Barry removed lineoleum, repaired some wood damaged by water and replaced the lineoleum with tile in a bathroom. The job was done timely and it looks great.

My experience with Dream Builders is somewhat mixed. I was very happy with how Sam jumped in and help me decide on using tile instead of a three piece plastic surround. He and his helper got right on the job of removing the old tile and damp and moldy sheetrock and insulation. The tub installation and plumbing went well. However, in terms of the new tile installation, I was a little disappointed in the rate of progress. Sam left the tile work to his helper and often was not on the job site to oversee critical portions of the tile work. I suspect this is what resulted in a less than perfect job in terms of matching tile spaces. Also, according to Sam, his truck was in the shop, along with various tools and parts. This meant some extra running around and loss of time to get needed items. In spite of these issues, I would recommend checking out Dream Builders , but I would be a little careful if your project includes tile work.

Todd did a couple of little projects such as installing new fixtures in the bathroom shower, under the bathroom sink fixtures, and water line into the refrigerator. This allowed me to evaluate his work for future bigger projects. Todd was timely, professional, and did a great job. I was very happy with his work.

In twenty years of home ownership, this might just be my first *purely* positive experience with a major remodel. I can recommend Ruben and his team without reservation. Ruben took my yard from dirt with a few clumps of remaining weeds, to a lovely, useable space -- with a gorgeous paver patio; a lawn for dogs and kids to play in; a small area of artificial grass for the "dog bathroom;" an area ready for raised garden beds; a green screen of wax myrtle; and along two sides of the yard, a beautiful bed of hardy, colorful, low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants. He installed a couple of sprinklers in the lawn and a nice drip system in the planted area. Throughout the process, Ruben had ideas of his own but was very willing to listen -- and best of all, he used what he heard to inform his own thinking, so the ideas he offered were increasingly tailored to what he'd learned of my taste and needs. Ruben's prices are not cheap, but they are fair and clear, with no surprises. And as a bonus, he's just the nicest guy you'll ever meet, as are the men who work for him. One of them is a good carpenter, and fixed a gate that wasn't swinging properly just because he could and he knew I'd like it. I really cannot recommend this company highly enough. They offer a rare combination of integrity, expertise, and just plain niceness.

i had a small 20 square foot bathroom to tile. I wanted large format (12x24 tile) which resulted in the job needing many cuts. Chris took on the job and was very professional, punctual, and thorough- values that are hard to come by these days with most people out there. You can trust that Chris will be there when he says he will and that he will get the job done to your satisfaction. My tiles look great and i would highly recommend Chris. I will definitely hire him again should i need any more work in the future.

I hired Bay Wide Hauling to clear out a retail space, which included removing an old linoleum tile floor, a half wall, and a large awning, as well as hauling away old carpet and debris. They showed up on time, did a great job, as well as they were friendly and polite. I believe the cost for the scope of work performed was very fair. Without a doubt, I will hire them again!

If there were a sixth star, I would award it to Osbaldo. This is a bit of a late review as the project was completed prior to Thanksgiving 2014. We had carpeting, tile, and baseboard removed. New tile was laid in the kitchen and half bath. Hardwood flooring and 5 1/4" baseboard were installed in the family room. Moreover, a custom hearth, mantel, and stone facade were added to the fireplace. The result was excellent and we are still pleased with the craftsmanship. We will be hiring Osbaldo again for additional projects.

Mark recently finished a complete flooring overhaul of my house. The project included removing my existing flooring, new porcelain tile installation throughout, and wood flooring in 2 rooms. He did a great job of installation and communicating what to expect. He showed up and worked hard every day and takes pride in the quality of his work. Just hitting 2 out of 3 of these points is rare to find among contractors these days. He did everything he said he would do, and I found his pricing to be very fair. I am recommending him to friends that have smaller but similar projects, and plan to use his services again for other projects that I have planned. For those who read this while seeking a tile contractor I strongly recommend working Mark into the shortlist of those you choose to interview.

Jeff redid the tile in my master bedroom, installed a new tub and fixtures and put tile on the face of the tub. The only thing I wish was different is the width of the "decorative" tile strip. I would have wanted it wider and would have told Jeff if he had asked. Overall, I am extremely happy with the work.

Keith is an excellent handyman who can do just about everything you need up to and including project management. He takes great pride in his work, is always on time, and he is trustworthy. I had him do pretty much everything to get our rental ready for the market. Plumbing, tiling a bathroom, dry rot repair work, you name it he can do it! He went above and beyond and even helped me coordinate with granite installers while we were out of town. I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project and I recommend him heartily.

I contacted Chuck for my mom, she doesn't go online, and she was very pleased with the outcome. I don't know what she paid for the work, otherwise I may have clicked "value" as well. I think she said it was similar to some other quotes she had gotten. What was not similar though, and what my mom was very happy about was the responsiveness, follow through, and results that she received from Chuck and his crew. Months ago, my mom had 2 or 3 estimates given to her but for some reason or another those contractors did not follow through. Chuck was very responsive with call backs and an estimate, and began the project quickly thereafter. His crew was always prompt, continuously working, and each day's clean up at the end was perfect - they very considerate how they left the area. One thing that may be good to mention for those reading this and looking for a contractor, is that my mother and I felt comfortable and safe with them in the house at times we had to leave for work. My mother is older and I am very cautious and skeptical of people in general, but we both quickly noticed that Chuck and each of his crew that showed up were straight forward, easy going and courteous at all times, so they were easy to be around. As for the bathroom remodel, my mom loves it! Even when there was a snag for a second they helped my mom through it and got her to the new bathroom she's been wanting for years--- thanks Chuck! Angel really came through for my clients. I'm a real estate agent and I have two listings that were in need of updating their bathroom showers, tub and one countertop. Angel updated all three bathrooms and kitchen countertop in one day. He came through for my company. He will be the first person I call whenever I need tile grout updating. I'm 100% satisfied by price and his work. Angel was easy going and focused on me being satisfied by his work. Thanks again Angel!

David was also very clean and courteous while he was at our house. We have several other projects we hope to complete in the near future, and will definitely be using him again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
