. Based on these experiences, I highly recommend ServiceLion. From the ease of booking and the excellent communication from their office to the outstanding service provided by Jacob and Tim, ServiceLion demonstrates a commitment to consistently top-notch service and customer care"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

To find out how much your new heating system will cost, contact heating and air companies near you and ask for free cost estimates.

What do you do if your heat isn't working?

Start by checking your thermostat and making sure it’s on heat mode. If the display is out, change the batteries. You should also check your circuit breaker to see if the circuit has tripped. And check to see if there are any issues with your filters or furnace.

When in doubt, contact a heating and air specialist near you to diagnose and fix the problem.

How do I know if my heater is broken?

The first way to tell whether your heater is broken is to feel the vents — if cool air is coming out, there’s a problem. However, it could be a tripped circuit, loss of power or a different problem. For example, if you hear loud or unusual noises, this could also be a sign of breakage, as most modern heaters are fairly quiet. Finally, look at your power bills. If there’s an unusual spike in prices, your heater could be working improperly and running inefficiently.

Reach out to a heating and air specialist near you to repair your heating system.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

When should you replace a heating system?

The better care you take of your heating system, the longer it will last. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors estimates the following lifespans for heating systems:

  • Heat exchanger: 10-15 years
  • Heat pump: 10-15 years
  • Furnace: 15-25 years
  • Electric radiant heater: 40 years

If your heating system is broken, hire a contractor or a repair service to take a look at it. They can help you determine if it makes financial sense to replace your system or spend money on repairs. The good news is that replacing your old furnace will give you the opportunity to take advantage of newer, more efficient furnaces that can save you money on heating bills from the first cycle.

How does a hot water baseboard heating system work?

In a hot water baseboard heating system, a boiler heats water and then the water passes through the system’s pipes and into the baseboard radiators in your home. Baseboard heating systems are generally quiet, and you’ll experience less heat loss when compared to a forced-air system. However, you can’t use radiant basement heating for cooling purposes.

How does a central heating system work in a house?

A central heating system consists of a boiler, heat pump or furnace. The furnace contains several parts, including burners that deliver and burn fuel, a blower, heat exchangers, a blower and a flue. The furnace will push air through the heat exchanger. Then, it will pump the warmed air through your air ducts to distribute heat throughout your home.

In the summertime, a central heating system can also provide air conditioning to cool and dehumidify your home.

What is a dual fuel heating system?

Dual fuel systems combine two types of heat fuels — typically gas and electric, the latter in the form of a heat pump — to boost heating performance and efficiency. These systems work with your furnace to deliver both hot and cold air.  A major advantage lies in the power of a heat pump, which provides cool air in the summer and heat in the winter.
